The lessons in this house are OUT OF THIS WORLD. Enough with the Star Wars references, some very intelligent design decisions as always explained so simply. Especially in regards to structure. Something I think alot of us don't think about as much as we should.

So much thought and care has gone into designing this dwelling, and it really shows. Not enough architects think or care about what the underside of a veranda looks like. Absolutely love the journey up the overgrown stairs and the blurring of the inside/outside boundary

Wonderful entrance sequence... it's an underappreciated art. Also I've exactly that kind of nipple and crotch covering blinds in my bedroom for 20 years. The ability to adjust the windows so much really taught me a lot over the years. At the moment they are lowered in such a way they block the view of the neighboring house when sitting on my desk, but still allow a sliver of the mountains in the distance. And they block nipples and crotch perfectly when standing right next to the window XD

Seriously impressive detail. Maximisation of views and the play to achieve that while keeping a language. Using the bricks too to create bits of colours; like the kitchen pops of colour.

I’m guessing there is a strong reason the lift is where it is, but I hate that you have to traverse it to get to the cabinets for cooking. It’s right in the middle of the kitchen space. Love everything else about the building and AMA too!

Enjoyed the way you laid out the Empire Strikes Back - such fun...although, as you were reminiscing on the dolphins, I got a flash of the opening scene from the movie Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. hahahah So long and thank you for all the fish! I took my daughter to see it on the big screen...after the movie had ended and we were heading out she said to me: "Mommy I want that gun." I continue to enjoy the way you both share your knowledge, insights, creativity, wisdom, and all the things. Many thanks.

Not sure which was my favourite, the journey to the front door, the deck, or the little detail of the shelves in the bathroom

I’m so torn when it comes to architecture in our country. I love the skill and thoughtfulness of the architects but also find the wealth needed to make it happen pretty gross.

Amazing building and design rationale. And attention to detail is outstanding as always. I have only one question: how will a gardener be able to maintain the plants at the external steps? Now the garden looks absolutely stunning, but what happens when it starts taking over the staircase? 😅

i was wandering how does it feel to step barefoot on the fiberglass decking? is it comfortable? i'm thinking of using it in one of my projects but haven't had the chance yet to have a sample of it so i can test it myself

The concept is intelligent and very clear, with some beautiful aspects, but some of the details could be problematic. The white bars around the upper deck feel like a cage (or looking out from an old hospital or mental institution - but without the historic charm). The bars coming down from the roof and up from the floor frame the view, but it also feels oppressive, when what you really want at the coast is a view open to the sky as much as possible (but preferably beneath a veranda of some kind). Even the railing at the side to block out the residences encroaches on your feeling of space - and at the coast you want to maximise the feeling of space and freedom. Second, I agree that you don’t want to just maximise the view on all sides everywhere, but you need to see through the balcony so you can sit inside and have a full view of the ocean through that deck balustrade without blocking the view, and that dense railing impairs the view badly. You don’t necessarily need a glass balustrade, but something far more see-through than what you’ve got (like a horizontal metal railing with two horizontal wires underneath). Also, sure you don’t need to maximise the view, but although having it framed like a painting (or through binoculars) is a very artistic solution, how is that particular framing going to make the space feel to live in? You want the view to be accented and appreciated, not over-exposed, but you also want the view to be immersive and not just a landscape painting (so maybe an extra window around the corner next to the deck that opens up the view further to the right?). In any case, the living experience is more important than anything else, not even what is artistically or architecturally preferred. So if the clients enjoy living with a tasteless maximised view everywhere, put it in (or find out early so you can send them to another architect).. Btw: this is an “ageing in place”, but is the only way up to the bedroom from the lift involving a small flight of stairs?? Uh, ok…

I admire the work and lessons showcased for both students and clients to appreciate considered design. However as a country, our houses are now some of the largest in the world and a lot of the new builds are cookie cutter Mc mansions. If we are to improve the standards by which most people build we need to find a way to make architecture more accessible to the “average” homeowner. Is it also possible that future showcases be work done by studios other than AMA?
