If I could like this multiple times I would. Your advice has been amazing. I may be a rec diver but the simplicity and safety of your setup is undeniable! I remember vaguely that you had a video about how to streamline your BP&Wing...that involved cutting the OP valve pull tab off and tying into a knot...I can't find the video! I may be blind but I will keep looking, if you know which one...super helpful if you pointed me in the right direction.Thank you!

As a newcomer to tec diving, these videos are absolutely fantastic. Did first couple of dives in borrowed non-DIR style set-up with releases, d rings, flapping bits of strapping etc. Really hard to find everything so can really see the benefit in your approach. Can't wait to get my own kit with minimalist set-up as demonstrated here. Thanks, and please keep these highly informative videos coming.

Im a PADI Master Diver and have always had the floating armchair BCD's since my first dive. Started with a Scubapro Classic (beachball) and my last was a Zeagle Ranger (not bad actually, but really big) My house got hit by lightning and caught fire and I lost everything inside except my dog (the only thing that mattered really). I'm now looking to get new equipment and the BP/W interested me, so doing research. Was concerned a single strap set up would be hard to don and duff, so very glad to see you demonstrate it, and how simple it appears. I like the fact that in the simplicity of the BP/W design lies the inherent safety. Not much can go wrong. I also like the fact that a strap going bad is easy to replace yourself and not have to send a 30 pound box to a service center somewhere for repair. Your video helped cinch my decision that this is the route to go. Thank you.

SUPER channel.Great practical approach to all problems. Am new to wings & am trying to figure out how much weight to use. I am abt 150 lbs , use 7mm wetsuit & full rash guard, steel 80 cf tank & use a SS wing with an STA. Complete BCD weighs 15 lbs without any wts. With a jacket style BCD I used 18 lbs BCD + weights =25 lbs.. So figure I would need 8-10 lbs wts in the wing trim pockets? Or would that make me overweighted? I don't want to use a wt belt. Any guidance would be appreciated

I am wanting to try a backplate system. Without a chest strap, does the harness try and slide off your shoulders? Thank you!
@IJ_uk
@IJ_uk 7 жыл бұрын
At the bottom of the backplate (see 1:10) where it threads through the slot (waist belt area) I have a tri-glide, which stops the webbing from moving. This prevents the shoulder section of the webbing from moving and possibly. I don't have an issue with it, but was wondering on your thoughts. Should the waist webbing and shoulder webbing be purely one, or is the tri-glide not recommended

I am anxious to try this type of setup, but I am concerned about the straps falling off my shoulders. When I wear a backpack when hiking or hunting, I have to always use a chest strap or the shoulder straps tent to fall off? Any advice?? Maybe put on a chest strap on the harness, but this would seem to defeat the purpose of the setup.

For the same reason why you have a buckle on the right side of her I have left :) I have knives on the right side. Stage does not obstruct access to them. You have a nice channel. Hi Achim, is there a rule of thumb for how much of a Y join you form between the waist belt and crotch strap. I feel like I have mine set up very similar to yours when using a single cylinder, but now switching to doubles, with the extra weight that brings, it creates more of a pronounced twist where the waist belt leaves the backplate. These twists concern me as the items mounted relatively close to the backplate - left D ring and cannister mounting on the right - are pushing into my drysuit at angle. They have smooth edges but I still worry over time they will weaken the drysuit and worst case cause a tear. To get the attachment points sitting flush with the suit the waist belt would sit a lot higher and as long as the crotch strap is adjusted to still have a close fit its not overly clear why this is never a recommended option for setup. I se at 8:09 your can light buckle is doing something similar - twisting into your body so the top corner of it would effectively be piercing your suit. Curious for your thoughts.

I would love to try a back plate and wing! But I’m confused about what to do about ditch able weights. For diving and warmer water, with an aluminum back plate, do you put weight on your belt on the harness?

