One more time: Great Class! I guess the mute "k" is in words like: Know Knew Knee Knife Knucle Knock I'm from Argentina, spanish speaker, and your lesson are helpping me a lot
@冯力-f1h
@冯力-f1h 6 ай бұрын
Hello my friend, let me try to answer your question. As I just get the answer from chatgpt, the silent "k" in the word "know" is a result of the historical development of the English language. Therefore, I think the "k" in these words may not be related to the topic of this video. Because coach Shane is talking about the cancellation of these letters when we say them or pronounce them. The "k" in these words such as "know" is muted, is owing to the language development. People in the past, they did not mute the “k” in "know".

Very vibrant videos! As a native New Yorker, I can strongly attest that the "t" cancellation almost never happens in Northeast American English. InTernet. InTernational. WinTer. HunTer. If I hear the cancellation on the street I can bet that the speaker isn't a native. Just my bit!

+David DiLillo While I might agree to a sound reduction to explain the correct pronunciation, I cannot go so far as to admit to a cancellation. It isn't always easy to find the right words. It is nice for him to throw it out there for discussion. It does get people thinking.

Coach Shane, I like your "cancellation matrix". I have listened to some English coaches on KZbin, but I have never learned about this theory of cancellation. May I know whether you created the theory of cancellation matrix by yourself or based on the general habits of speaking in America, just like "going to", "want to" become "gonna", "wanna"? That's a very useful theory, I like it very much. Hope to hear from you soon. Thanks. Best regards, Melvin

I am an ESOL teacher and I also work a lot with pronunciation. Overall, your lessons are very well done and I will be recommending them a lot in the future. However, I think you need to distinguish between sound cancellation and reduction. While in a word like 'and' there is a clear cancellation in connected speech, in the case above of 'advised' I do not see a cancellation, there is a representative sound for the /d/ sound, which, being absent, would give me the present tense and not the past. Just a note. Other than that, great job and thanks for the nice work.

CoachShane's Daily Dictation As an American, I have to disagree with "colder." To me, canceling the "d" would make it sound like "kohler" and that's not what I hear. It's closer to "coldr" or "coltr." I don't know to whom you've been listening, but they don't speak right if they take the "d" out of "colder."
@tanyalangille1278

Nobody is "speaking right" when not pronouncing the letters. With his example of "colder", just say it quick like you're frigid and you'll miss the "d".

Another question, wondering if I bothered u??? a more common used phrase of the idiom "blow sth out of proportion in spoken language". And i heard a similar phrase of this one from drama "Switched at birth" more bay drama then googled it but couldn't find out. I dont wanna jump to conclusion but i thought that phrase has a context-based meaning, doesn't it?
@bryandavid2313

One thing you didn't mention (probably by choice?) was the fact that 'ch' is actually 't-sh' and that 'j' is actually 'd-zh' (while I'm at it, the mention of 'zh' was omitted from the 's family.') Also, it would be important that the actual sounds of the first two examples aren't strictly enforced, but most effective speakers will employ a glottal stop when exhibiting a weakened 't.'
