Very educational video. I see these videos were shot before the BNSF tariffs required the shippers (coal mines) to spray a surfactant on top of the coal loads to reduce coal dust as the trains travel. At West Thunder the spray apparatus is just north (railroad west) of the load out silo. I personally think the area is also very scenic and the p.m. thunderstorms can be spectacular.

Question, why is AC power “sd70macs” used so much in the basin? I noticed this on my way through about 3 years ago. There was an entire 70 locomotive string of sd70macs on a siding near Gillette WY. Is this something do to with the heat and extreme cold?

AC units are used because their traction motors perform better for longer periods while under load... AC traction motors stay much cooler than DC motors which makes them last longer

It amazes me how they can pull these drags with only 3 locomotives but you will se an intermodal train of equivalent length which is considerably lighter with 4 or more locomotives
@ericterbeek43099 ай бұрын
That's because the intermodal trains run higher speeds and need the additional horse power to overcome wind drag as well as the tonnage they pull. Bulk trains just need enough power to slog over the line.
@Trashman7029 ай бұрын
@@ericterbeek4309 That makes sense. More wing drag at high speed. Thanks
@Tirpitz_445 ай бұрын
Z trains always have lots of power especially for the ups
@user-wm3hu7lo1gАй бұрын
@@ericterbeek4309 Its not wind drag. Diesel engines work in a way that pull is reduced as speed goes up. There's four, five or even more engines heading z trains simply because three engines could not achieve high speeds. Even though coal trains can weigh much more than stack trains they can do with fewer engines, simply by accepting moderate speed. (Assuming no heavy grades)

Wasn't there inconsistency as to whether the rotary coupler end was forward or trailing in the consist? If the engine is always decoupled at the delivery site it wouldn't matter. Are there delivery sites where the engines are not decoupled? Do some bottom dump cars also have rotary couplers? One such consist had the painted end (usually a bright green panel) distributed forward and trailing throughout the consist. I worked at the WA Parrish Power Plant in the 80s. That plant was once out in the sticks but now has new subdivisions within a few miles. I cannot recall if the engines were decoupled or not. I was hoping to see that the Utility Fuels cars were still in use but a dim recollection is that the WAP plant got the coal from a mine in Montana, not Wyoming. I have seen a consist of those cars in the last decade or so here in Texas. UTFX is the acronym?

Tons of these trains roll through Oregon and Washington on their way to Asia. China burns a ridiculous amount of coal, and they're building new coal plants faster than the US is shutting them down. The global coal business is still very strong. Forgetting about climate for a moment, coal pollution kills over a million people per year globally via respiratory and chronic disease.

The coal deaths from respiratory disease amount to about 1 Chernobyl per week. It's also where most of the mercury in fish came from. It's a bad scene. But the trains are cool, and it really is better than not having any power because it's cloudy.
