I love how even in Batman Returns, Penguin is an criminal lord of the underworld. Even though the gang is themed after a circus, Penguin is still essentially a mafia boss.

@jbvader7214 ай бұрын
@@Governor2310 The Razzies have never been known to be tasteful and just like the Oscars; the very award ceremony they mock they get it wrong most of the time. For example, they "nominated" Bruce Willis for Worst Performance by Bruce Willis for a string of pretty bad straight to video/streaming movies back in 2021 and then it was revealed that Willis has frontotemporal dementia which is getting worse and worse by the day as well as the fact that one of the executives on those movies took advantage of his aphasia (that's losing the ability to understand and express speech due to brain damage; in Willis' case most likely caused by the dementia) for years to make money. They rescinded it but the damage was done. Then there's also nominating Shelley Duvall for Worst Actress back in 1980 (first year into their little joke of a ceremony no less) for her performance in "The Shining" when they knew about the unnecessarily cruel treatment she received from director Stanley Kubrick on set. They also rescinded this but it was forty years too late.

I love how initially Max is unnerved by Fred's disembodied hand, but once Penguin uses it to shake his hand and then leaves it there, he just stands and looks at it like, "Seriously?"
@101Volts Жыл бұрын
Max was only unnerved that The Penguin *knew* about it. Max was fine with having Fred Atkins killed & dismembered, so Max likely killed business partners more than once (especially with pushing Selina out the window,) & he doesn't seem to mind holding dead body parts. He's wearing gloves, too, so it's not direct skin contact with germs.

He’s *WAY* more patient than me. Who would’ve thought that a man raised in the sewers would have more patience than me. (And more charisma)
@MelancoliaI5 жыл бұрын
This may be the finest bit of blackmail I've seen portrayed in a movie. Throughout his career, Schreck sent the evidence of his sins to the sewer, whether it be merely flushing some incriminating documents down the commode, disposing of the corpse of poor Fred, or dumping untold gallons of lethal toxic waste. It all went away; for him the Gotham sewers were Oblivion itself...or so he thought. Now Schreck is a soulless opportunist, so he isn't too rattled by this revelation and quickly moves to cut a deal. But the idea presented here is scary as hell. Imagine how terrifying it would be to have somebody in the shadows, someone you've never even met, patiently keeping a record of your dirty deeds, building leverage until he has absolute power over your life and reputation. I hear Cobblepot's working for the NSA these days. The government knows talent when it sees it.
@Sigma02833 жыл бұрын
That’s the thing with Penguin. Whenever a crime was committed, he always knew about it either before or within 24 hours after it was done and knew specifically who was involved. While he did commit crimes himself, he was like an information broker and was a regularly a source of information for Batman when he needed information.

You can tell Burton had more creative control over Returns so the film turned out a lot better than the original 1989 film which he admitted was mostly a boring film. 1989 Batman didn't quite feel like a Tim Burton film. As a kid, I never liked the original film even though it had a better villain than Returns. Batman Returns seems to have a much better grasp of the universe of Gotham City, so it doesn't have to explain it like in the original film. The film just seems to have better characters and more of a story to tell. I felt like the only thing the original film had to say was that Batman/Wayne had issues with Jack/Joker because he killed his parents. The relationship between Bruce had with Vicky didn't feel as natural as with Selina. You could feel that Bruce actually cared about Selina more in this movie despite the fact that he didn't spend as much time with her and didn't get to sleep with her.

It took me a while to realize that the Penguin only _found_ Max's associate's dismembered body. When I first watched this, it went over my head; I thought the Penguin killed Fred, but no, it was Max.

Danny Devito was so ghoulish and scary plus his body makeup fit the role so well. And this meeting is telling with blackmail, political and business corruption as is so common in the world.

If ever there was a great application for the *Villain/ Real Villain* memes, it's this movie. Although Shrek is clearly a villain, I think Penguin is more a result of tragedy here.
