The Austrians stopped the production in the middle of the 90's. Because they used VW LT Engines. And VW stopped the LT for the Daimler Sprinter/VW Crafter. As I know, the production of the Pinzgauer was continued at the UK for the british Army. At first with the Rest of the VW Engines, afterwords, with other Engines, now 4Cylinders...(sorry for my bad english! )

Takes me back to my younger days when a friend owned and drove a Haflinger No body knew what a Haflinger was back then and its top speed on the highway wasn't all that great - indeed I remember the times when at high speeds we were regularly being passed by snails - but boy did we have fun with it.

i first saw the steyr-daimler-puch pinzgauer in a four wheeler magazines from the eighties , i think it was . they do really well off road because they appear to have a lot of wheel travel . the wheels can drop into a hole and get some traction instead of just hanging in the air . there is another vehicle i saw in a four wheeler magazine that is a lot like the pinzgauer , it is called the volvo cross-country
@nygelmiller5293
@nygelmiller5293 3 жыл бұрын
To Warren Buchanan, funnily enough mentioning that Volvo did a vehicle influenced by the Pinzgauer - I was looking on the internet about a Soviet company called ZAZ.They were also influenced by the HAFLINGER! They did a copy, and of course, it ALSO looked great! But I don't think it of course had Portal works - ,(either Portal refers to the differentials or axles).This involves the diff somehow being ABOVE an axle, rather than being a bulge IN the axle, thus hampering ground clearance! Only the Steyr-Puch Haflinger and Pinzgauers had this unique arrangement- so they reign supreme, of course! They must have patented the design, because nobody else has it.

@@nygelmiller5293 there is also one russian company called "GAZ" that builds trucks . they copied the ford A and AA trucks before WW2 and the russian army used them in WW2 . i made a mistake in my comment . the test of the volvo cross-country would have been in a four wheeler magazine issue from between 1976 and 1982 i think . i became interested in in cars when i was 12 or 13 , and my father started buying me magazine subscriptions , like car and driver , road & track , and four wheeler . the volvo looks almost exactly like the pinzgauer but it doesnt have a diesel engine , it said in the test it uses the gas inline 6 that they use in their cars . a while back i googled searched " volvo cross country " but it only showed the station wagon car they built recently that they also call the cross country . if you like reading about off road trucks there is a book , my father bought me it when i young , it is called " the observers book of fighting vehicles " , published by the olyswager corporation . i'm not sure if i spelled the name correctly . it is a small book and it is not shaped like most books it is wider than it is tall , like a car owners manual . it has a lot of pages though . you may be able to find a used one on ebay . there was a czechslovakian company called "tatra " that was building trucks when WW2 broke out and i guess the germans captured the factory because they used tatra's . they built some heavy cargo trucks that had independent front suspension i think they were the only company that did . of course , they did'nt put i.f.s. on them for ride or handling , i would'nt think , they did it to improve off-road traction . in that book it shows probably every brand of truck that was used in WW2

Haflingers were sold in the U.S. at one time (probably briefly) and I chanced to see one. Didn't drive it or examine it very closely, just a walk-around. At the time, I was driving a short wheelbase Land-Rover wagon (estate car). The trick to going anywhere with a 4x4 is to pick your road very carefully. I would never have attempted anything like these vehicles are doing.

@ben walker rarely use the diff locks on the pinz on our off road course and it still goes places the land rover can't. Far better suspension to keep wheels on the ground and even when they do come off it still passes power to the other wheels regardless. Unlike the landrover. Landrovers do have their uses. @@ashh6540 pretty clear from this vid and many others on yt that pinz have quite poor flex. Independent suspension almost always has articulation limitations, look at the hummer h1 or the trucks in this vid.
