I have no problem with the Mr. Miyagi backstory at all. Unlike Star Wars, the writers aren't trying to retcon or disrespect the Miyagi Legacy. They're actually trying to enrich and expand on the legacy. That's why they introduced his box of secrets. But sadly, many people think the writers were trying to raise the question "Oooh, was Mr. Miyagi a villain?" when they were actually giving us answers to why Mr. Miyagi was the way he was, blemishes and all. This story is necessary for Daniel (and us) to understand that Mr. Miyagi is capable of having a spotty/flawed past, and still be worth respect and admiration. Daniel needs to learn he can still look up to Mr. Miyagi as a father, without worshipping him like a flawless idol. I'm excited to find out how Daniel will overcome, arguably, his biggest flaw. I trust the writers. They've carried the show this far.

Miyagi was a war veteran and a killer who had clearly been in a lot of fights before he even left Japan and even more of them after. This is why he teaches Daniel san to not fight and that it leads nowhere. This is why he has secluded himself and become somewhat of a hermit. He was always a good person though. Nothing that came out in this story has changed that and I'm sure there will be more of a justification for what happened later.
@reecedignan83655 ай бұрын
Yeah listening to alot of vets who come home, especially after being in the heat of combat. Something they always talk about is that fight still being in them, that being out of one just doesn’t feel right. It takes them quite a bit of time to find themselves adapting back and settling their fight down too. As such Miyagi could have been very similar. Serving in the war, being captured on a certain battlefield, learning of the loss of his family and while he may of settled in America it wasn’t going to be easy for a young Asian guy who fought for the Japanese to get far. As such him being more reckless and violent early in his life as ways to just let out that fight, get himself hurt or killed to rejoin his family and just get buy in life itself, yeah it’s likely a dark start. But we see where it ends. And Daniel in many ways needs this lesson too of learning that a man’s past and life don’t define where they are going to go in years to come especially when their priorities change. - a lesson he needs to learn so he can accept a certain Eagle who’s past may be dubious but his growing family seems to be helping him rearage his priorities and life.

@@anarchclown Yeah people don't understand Okinawa wasn't always exactly in good relations with Japan. Many times Japan tried to invade them. In fact, China had better relations with Okinawa. In fact, that's where Karate came from. From business trade relations between China and Okinawa. In Okinawa it was called Tou De which means Chinese Hand. This is next China sent scholars to RyuKyu Kingdom in Okinawa as good will and two Kung fu styles, Xing Yi Quan and Southern White Crane were the foundation for Tou De. Thenin the 20's Japan sent its Olympic head coach and head Judo person to Okinawa to scout some masters and they brought over Chojun Miyagi of Goju-Ryu and Gichin Funokoshi of Shotokan, and it was Gichin who changed the name to Karate. So Mr Miyagi was named after Chojun since Chojun's student taught Robert Mark Kamen the writer of the original Karate Kid movie. The Sekai Tekai arena being that small compared to what everyone thought it would be was mad disappointing. It's not just that too, the entire format of it is disappointing for how only six people for each Dojo can compete, The 1v1 ruleset for the finals, and of course, the way the story kept telling us that the tournament was going to be dangerous, and that 'People have died' and yet once we see it, turns out it's just a small room, with people who look completely normal if not inconsequential. We literally know no one's names there except Kuon and that one other Korean guy that was the previous ace of the Dojo. And thinking of how other forms of media handle and build up their big tournaments from Dragon Ball to even a game like Tekken, it's clear from a presentation perspective, the Sekai Tekai fails at both scale and depth to warrant what we now know is the finale arc.

I disagree about Daniel. If you try to see things from his perspective his actions make sense. He has good intentions and the show has shown him to be right about a lot of the things he’s been saying from the beginning. He’s certainly no more flawed than Johnny. Imo, the writers have always written them as equals. Their mistakes are almost always due to misunderstandings or understandable moments of weakness. Surprisingly, I actually see a lot of fans saying that they thought Daniel was more reasonable than Johnny this season. Either way, Daniel has definitely grown from the earlier seasons. I mean, he was willing to let Johnny name the dojo Eagle Fang, and he generously gave Johnny a job. A job that Johnny seems pretty ungrateful for.

Of course "finder's keepers", and perhaps at the time, the possessor of the necklace was probably even heartless enough to punctuate his refusal to return the necklace with a few era-appropriate slurs. Miyagi might have made several attempts, each more desperate than the last to reclaim the necklace the "right" way, until he was left no choice. Of course, the necklace had to have some extreme value, like belonging to his late wife or something. I mean, honestly, Daniel has done worse. Assaulting a hockey team a few seasons ago? Sure, the moment itself was badass, "no be there" and all that, but from said hockey team's perspective, Daniel escalated that to a physical confrontation. If they wanted to make the incident make headlines, it easily could be spun into a bad light for him.

It’s like an addict relapsing after going through rehab. Daniel needs a kick in the mouth. Dude is becoming a whiney and I hate it. I think they should’ve kept Barnes in as a Sensei with Johnny and Daniel, to me that would’ve gave his character more purpose. Doesn’t really make sense for him to have this “contest” if he hasn’t been training a whole lot. If the keep to where Myagi does have a past I think it grounds his character and makes him human, not this perfect Sensei Daniel thinks he is. Makes him more relatable and his teachings have more impact. Overall I’d give it a 3 out of 5. Hope part 2 isn’t as rushed.

