By 1916 the military leaders of World War One were frustrated with the stalemate the war had turned in to. Both sides were dug into trenches unable to attack the enemy without suffering horrific losses before retreating back to their own lines. These leaders searched for new weapons that would be able to cross "no-mans land" and punch a hole in the enemy positions. In September of 1916 the British army introduced a weapon which they hoped would do just that. The tank made its battlefield debut on September 15, 1916.

The Mark I tank, unlike most other tanks, was designed so the crew could actually walk around in it. Since this makes the vehicle much more visible and means the vehicle would become very heavy if they wanted to add sufficient armor most modern tanks are significantly lower. The tail (or tadpole?) on the Mark 1 was added to the vehicle after they found out that with the weight in the back the tank could get stuck nose upwards in trenches, the tail simply keeps the tank straight up by preventing the rear from sinking into the trenches when they cross them.

Its nice to see that the british in world war one thougt about a cobi mark 1 tank in the future and the people who will buy it. Because they knew this, they made the tracs go all around the tank so once people want to roll the cobi tank forwards (and they press the front of the tank model) , the tracs should make sure that the tank didn't get damaged once pressed down

The proportions seem somewhat off, I'm pretty damn sure that Mark I-to-III tanks weren't painted in that green, either a light tan colour or naval-type camouflage since the tanks were of the ownership of the Navy anyway, that's why they're called landships. They missed the machineguns too, since this is a Mark I it should have Lewis Guns light machineguns, at least in the front between the commander's viewing hatch and the driver's one, the gun mounts should have them as well. I still prefer Brickmania's version, it has much more details and pkay features, it even comea with shells for the cannons.

I myself do believe in what you’re saying but I would like to point out some things. Considering that Cobi doesn’t have a piece molded in that sort of olive green color I would excuse that. And I found it quite unfair to compare a $395.00 set made for in the most part adults, to a set being mass produced set with a price of $45.99 that’s primary focus was on children. But I am on you’re side about the rather odd proportions and lack of machine guns.

attach a lego chain to the tail in 1 end and the other end connects to a stud on the hull, that's how you can keep the tail up

Please make a COBI tracks comparason video, i want to implement those tracks to my lego pf tank project, but i have no experience with them. Can they be driven by motors?(with their respective sprocket wheel, i mean...) also excellent vid as usual. You are a pro in the business 😎

Cobi release few RC set using these tracks, but each electonic components are pretty big(especially motors) so there will be hard time to fit them in custom project(for example this set 21901)

The tail was not useless! In the real mark l it was the steering! The original mark l could only use it's tracks to move forwards backwards And the wheels are supposed to steer it left right Yes I do know this doesn't sound like a tank function but they had to figure out how to steer correctly and that took quite some time...

From what I remember the tail was added to AID steering. They didn't work very well,so they were dropped.

the one thing that I hate about this set is that the two main guns can be accidentally snap off quite easily, and there's no spare gun connector

I didn’t like the top hatch and exhaust, to me they are in the wrong locations, so I moved the hatch more to the front and the exhaust nearer to the rear, seeing that the engine was close to the rear this made more sense to me.

A point that you missed out is that these tanks usually have 3/4 machine guns. Unless it's a heavy tank destroyer varient which has 1 machine gun up front. Elevation in side sponson guns could be solved with turntable lego parts but getting right colour is near impossible. Hatch on the roof should be towards the front above the 2 opening hatches. The un-ditching loge would have been nice as Well. If I get this set I'm doing a bunch of modifications. Still good set and good video Edit in - colours where usually factory grey so would have preferred that. No camouflage schemes unless it's much much darker green.

The unditching beam wasn't used until Mark IV, for the obvious reason that it would hit the superstructure here. Only Mark IV and later models were equipped with rails that allowed the beam to pass over the superstructure. As for machine guns, they were removable in Mark I and it seems that most historical sources show them removed from the tank.

Don’t forget that this is a ‘male’ variant of the tank, which contains artillery pieces. Only the ‘female’ variants included machine guns mainly for clearing out trenches.

Beach Raider yes but the male variant also included a few machine guns (1 at the front, 2 in each sponson) the female varient had 5/6 (1 up front, 2 in each side sponson and sometimes 1 at the rear)

The Machine guns were in part with the cannons, both being in the same casemate, That type of detail however is too much forma set like this to handle.
