Seattle - The Response Boat Medium successfully completes a self-righting test. This new boat, which was delivered to the Coast Guard March 31, is a multi-mission capable boat expected to operate in coastal zones which include inshore and inland waterways and open ocean out to 50 nautical miles, but will routinely operate in shallow water. As an operational Coast Guard asset, it will rapidly respond to any Coast Guard mission on very short notice and will conduct planned patrols and training. It will replace the 41-foot utility boat which has been the workhorse of Coast Guard coastal stations for more than 25 years.

Unlike the 47' MLB (which is designed to continue mission after a rollover), the RB-M isdesigned to survive rollover, but aftewards, you return to base. Some of the electronics potentially get trashed with the rollover, but for the most part the interior stays dry. There is a rollover switch that pulls the engines back to idle in the event of a rollover so they don't overspeed during the roll. It's not good for the boat, but the crew lives to work another day.

Now that's nothing short of amazing! You can tell that the boat was fighting turning over the whole time, and once the center of gravity shifted enough BOOM! It was back upright as if to say, "Is that all you got?"

People are commenting saying wouldn't people in side get hurt if something like this happen. Well for how hard it is to flip this boat and the waters it would take to flip this boat would have to be pretty furious. And I say injury is better than drowning.

There is no ballast added to the RB-M. It's weight distribution is designed to have positive righting energy at all angles of heel (technically it's neutral at perfectly 180 degrees, but conditions will never allow it to stop at that position) I was involved with the project (on the government side) from early design review up until about a year ago as they were passing boat 100. I processed the weight reports on almost all of them and I can assure you, no ballast.

I am not sure if this is the same type of boat but I bought transported set up and converted a plate welding machine surplused from Boeing back in 1989 to weld aluminum plates together to navy specifications from our customer scrap. I had a letter on my office wall that was a thank you from the US Coast guard for saving the government $15,000 over the next lowest bidder to supply hull plates for their new roll over cutter. It was a great machine and could make 20 foot seam welds dead flat. We welded a mosaic of scrap together to form large flat plates which were cut to the hull shape and we beat every body else's price because our material was "free" the drops from full sheets that the customer had already paid for and left behind the shear. It was a fun project the machine was build back in the 60's and the tracking system was a sort of clock work computer. I could not rebuild that system most of the parts were gone. So I just used what was called a Ceycil seam tracker for the original sevo-motors up and down for the tacks. Then I went down to Radio Shack (which is no more) and bought a gamers joy stick for the side to side wired that into the weave servo. Then put an experienced welder on a platform under and just behind the electronic air scrubber with a large weld plate to look through and he rode the gantry arm along the weld delivering beautiful welds with perfect visual inspection realtime quality control. I paid the welder a $14.00/hour bonus with a pillow to rest his head on. They all (welders) loved it and he was a lot cheaper and faster then installing a $30K control system. I am cheap but I do good work and we don't have to replace everybody with robots. I know Elon would not agree with me he makes billions with a lot of investment money and a huge engineering staff. I made the companies I worked for milllions just me and mostly old rebuilt surplus machinery.

Google search MLB self righting. The Coast Guard has had 4 self righters. A 30' surf boat, nicknamed the "sneaker", the retired 44MLB (that thing was a work horse but slow), the 47ft MLB and a 45ft RBM which I'm not familiar with at all. The RNLI, the UK's Coast Guard, also has larger MLBs that are self righting. All have the ability to self right due to heavy ballast, usually lead weights in the bilges.
@MegaTigerUppercut
@MegaTigerUppercut 11 жыл бұрын
It's done slowly to help spot any issues, also, since the real 'righting' test begins only when the boat is fully turned over, the time it takes to get to that point is irrelevant.

Even if the house, or cabin, can help resist a rollover, a large enough wave can still roll the vessel far enough to go completely over. CG and CB, and their relationship to eachother are what matter. No weight "shifts around", except for items that may not be secured: coffee cups, etc. There are baffles in the fuel tanks to keep the fuel from rapidly shifting and affecting stability. It sure as hell IS "wrong way up" when it's 180 degrees from upright. And it DOES self right.

@kenfo0 on the contrary old sailing ships used to be top heavy so they had to add weights to the bottom (balast stones) as well cargo ships have balast tanks because when they load up they become top heavy so to balance them out they fill the bottom to correct the center of gravity. there are alot of ships that are top heavy. I've seen one of these boats being made and that's how they do it.

Warren Yazzie it uses buoyancy to right itself. The 47' has watertight compartments specifically for doing so. And the force of the water you are in/under is more of a factor than centripidal force....if you were upside down it's because a breaking wave did it on one of these boats, and it's a little rough under there.
