This brings back memories. My wife and I traveled this canyon every week for a summer as we managed a campground near the summit. Railways always have the best views of the landscape.

As 1968 graduate of Utah State University, I used to travel and down the canyons of N. Utah in my $75 Plymouth. You and your Mavic 3 pro allowed me to relive those days. I am also an ex-Milw Road employee. I really appreciate your narration; not too much, not too little. Mostly you just let the trains and the canyons tell their story. They are quite good at that. I can tell you really enjoy doing this. Just keep it up. Bill S.

Holy Cow, Dan!!! You out did yourself again with this video! The trains that you caught running up and down Soldier Summit were magnificent. Your catching of multiple trains coming down the loops in the same view was something that you could not have planned but it did happen, and you were at the right place at the right time to catch them and bring them to us. The chase of eastbound Amtrak California Zephyr in daylight was a great catch. Luckily, the train was four hours late which made this chase possible. Thank you for spending this time on Union Pacific's Soldier Summit line to bring us this video. I appreciate the fact that you capture these magnificent train videos and upload them for us to see. I am sure that there are other of your subscribers who appreciate your efforts to bring us these videos of places that we will never be able to personally see and experience the way that you experience these trains and locations. The Fall scenery was magnificent/ I am glad that you went to the Soldier Summit line when you did to bring us the Fall colors with the trains.

Thank you Thomas I knew you would enjoy after how much you mentioned you liked the video before this one! I am so satisfied with the multiple trains I caught in the different locations! Yeah that daylight Zephyr chase was a massive bonus as well! When I planned this trip I had not even considered what the Autumn colors would be like so I was blown away when I got there! They are accurate to what you see as well. I did not enhance the colors in any way. I've still got more great Utah stuff coming up that I think you'll really enjoy.

I was already retired before I got to make my first and second trips out west. You cannot appreciate the beauty or vastness until you see it with your own eyes. Utah was not a state I visited but if I get the chance to go west again that is an area I'd sure like to see. I'm not a true railfan but I do like to watch the trains occasionally and with this gorgeous backdrop it makes for a stunning video. Your drone footage is excellent in my opinion and the background music fits in perfectly. Your narration is also just right. Fall was the perfect time to do this. The colors of fall foliage and mountains blend beautifully together. Thank you for sharing and give us a wave sometime.

Agree with the sentiment - "beauty and vastness". I have traveled through deserts here in Australia, in North America (love the Mojave and Death Valley), across Central Asia and Western China, West Asia (Iran, Saudi Arabia, Jordan). Each desert has its own beauty and character. No two are the same (even if they are sand deserts). With the Mojave - crossed by some awesome rail lines with fantastic photo opportunities and Dan is a master artist.

@@TheRailfanDan Dan - My pleasure. My train chasing and photographing in the US has been more or less restricted to the South West: between Barstow and Needles, Tehachapi, Cajon Pass, Donner Pass. I like desert environments (ok Donner ......). Didn't get up to the North-west except for a trip up on the Starlight and then straight across the border into Canada. Spent about eight weeks in the US spread over two visits (not all train chasing). Have viewed the efforts of quite a few different US (and Australian) train video producers and have come to several conclusions - there are some bloody awful ones (some guys should never be let near a video camera), some that are so-so, others sort of OK, through to good and very good. Then there is Railfan Dan - amazing trains, amazing locations and amazing artistry. I think you have taken the art form to a whole new level. The few shekels are a small price for the real enjoyment that you have given me (and others), and the memories that have been recalled. Charlie

Hey, wow, I’m sitting here mesmerized by another gorgeous video when what to my wondering eyes should appear? At 54:57 a stretch of track and surrounding scenery that looks very familiar because one afternoon in my two years on the road I was headed east on Hwy 6 and had just gone through that cut and I pulled into a little parking area up there to do my own (crappy) little train video. It was before I ever had a drone so it was just hand-held iPhone, but I got the whole thing including front, mid, and rear power. The parking area looks down on the crossing and I had just stopped to pee when I saw a westbound train coming so I quickly grabbed the phone and did the best I could, lol. You saw it on Facebook and complemented me, which I thought was very kind coming from a pro chaser like yourself. 😊 Anyway, I love this video, especially the “race”, the extreme colors throughout, the gorgeous, late afternoon golden hour light, and of course, the Castle Gate footage. And omg, the Zephyr at night and the next day was a real treat as I have ridden that train in both directions so many times. LOVE seeing it come out of the Kyune tunnel.

Hey thanks Rick for the story and reminder on that! This was seriously the top place I had wanted to visit and film trains for some years so this video specifically is one of my biggest personal wins of all time (Including that race which I really was MAJORLY foaming at the mouth about!!!). I am thinking the video of yours I commented on I was super excited to see something from this line at the time since I hadn't made it there yet! As I watch, the 'oddities' are adding up to me. 1. The set of coal cars parked at the summit. 2. 2 BNSF eastbounds in one day. 3. The set of UP light power going to pick up the coal empties. 4. The condition of the near track (that the UP power was on) at Gilluly. The ballast looks like it is SOAKED with liquid mud; probably the result of recent flooding. 5. Other spots of muddy conditions trackside, and muddy water in the Price River. It looks to me like there was a significant storm/maintenance closure in the days before you got there.

@TheRailfanDan11 ай бұрын
Thank you so much! I still have the Inspire 2 but with the variety in the shots on can achieve with the 3 cameras on the Mavic 3 it's hard to want to fly anything else! The main camera of the Mavic 3 is actually a bit better than my Inspire 2's X5S camera in my opinion.

