I’d agree. I’ve been playing tennis for about 30 years and I’ve seen my kids being coached by pros, and I’ve never seen anyone explain technique in simple and clear terms like Ryan does, ever. Heck, both me and my kids have benefited from Ryan’s simple but hugely effective tips, more than from anywhere else. Kudos!!!

Really helped me understand more of the physics of what’s happening with the “ball goes where the strings point,” and then racket path creates direction of spin. I was struggling with serve in part because the whole side on, swing up, swing towards side fence, etc., never made any logical sense to me, so I was never able to troubleshoot my own serve. Very helpful, thank you.

A good coach is blessed with the ability to observe and from his observations come insights and the ability to point them out. You have done just that ! I like the birthday hat example. I see it now. Just until a week ago I had no idea I was bringing the racquet back incorrectly resulting in that infamous waiter’s serve. Thankfully, because of your advice and a minor adjustment I made, I’m no longer doing it and can knock the hat off my head easily...😁. Thank you. That’s a neat little device you have to demonstrate spinning a ball.

Well someone with super critique will add if I don't. Suoinate, pronate KEEP YOUR ARM LOOSE. I'm going to have to practice both especially SUPINATE. Getting that knife edge makes sense in theory mastering it in reality... Let's just say thankfully I have the entire winter to develop any muscle memory. Being a righty getting the serve short and to the back hand in the ADD COURT is now a possibility. Probability? I'll get back right back to you, somewhere in April 🤭

Excellent list of Check Points for the serve. I would add that after you release the ball ALLOW YOUR TOSSING ARM TO CONTINUE UPWARD ALMOST TO THE VERTICAL. This will insure a reasonable height for the ball and it helps to get you into the "Power Position" where your front shoulder is higher than your back shoulder. Another outstanding tennis video. Bravo.

I just wanted to thank you man. You literally saved my tennis ass. I had a very nice serve in a past but then there was a huge break. When I decided to get back to the game something got changed in my serve technique and I started feeling a sharp shoulder pain when serving (at the exact moment I hit a ball). I made a research and realized that there are at least a few shoulder problems that might cause the pain including impingement and so on. At the same time I received a lot of suggestions what to do from my local tennis community and people have suggested a lot of things like stretch, yoga, doctor appointment, MRI and stuff like that. But I decided to try something from my opinion more realistic and reviewed my serve technique a long with this brilliant video. And all pain has gone immediately. You are great!!!

At about the eight minute mark, you addressed probably the single most important thing to help me improve and that is “don’t be too hard on yourself.” I am notoriously self critical, and it is detrimental to my learning because I have expectations that exceed my ability at this point. Great analogy about baking a cake and tasting the flower and saying it sucks. Of course it’s going to suck, it’s not done yet. I have been told how to serve by instructors and have gone out and hit hundreds of balls for hours on end and didn’t seem to get anywhere, not on any consistent level anyway. Going to give this step-by-step improvement method a chance and will definitely report back. Thank you so much for all of your great videos, they are very greatly appreciated.

Been playing tennis for years, could never figure out why my serve SUCKED so bad haha! It was the grip first and foremost and everything else you pointed out step by step. Thanks so much for your help more then you know!!

Absolutely, I've learned so much. Thank you. Well if you ever decide on the gratitude route there's a popular donation service called ""KO-FI.com"" (it's free), I've seen KZbin educational channels using for kudos, coffee tips etc. All the best for your channel

I see so many explanations where pronation is a goal. I'm not a coach but a tennis enthusiast with scientific background. Pronation in my opinion is a necessary consequence of two things: 1) you need to hit the ball with the strings; 2) you lead up to the contact with the racket edge to minimize air resistance and maximize speed. So right before contact you pronate, not because of the snapping effect (ok, it's there too) but because of the interplay of these two things. When you cleave with an axe, do you lead up to contact with the blade and then pronate for a snapping effect? Of course not, you lead with the edge and contact with the edge, because you want to cleave. Similar with the hammer. There's no pronation going on there because pronation doesn't produce any significant effect. In tennis, pronation is not a goal either. So no, the continental grip and the hammer motion don't "allow you to pronate". It's the other way round, pronation allows you to lead the racket with the edge and still strike the ball with the blade, not the edge.

James Y of course he pronates precontact

@James Y You pronate to make the strings contact the ball half solidly half rubbing. Too thin contact without pronation would result in all slice spin, hardly any forwarded energy.
