Reminds me of when I went up to the top of the World Trade Center (late 90’s) with my Yeasu VX1R and talked to my friend back in Sayreville NJ on 6.52 using only half a watt!

Baofengs have no bandpass filters, thus they are getting overloaded with powerful signals in the city. The closest (by price) to that Baofeng is Quansheng UV-R50. It has filters and works way better. Yesterday I visited Alexandra Palace viewpoint in London and "triggered the security" by making QSOs there :) And yes, I also had to hold the handheld horizontally to reduce noise. Have no idea why.

Great "activation". I wished I had been on 146.52 FM to make the QSO. I once had a QSO with a ham on the 77th floor of the Empire State.

Thanks for the video. Question: Why are you holding the HT sideways? The antenna should be vertical (up and down), not sideways. You lost signal both in transmitting and receiving.
@COASTALWAVESWIRES2 жыл бұрын
Actually not, I couldn’t make contacts with it vertical, if you go back and watch you’ll see the signal get stronger when I tilted the radio to a near horizontal position. I think my take off angle was too high in the vertical position, who knows but it didn’t work when I held it vertical. I mentioned that near the end of the video.
@FlugPoP2 жыл бұрын
@@COASTALWAVESWIRES It could be because of a high noise floor, tilting it horizontal like you did would help reduce that. I have done this before in high RF environments.
@COASTALWAVESWIRES2 жыл бұрын
That might be it, thanks for input!

How far do you think your signal traveled? I am not familiar with the distance in New York. You certainly make interesting videos!

Thank you! It was probably 10 to 15 miles, I’m not sure what part of the Bronx he was located in. Maybe Mike will see this and comment.

After using a Drake TR-22 from the 103rd floor of the World Trade Center back in the early 70's, my husband and I brought a Yaesu FT-60R up to the 86th floor Observation Deck of the Empire State Building in June 2012. I worked KC2TNT in Brooklyn full quieting on 146.52 simplex. Within 30 seconds I was surrounded by excited uniformed guards who questioned me and ordered me to stop. 9/11 paranoia appeared to still be rampant back then. I am surprised that the high level of RF up there didn't overload the Baofeng receiver. Did anyone challenge your operating while up there? de KP4MD