Wow how did you keep up given the landing/setup/takeoff time of the drone? Great flying as usual. Thanks for the look at the Gilluly Loops, I live not too far away and need to go explore the area with my drone.
@TheRailfanDan11 ай бұрын
I always do a lot of planning out ahead of vising anywhere I go. Places to park and where I can position myself to be able to fly to specific locations. That in itself is a big part of it for me ahead of time and I did plenty of that here too. You definitely should get out and explore with your drone!

Very nicer video, well done! Great location and excellent drone flying and camera work! So I guess you have taken the Part 107? I guess if you are going to fly a over two thousand dollar drone, I guess the $150. for the Part 107 is not a issue. How long did you study for the test and how long did it take and did you think it was difficult or easy? Again, very well done video! As a drone operator myself, are you flying within line of sight. I stay under the 250 grams myself.
@TheRailfanDan8 ай бұрын
I admit I still need to get my 107. It will require a lot of studying time for me personally which is hard to make time for but I am committing to getting it this year. I have started studying several different times but have had trouble sticking with it since it does take hours and hours.

Excellent production! I would like to add that a little more locomotives growl and just a bit less overpowering soundtrack would be nice. Excellent footage!
@TheRailfanDan6 ай бұрын
Thanks Rick I too wish it were easy to add! Drones do not record audio though. The only way to add it is to capture sound from a microphone from the ground and then edit it to match the drone video which a lot of the time isn't easy to do and make it sound like what you're actually watching. Sometimes it can work out but with a moving camera in the air and a stationary microphone it can be difficult to match.

The train was on the left hand tracks. As the train was coming around the curve you commented that is thew last time we would see it and it's on the right hand tracks. Just asking I rally like watching your videos I replayed that part a couple of times.

Thank you Richard sorry not quite sure which part you are talking about though!

Im from the Spanish Fork area. What radio channels are you catching the trains on? Ive looked and looked and dont think im given the right ones? I want to start drone videoing like you do in that canyon. My youngest is obsessed with trains. He brings out the little boy in me 🥰😁
@TheRailfanDan11 ай бұрын
The radio frequency is 160.455 and a quick Google search shows that it translates to AAR channel 23 if that's what you need. Awesome I bet he would love watching you do that!

1 more question. How do you know the elevations?
@courtneybchild11 ай бұрын
Track elevations?
@TheRailfanDan11 ай бұрын
I use Google Earth. Anywhere you put the cursor on the PC version of Google Earth it will tell you the elevation.

UPSP was this always UP or was this SP track or SSW track?
@O-PAC11 ай бұрын
It was Rio Grande (DRGW) until 1988, then SP after Rio Grande bought the SP and chose to use the SP name. In 1996 it became UP after UP bought the SP.

The first EB BNSF train was likely empty crude oil tanks headed back for loading near Wellington, Utah. The hoppers in the train were likely coke from the refineries in Salt Lake City headed east to Denver, then possibly south to Mexico. A lot of coke is exported to Mexico these days. By the way, while the proper Spanish pronunciation of "Castilla" is "cah-stee-ya", the railroaders pronounce it "Cus-still-uh".

Once again you have created an amazing video. Your style and the way you integrate music and your voice overs makes it so much fun to watch. You are definitely THE MAN when it comes to train videos.
@TheRailfanDan11 ай бұрын
I wondered about the specifics of that first BNSF train and figured it was something along those lines but didn't actually know so didn't say anything about it. The Castilla pronouncement is something else I was unsure of so decided to just play it safe ha!

Thanks Gordon! I'm very happy you're satisfied with how the voice over is. For years I thought that was something I would never do but everyone seems to be really enjoying it that way.

You're telling me! I wish that were possible! Even to have that capability in the 80s would have been amazing. So many things from even that time that are gone now.

1) a thumb up is way too little to show how I liked this show! 2) you being very good in handling the DJI Mavic, I now starting to feel, the ground shots become a bit boring... 3) so much more to see than the train itself from above. The gone away shot at 11:12 is excellent. Keep those "a view from a landscape with a train somewhere in it" - shots coming! 4) I thought "How would a night shot from above look like?" And you did just that at 1:06:27 An Amtrak train is just the right train having a lot off lights along it's length. More than enough to keep the subscribtion to your channel going. Thank you!
@TheRailfanDan11 ай бұрын
Thank you so much I'm humbled you think that highly of it! I am quite proud of this one. I enjoy adding the ground shots for the audio since we don't get any of that from the drone. The biggest setback using a drone in my opinion. You're right though definitely not as exciting.

The juxtaposition of the moving coal trains and the non-turning wind turbines says a lot about where we're being taken by many governments and "experts". A fantastic video, just wish I could stand in those hills and see it for real! Thanks, Dan, from the UK.

beautiful video. I'd suggest more train sounds and less music. A mixture would be fine. Thanks. I've been here several times with my Dad railfanning

Drones unfortunately do not record audio. I too wish I could add more train sounds but it takes a lot of work to add train sounds to the drone footage and make it sound accurate to what you're seeing. Once in a while I do it but it adds a whole other layer to editing and much of the time I don't feel I have enough good audio to use to make it sound accurate.
@railscenes49599 ай бұрын
Agree, if the drone recorded sound we would hear just the chopping copter blades. Correct?
