I'd say maybe Nemesis (I know it's the 1 coaster all of us Brits always mention) but what that beast did for not only Alton Towers but the UK theme park scene as a whole is nothing short of amazing. And if it wasn't for Nemesis, Oblivion & Air wouldn't have been built (meaning there wouldn't be a B&M Dive or Flying coaster model). I often look at the butterfly effect with coasters, and thinking about it yet Nemesis, Phantasialand wouldn't have built Black Mamba after the designer admitted it was heavily inspired by Nemesis. Meaning Phantasialand wouldn't have grown enough to get rides down the line such as Taron. Which would inspire Velocicoaster & Taiga for example... Obviously these things might still have happened but it's also strange to think about the, What if?

Related video idea: "Coasters That Took Their Parks to the Next Level". In this case, the park was already "on the map" for coaster enthusiasts, but a new coaster was added that _really_ boosted the park's popularity. I'm thinking coasters like The Beast at Kings Island. Kings Island was already on the map due to Racer, but a few years into the park's life, The Beast was added, and that quickly became the headline coaster for the park. For nearly thirty years, The Beast was _the_ standout coaster at Kings Island, with the few challengers for the title fizzling out for one reason or another. Only when Cedar Fair took over was that crown ever seriously challenged, but it's still one of the top rides in the park, and for good reason.
@AirtimeThrills13 сағат бұрын
The beast would fit that video much better than this one. Colossus at sfmm would also qualify

@@AirtimeThrills Also, I think Ghostrider, which turned Knott's into a must-visit destination overnight for coaster enthusiasts, especially when they ran their Coaster Solace event in the early 00s (and especially since the event ran during the off-season for other parks, hence the "solace" term). Those were the "CCI years" of coaster fandom. I mean, people traveled to Michigan's Adventure *just* for Shivering Timbers. Seriously. Maybe that's another video idea -- the eras when a particular coaster manufacturer dominated the industry.

@@AirtimeThrills Other coasters I can potentially see showing up in such a video: Lagoon - Cannibal (while Wicked may have turned a few heads, Cannibal was on a whole different level) Cedar Point - Magnum XL-200 (the harbinger of the "coaster destination" era of Cedar Point) Carowinds - Intimidator/Thunder Striker (the start of Cedar Fair's big investments into the park) Canada's Wonderland - Behemoth (same story as Carowinds, but north of the border) Knott's Berry Farm - Ghostrider (the last project of the Knott family, but also a precursor to the big investments that Cedar Fair would put into the park) Alton Towers - Nemesis (the first "Secret Weapon" to see the light of day, and the coaster that set the tone for many of the coasters that would be added to the park since then)

What put these parks on the map was the coaster shows on cable TV and the internet so people could book their own vacations. For me, it started when I saw Desperado on a TV show back in 1998. I had to ride it, and that's how it all started for me. After that, the coaster wars happened between CF and SF. It was a great time for new rides.

As for my home park Six Flags Darien Lake, although Viper opened with the park in 1982 and it was a record breaker with 5 inversions, I would say that at the time Superman: Ride of Steel (Intiman's first hyper coaster) put that park on the map drawing more guests than ever before for the first several seasons.
@GbHandlebar7 сағат бұрын
The cultural significance of Corkscrew arriving at Alton Towers was beyond anything I’ve seen since for anything park/coaster related. It arrived in a pre-online world, yet there was so much press and attention given to it that pretty much everyone in GB suddenly knew of the park and its iconic ride. It was a subject that would drop into conversations in a way you’d never expect now. It even had a national TV series based around it. There’s a good reason why the corkscrews, themselves, now serve as a monument at the front of the park.

Hersheypark's sooperdooperLooper was basically the East Coast Revolution, and I think it served a similar purpose for the park--it was far from the park's first coaster but it gave it a ride that was utterly unique in the region, though their coaster purchases didn't really kick into high gear until Great Bear in 1998. A weird case is Walt Disney World's Space Mountain. It opened just a few years after the park, and had probably been conceived as the East Coast counterpart of Matterhorn Bobsleds, but it really upped the game for thrill coasters at Disney parks in general. It was the first roller coaster where I heard about people making long-distance pilgrimages to the park just to ride it.

