I rarely miss clips, but this one got by me. Great rig, excellent job. My equipment thanks you (Mike.) If not for you my rigs, and other assorted equipment would be unusable. Keep saving our equipment from the closet, or worse the scrap heap.

You are exactly correct about the Cobra 2000, they need very few mods done to them. They was a great preforming radio from the factory. The only mods I would want done to one is an Expo channel kit, maybe open the clarifer and a little tweaking on the ALC and put the cover back on it !

I had two 1980’s 2000’s, my wife’s had added channels, minor peak and tweak with a nice swing and super clean tune with D-104 Desk mic. Mine was similar but had a power output matched perfectly with my Golden Eagle 750 Tube amp also with a D-104 Desk mic. It had a much bigger swing for sub. Just bought a 2000 after 30 years and want to send it to Mike for caps, clean and tune. It will need to be matched to a single tube 50 watt preamp feeding my 600watt sweep tube amp.

I remember when these radios hit the seen, everybody wanted them! I was quite happy with my HR2510 for a mobile and my SBE Console II for base....I have been inactive for 18(?) years, but I still have my radios....just incase! :)

I can't decide if I should keep this 2000 bone stock or put in a Mike/Mark frequency board (with scan!). I keep going back and forth on the issue. At the moment I am in the yes mode. 350 channels is one hell of a range.

Question to you Sr, After you Restore a radio (CB, export, or Full Ham) do you have them up for sale? That is if there not being restored for someone. Was just curious. 🤔 And by the way, love your videos! Enjoy the Detail that you go into on the radios. 👍🏻

You brought up the subject of burning up the transformer - with the heavy wire that they are wound with can they actually be destroyed. I have a power supply the wiring on both sides is burned up. Someone tried to repair it but failed. I removed all the attached wiring and just have the main hard-wound wiring and it still works. I used a 3 amp fused line to test one side blows the fuse - the other side produces 16.8 volts so now I know how it is wired. The circuit boards are fried - so I do not know if lightning hit the radio or what happened.

It would be interesting to see that! To see the before and after from popular mod's. I know what they sound like on air but have never seen them on a scope, spectrum analyzer and sinad meter. The schochty diode mod on the receive and NB is of particular interest to me due to my use of an old President Lincoln from the 1990's. The receive is ok little bit noisy with white noise but the NB is terrible and ANL are average at best and an improvement would be great!

If I knew how to contact you, you'd be my Cobra 2000 GTL GoTo Honest Mike. Have a New (to me) Unit arriving very soon. I want it in Peak Performance for another 40 years. What's not needed is more important than unnecessary and-ons. Though I like to know what an Asymod 6 is all about. Is it necessary, or highly advisable?

I wish I could find someone with an absolute stock Cobra 2000 GTL I could look at and take pictures of. I'm not the best at reading schematics, but trying to find out where the brown wire from the voicelock knob goes to. I'm also looking to take mods out of this radio to make it stock again.

i agree with you here no need to hot rob these radios. or even do them hillbilly extras channel's' i have one that had been modded extras hooked to the switch board , it had the yellow-/-orange wires to the pin 10/11 of the 8719 chip i removed the said wires patched the switch board now the radio went nuts no rx/tx wont change off a frequency ugggg i just threw it in storage for now get it looked at later down the road

As good as these radios receive - I did not know that the schottky Diodes would do anything for the radio, size spacing on a lot of radios restricts using larger caps in them.

Stupid to run them to their limit! If you want more power get an amp. With a good antenna as your base antenna you do not even need that much power. A base antenna has so much less ground less than a mobile and better gain! In fact a server power supply and a 1 or 2 transistor amp would more than get it down. It would not break the bank at all.
