Coaster F40PHM-2C Locomotive Farewell

Since 1995, the Coaster, also formerly referred to as the Coast Express Rail, has served commuters and leisure travelers in coastal San Diego County. From the very beginning, the service has utilized a fleet of 5 F40PHM-2C diesel-electric locomotives, numbers 2101 through 2105. These units were built in 1994 by Morrison-Knudsen, which is now part of WABTEC Corporation. As the years passed and the locomotives continued to soldier on, they approached the end of their useful service lives, which is somewhere in the neighborhood of 25 years for a diesel-electric passenger locomotive. In 2018, the North County Transit District board of directors voted to replace the F40s with 5 SC-44 “Charger” locomotives built by Siemens Mobility in Sacramento, California. The purchase of the new charger locomotives was accomplished with funding from the Carl Moyer Grant, which requires the old locomotives to be permanently withdrawn from service and disposed of. Fortunately, the Pacific Southwest Railway Museum in Campo, California was able to work out an agreement with North County Transit District and the San Diego County air quality board that would allow the locomotives to be donated intact to the museum with the provision that the on board Diesel engines and head end power generators must still be made inoperable before leaving NCTD property. The planned first day of revenue service for the new Charger locomotives was set for February 8th, 2021. The last Coaster F40PHM-2C made its final run on February 5th. Locomotive 2101 had the honors, bringing train 665 into Oceanside for the last time. To celebrate nearly 26 years of serving the residents of San Diego County, California, and as a nod to the inspiration for the channel name, I’d like to take one more look at the Coaster F40 locomotives in their last few years of operations. We will see several scenes of each locomotive in service running back and forth between San Diego and Oceanside.

worthy replacement Siemens Chargers are not worthy. The Siemens Charger looks like a cheap car imported from Europe. The streamlining cuts off at the front, and it kind of resembles a city bus that sad people ride with the deatination sign on the front.

So glad these engines won’t be scraped! I had lived in San Diego for my whole life and had so many memories on these trains, I skated to Santa Fe station and ride all the way to Oceanside to visit some friends there. Always loved the way they looked and screamed! Hopefully the people who are giving them love next will find a set of 5 or 6 old Coaster bilevels to go along with them. Not so excited for the replacements but glad these old guys will be alright.

RIP Coaster F40s. Seeing this reminded me that Caltrain’s F40’s will also be withdrawn next year pending electrification. As the MPI36PH-3C’s are more fuel-efficient and newer, they will likely be the last remaining Diesel Electrics on Caltrain for the remaining un-electrified service. It’s sad to see Coaster’s F40’s be withdrawn, may they rest in peace. Thanks for the video!

My Favorite Coaster F40PH is definitely 2101. I think it just has the best K5LA of the fleet. But 2104 is a very close second, not to mention it once had that M5, and 2105 had an M3. Still, it's really sad seeing what I consider some of the most iconic and memorable locomotives of all time being retired. It's a shame that they couldn't have been as lucky as the Tri-Rail F40s.

So sad to see them retired. I'm such a fan and model train collector. Have so many of them in Amtrak , VIA & NEW JERSEY TRANSIT. Would definitely like them in COASTER. I was able to see the few last ones before I became a railfanner. I was only 10 in 2021 and luckly found My self, face to face with Coaster F40ph 2104 as it zooms passed me. My mum luckly took a picture in time. Never got to see them after that. Now the only closest thing I have is ACEX F40phs, what only oporate on the Last Train for the Morning rush, and the Last train for the Evening Rush. Its also a double header with ACEX 3103 trailing and ACEX 3105 leading. Nice video!

PSRMA decided to restore one of the locomotives to operation. PSRMA chose 2103 to be restored to operation as an F40M-2F and it will pull excursion trains for many years to come.

When the F40s get to Campo, Here’s is what they will do with them. You said that all 5 of the F40s will not run, but Steve from the Pacific Southwest Railway Museum said that they will be able to restore 1 of the ex-COASTER F40s to operation as an F40-2 freight locomotive, while the other 4 F40s will be for display only.

The F40PH is the greatest commuter diesel locomotive of all time. With their ditchlights, marker lights, and numberboard, top and center headlights, two front windows, the full body covering the frame, and the loud roar of the engine. It is the posterboy of Amtrak, and a meme from the early 2000's. They were reliable, long-lasting and quality made by EMD. Replacing them with a soulless, ugly, european-import low quality car-looking locomotive is a crime. Farewell to the F40PH, Screamer, or the car of Chuck Norris.

I've seen how much they'll be missed from the comment section.. but one relief is that it is being replaced by another diesel electric locomotive...and we really hope that is the case in india too.. which is not.. 😅😂... every route is being electrified and they stopped building Alco and EMD locos in india..the remaining alcos and EMDs will be scraped at the end of their service period.. the only diesel locos currently in production in india is the General Electric diesels.. that too they've agreed to make only 1000 for 10 yrs from 2017. I think they'll be the last diesel locos in india..😐

My entire life I have seen this train in service and to now know I won't see it as often breaks my heart a bit. :( But they deserve a well earned break and I'm always happy to see museums try to grab these trains before they're completely extinct and we'll never be able to see one of the giant machines again.
