I think that's great! I live in Tampa Bay and there's a guy here that does a lot of voice work for one of the TV stations here. Well said... I never worked on the railroad but I was a long haul trucker for 20 years so many of the hardships are similar.... In any event, I have no desire to actually "work" for the railroad.... I enjoy being on the sidelines.

I've managed to film a CN and CP locomotives on some of the NS coal trains near me those were probably the rarest locos I've seen especially since I live in WV on a branch line and also caught to UP locomotives on the line (I have them on my channel) it was definitely a rare catch, also your channel has amazing videos and they are great quality, they are up there with the likes of delay in block production and distant signal. *****

Actually the real old Delaware,Lackawanna& Western,and that goes back to the days of Camelback engines! See Thomas Taber's history of the DL&W,for further information! I don't mind slow trains , I note that coal hoppers ( especially when loaded ) are much more noisy than oil tanks , yep I agree , thank God its Friday !

At the 21 mark: you're at this location often. I am curious about the other line that curves to the left. Doubling the hill! Hated that when we doubled Sutton Hill outside of Hearne, Tx on the old Houston & Texas Central [SP].

Yeah, that was my stomping ground until the fence went up last year.. That's the bottom of a ten-mile hill and the lighting's pretty good there.. As I'm sure you've noticed.. I shoot up on the bridge now.. With all the places there are to shoot trains around here this area is one of the best but unfortunately that's changing fast.

Was just wondering how do they control the helper end under DPU ( I think I have that correct)? Is it radio control or satellite? If so, how is that possible when travelling through. 7 mile granite tunnel? Would appreciate an answer

It is radio control. Sometimes the remote goes into communication loss. It stays in its last commanded state for up to 90 minutes. If a stop is required, then the remote goes to idle, if a brake application is made while in com. loss. If the line had long dead spots, then repeater radios can be installed line side.

As someone one from Europe could you please explain what it means to outlaw a Train, does it mean that a Train loses it's designated Path and then has to wait further for a new Path. I live in Southwest England, we have nothing like your long Trains over here, I really like watching your Videos, and especially enjoy the Information you either show on Screen or as a Commentary. "Outlawing" is when a crew runs out of working time.. In America that's 12 hours.. After that, the crew has to stop for at least 24 hours off.. Thanks also for enjoying the videos..

Trains21 That’s not correct. 12 hours is the limit. This can be broken up if there’s a four hour or more rest in the middle of a 12 hour shift, ex. 1 hour on, four off, then 11 hours left to work. The rest period is 10 hours undisturbed rest. If a train outlaws and stops at 1200, but the crew doesn’t get to the off duty location until 1245, then the 45” gets added to the rest period. Crews can also outlaw if they work 6 consecutive shifts without over 24’ off between shifts. This requires 48 hours off. A crewman can work out of town on the 6th. day, then back home on the 7th. with 72 hours off. There are also weekly and monthly hours caps.

Aka: D.O.L. (Dead on the Law). Train crews can only work 12 hours before the FRA sends the carrier nasty-grams (and huge fines). Mind you I've had 17+ hr trips but those are usually waiting for a taxi and still having a long drive back to the depot. I've never once worked over 12 hours. 11h 58min is the closest I've cut it.

Other than for being chronically short of locomotives, I don't know why they send so many "underpowered" trains out to fight the hill. If the road was 3 lanes wide over the hill, sure send the boys out to fart around with a train that will stall and foul the line, you could use the other 2 lanes to run other traffic past, but that's not the case. And I don't see much in the way of distributed power in videos shot in this area (might just be luck of the draw), do they not believe in that around there? I always thought CN and CSX were the biggest jokers in North American railroading, but now I'm wondering if NS could be in the running for third place..... or am I being a little too harsh here?

No.. You're not being harsh at all.. They used to have helpers for these trains but that was back when a different generation of railroad employee was making the operational decisions.

Not really, although the AC locos were purchased for coal trains it's very common to see (specifically) EMD SD60Ms, SD60i's and SD60Es on coal and rock trains on NS.. And even Dash-9s..