Skyrush should be on list because it instantly made hersheypark a F tier park for airtime thrills due to the curse of skyrush. When the park got new restraints, it really put hersheypark on the map.
@zacg_7 сағат бұрын
Skyrush made the park a bucket list park for extreme thrill seekers but I don't think that's what he meant by a coaster "putting a park on the map." Hersheypark has been a major destination for decades. It would be hard to pick one individual coaster in their collection that especially drew attention because it's growth and reputation as a park have been so gradual but steadily. Comet is great but it didn't really make the park stand out. I think SooperDooperLooper is probably the closest thing you could argue because regionally speaking it served the same purpose as Revolution in California (and they are very similar rides

Couple of others worth considering. Adventureland: The Monster. I used to live in Iowa and NOBODY talked about coasters in Iowa before Monster. SFOT: Texas Giant. Sure, Runaway Mine Train is historic and influential. But Texas Giant is what made people say that you needed to travel to Texas for a coaster. Shockwave is fantastic but I don't think it ever drew the kind of attention that Texas Giant did. It really seemed like a Texas sized wooden coaster and it was arguably as famous as Colossus or even The Beast. Disneyland: Matterhorn Bobsleds. Hear me out. Obviously, the park was famous prior to Matterhorn. But if we're focusing on a ride that turned an existing park into a coaster destination then I think by that definition it would qualify. It wasn't just the first Disney coaster. It was the coaster EVERYONE was talking about. It was both technologically innovative as well as highly themed. But it also just didn't seem like anything anyone had ridden. And it's a visual spectacle. If you were a coaster enthusiast in the 50s and weren't especially interested in Walt's folly in Anaheim, Matterhorn changed your mind.

Those are so tricky because theyre so old with coasters going back 100 years. I tried to avoid parks in that scenario

Nemesis at Alton towers should have been on here imo

Magnum and Beast not on this list is a crime.
@AirtimeThrills13 сағат бұрын
Cedar point had so many coasters before though. Blue streak corkscrew gemini, all record breakers of their time
@jamie-dempsey12 сағат бұрын
@AirtimeThrills debatable on Gemini. I don't think blue streak put cedar point on the map
@duncanidaho8412 сағат бұрын
@@AirtimeThrills None of those coaster put Cedar Pt on the map. And Magnum surely got Cedar Pt past Racer and even The Beast. Riders today just cannot fathom what a HUGE deal 200ft was back then. Nobody was going to Cedar Pt. as a "Destination" until Magnum.

I'm curious what you mean by nobody was going to Cedar Point as a destination before Magnum? Cedar Point has been a multi-day resort destination for over one hundred years. People were going there before it had coasters. It has always attracted major crowds. You can point to coasters that shaped it's reputation and trajectory but it's silly to say it wasn't a major destination prior to Magnum. That's like saying nobody went to Disneyland before Matterhorn simply because you are focusing on coasters specifically.

Cpuld u consider leviathan as canada's tallest and fastest roller coaster?

I think I would have included Beast at Kings Island and Magnum at Cedar Point, but I absolutely agree with your number 1. Holiday World is one of my top park destinations and the Voyage is 95% of the reason
@AirtimeThrills11 сағат бұрын
With racer, blue streak, corkscrew, and gemini already there, beast and magnum didnt qualify for me but they did definitely elevate their parks tremendously

Six Flags Great America: Either Demon or American Eagle Six Flags St. Louis: The Boss Worlds of Fun: Orient Express Disney’s Animal Kingdom: Expedtiion Everest (I know it’s the only coaster, but people were only spending a few hours at the park and then park hopping. It needed that weenie.) Kings Island: The Beast

Very random number 1 pick, also I think Nemesis at Alton should be on the list somewhere
@AirtimeThrills11 сағат бұрын
Alton had a bunch of coasters before Nemesis so i wasnt so sure what to make of it

Maybe Corkscrew then as the park was technically open before that

I would add Gemini Cedar Point, Beast - Kings Island, Phantom- Kennywood , Batman Geauga Lake
@AirtimeThrills11 сағат бұрын
Gemini is a good option but they did already have corkscrew which broke records, and blue streak. As for kennywood, they had those 3 classic woodies before phantom
@jppurple9810 сағат бұрын
@@AirtimeThrills True but Gemini is what made Cedar Point gain national attention and same with Phantom. Just like Revolution and Colossus did for Magic Mountain 😎 This would make a great new series. So many others to add! Great video

You included Great American Scream Machine at SFOG but didn't include Screamin' Eagle at SFSL