I really like your channel and as many of us would like to ask you a question about weights. I am in the process of changing from a rec dive jacket to a technical dive wing .I usually dive with a single steel 12 l tank a dry suit and carry about 9kg of lead. Will I still have to carry as much lead? If so where do you recommend me to store it? Thanks 😉
@CoastalDevelopment
@CoastalDevelopment 7 жыл бұрын
Hi, Iguess I will make a clip about the weight topic as so many people ask. if diving single I have so called trim weight pockets on the tankstraps - as close to the backplate as possible. They take up to 2 lg each - so 8 in total. if I would have to take more a P-Weight could always be an option. generally I would try to get more balance on the rig - meaning when you dive a big drysuit and heavy undergarment I would try to pick a heavier tank (looking at its volume weight ratio!) I try to balance my rig in a way that I do not need more the 4 kg max - which makes your life easier. Chech what you really need at some point - 90% of all divers a overweighted as they are stressed by a fear of going up, lack of drysuit training, lack of skills handling their BCD; etc (general thoughts - not talking about you Ifan)

Hi. What do you think about harness webbing material. Some webbings are hard ,some webbings are softer easy to flex. Is there any safety or comfort concern betwen them. Your webbing looks like hard to flex.

Really enjoy watching your videos Achim! Im waiting to get myself a HOG deluxe backplate harness system. Any thoughts on it? Also, i wanted to ask if there is a difference if i were to choose between the 1.5 and 2 inch crotch strap? Thank you!
@CoastalDevelopment
@CoastalDevelopment 6 жыл бұрын
HI Morgan. The backplates are all more or less fine. Minimal differences - so the HOG will be fine. Critchstraps should be as wide as the normal harness. if very slim they may be a pain especially when scootering. The material schould be soft - not hard.

Awesome video as always. We do most of our diving from Ribs so must remove the gear in the water. Slipping it off the shoulder can be difficult without the tanks sitting on a bench or whatever, especially in rougher than perfect conditions. There is the over the head method which I have never tried but any other solutions?
@CoastalDevelopment

Hi Neil, I never do "over the head" in water - always slip it off the shoulder - hard to explain in written form -give me some more days to get better and I will make a clip about it - actually a lot of viewers asked.

Thanks. lets forget about brands. I do not like them, as in the forst place the avarage diver does not need them if the harness is set up correct. second the add bulk and trouble points. There is a video coming "failure points" where we talk about this as well. take care.

Do you have the same adjustment when on drysuit or wetsuit? Or in case of a drysuit and thick undergarment you readjust the length of the webbing? Thank you!
@CoastalDevelopment
@CoastalDevelopment 7 жыл бұрын
Hi. Actually I do not change anything on the harness when I switch from wet to dry. Usually this is overrated. Of course there is a limit. if you dive lets say a 3mm wetsuit and a really tight harness and switch to a drysuit and really thick underwear you may want to loosen it a bit. Usually there is enough room for a bit of change :)

Hi, do you find that having the shoulder D ring means stage cylinders can get in the way a bit? Also can I ask what the bungie on your left shoulder D ring is for?
@CoastalDevelopment
@CoastalDevelopment 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Mark, the shoulder D-Ring and the stage have to be configured corrct so ghey do not create issues (D-Ding in right position, not tto low an too high - Boltsnap on shoulder of stage and 1" size, etc) The bungee holds the inflator in place. Best Achim

So if you have some shoulder/back problems or similar, and do tech dives (read big heavy gear) you should not be using a weight belt? Finding that kinda stupid... I could not keep diving d12 steel tanks, doing lots of long walks on the shore to the dive spots like i do if i where to follow that rule, that's for shure.
@CoastalDevelopment
@CoastalDevelopment 7 жыл бұрын
Adventure man I can not really follow you here. If you cant carry a D12 on your back - then the 2 or 3 Kg you usually need to add (if at all) will not make the difference. The weightbelt has to go to the wter as well and in the water it will make big differecne if you have your weight evenly distributed on your back or on your hips where it is out of the center influencing your trim. So if I understad your message right - ignoring the "stupid" you tell me that you can infact carry a D12 but only if you doive a weight belt? Sorry if I dont get it but what you write makes no sense to me.
