There used to be an Amtrak train and a Via train running between Toronto and Chicago. Both trains made the entire trip, traveling in opposite directions. I presume they changed crews at the border. I've heard some talk of re-instituting the route, but running it through Windsor and Detroit, with a stop at the refurbished MC station in Detroit. The advantage of this route is that Amtrak owns or controls the track from near Detroit to Porter, IN.

VIA GMD F40PH-2D had a 3300 gross horsepower rating (net traction hp rating depends on HEP and accessories) from an EMD 16-645E3C prime mover, were originally built from 1987 to 1989 with control desks and featured two very large digital speedometers, drew 500kW max HEP, while the Amtrak EMD F40PH had control stands, geared for 110 mph, had an EMD 16-645E3B prime mover and drew 800kW max HEP. VIA units 6400 to 6436 (class GPA-30A) are geared for 95 mph, 6437 to 6458 (class GPA-30B and GPA-30C) are geared for 90 mph. Both Amtrak and VIA F40's were leased to haul Montreal AMT commuter trains in 1999 to 2003 and it was apparent that VIA's locomotives were far stronger pullers when accelerating long trains (even when drawing HEP from the main engine) than both the Amtrak F40 units or the AMT's newer F59PHI's (which had independent HEP). Starting in 2007, VIA's F40PH-2D were rebuilt by CAD (Canadian Allied Diesel) with independent Caterpillar HEP and remanufactured 16-645E3C Tier 0 Prime movers, Dash-2 electrical equipment replaced with WABTEC microprocessor controls, and the control desks upgraded with a WABTEC screen. Today's VIA's GMD F40's are all classed as GPA-30H (3000 hp with HEP) and retain the gearing limits as above (95 mph for 6401 to 6436, 90 mph for 6437-6458), but strong acceleration performance characteristics allow them pull long 8-car trains and still keep up on corridor trains with the faster 100 mph P42's (geared for 110 mph).

Is the second locomotive providing motive power to the train, or is the engineer just sitting there while the engine provides HEP to the cars of the Montreal bound train? And if so how is that locomotive controlled MU to the lead locomotive?

All of the LRC coaches were built, and HEP2 coaches rebuilt, with full MU connections to allow engines on each end of a train.

@@CoasterFan2105 VIA's P42 and LRC coach fleet, as well as HEP-II Heritage equipment will continue to serve as a Capacity Protection fleet as passenger demand continues to surge. Montreal to Toronto and Toronto to Windsor trains are wildly popular as of August 2024 and must be served with ever longer 8-car LRC trains pulled by P42 or F40 units, sharing limited slots with freight trains. Only a few LRC cars will be forced into retirement soon, and VIA might be faced with a capacity shortage if they retire equipment too fast. If you think about it, the number people wanting to take the train is growing so fast that 32 new Venture five-car train sets won't be able to carry them all!