I've always enjoyed Cobra Kai ever since seeing the first season, but I don't know, there was just a lotta stuff here that I wasn't a huge fan of. From how they handle certain plot points like Johnny and Daniel's constant bickering to even just the narrative decisions they went with like the trials they did to select the top 6, there's a lot of things I just didn't think were well handled or had the necessary foundation to be expanded upon in the second and third part, and have it be concluded successfully. And there's other things too where I can see and even enjoy certain plot points they brought to the season like Tory developing a positive relationship with Sam and Miyagi-do before breaking down entirely from the loss of her mother and Devon's Drive to prove herself, causing her to do some pretty shitty things, but I wish they expanded on those two parts with more interactions between them and the cast so that they would hit harder. (Also, I find it dumb how no one chased off for Tory after she stormed out like that from the time the fight was happening to the day afterwards like what). I would expand on my points more with actual examples but I want to just get this comment out first before I take way too long typing it and it'll be too late. Just wanted to ask if anyone here also feels the same way?

My exact thoughts as well for this first part of Season 3. Hopefully things will be ramping up for the next two parts. With the Miyagi name change revelation in that passport of his, I think this was the showrunners fixing that flaw that apparently was in The Next Karate Kid movie where in the opening scene when Miyagi was getting that military medal/award, when they announce his name in that scene it was his actual wrong name. The producers of the movie chalked it up to a mistake/blunder but the showrunners of Cobra Kai decided to go with it and to put that into cannon.
@valiantham60725 ай бұрын
Main problem with Cobra Kai is the short runtime combined with the absolute plethora of characters at this point. The first few seasons managed this much better because they didn’t focus on every single character. Season 1 was mainly focusing on just Johnny, Daniel, Miguel, and Robby. Then, in Season 2 onwards, they mix a few extra characters into the mix and it’s just gotten too difficult to divide the already small runtime between so many characters. I’m hoping that the next to parts deviate some screen time from less important characters, but I doubt they’re going to do that considering it’s the final season. I think learning about Miyagi’s flawed past is the only way that Daniel can be humbled. He iustifies everything based on Miyagi and even when Johnny tried to fully embrace Miyagi do, it still isn’t enough for Daniel

First of all, it’s really good to see you back. Secondly, you literally hit the bull’s-eye on every single gripe I had about the first five episodes. Everything from Daniel being extremely annoying to the annoying on again off again friendship between Johnny and Daniel and so on. I don’t know if I found myself really bored with this season so far or if the show has just run its course

Man, forget Miyagi, cuz they straight up made Amanda, who has shown to care for Tori considerably since the fourth season and Robby whose her literally boyfriend, not reach out or at least chase after her in between the time she stormed off to when she appears again at the Sekai Tekai. Its just so much of a stupid contrivance that unless the writers blatantly address it in the next part where Tori cuts all contact with everyone and is quite literally not at her apartment anymore and gone off the face of the bloody Earth to Robby and the rest of the gang, then this entire subolot is just dumb and only happened for the sake of plot.

I think they didn’t show any of that to avoid taking away the shock of Tory showing up with Kreese. Which I think was the right call. I fully expect them to have a line in the next episodes where someone says she didn’t answer any calls.

I can believe Johnny beating Mike because he now knows Miyagi-Do defense. He has two styles to take from. Sure as they referenced Mike Barnes is “built different” but he only just got back into Karate. It’s been a traumatic couple of months for him.

The writers are leaning WAY to hard into miyagi do. I thought this show was going to be about changing cobra kai for the better. Which I thought was where eagle fang was going to go and now eagle fang is dead. That pissed me off more than Johnny winning (which he should since he has been training and has two style now...Barnes never learned miyagi defense and Johnny has)
@johneastwood30395 ай бұрын
@@cheetah219 I always think the characters should be the ones we know and love from the movies. There's no point bringing a cool character back from the movies and they're a completely different character. Mike Barnes should still be Karate's bad boy from Karate Kid 3. Or at least resemble that character as much as possible, which wouldn't include losing to Johnny Lawrence. They could have at least made it a draw.
@bleedingcrystal47225 ай бұрын
He would have defintely beaten Johnny when they were kids, but he was written to have abandoned karate and hasn’t been back at it nearly as long as Johnny has. I absolutely hated Johnny beating the 5 guys from Korea last season, but this wasn’t bad writing.

When Johnny beat Mike, wasn't he using moves he'd picked up from Miyagi Do? I guess that if Mike had kept training, he'd have figured out how to address some of those moves by now, so I'm on the fence about that fight. Glad Mike stays a good guy though.

I’m having SUCH a hard time forgiving the writers, for having Johnny say; “After this you and I are done - for good” 🙄 I got so pissed. How many F’ing times are they gonna backtrack on this crap!? It’s just Season 4 all over again now. The Sekai Taikai is one tournament they SHOULD’ve been completely in_SYNC for, going into it like true BRO’s! THAT would’ve been the mature thing to do, and how you’d separate it from the same old tiring route. So yeah, now it just feels like Season 4 again, and I HATE it!!!! I think you're missing a big piece of the picture with the Mike and Johnny fight. You're thinking about the KK 1 Johnny and the KK3 Barnes fighting. Yes in that instance Mike wins. But now with Johnny training for a few years now, and in Miyagi do, Mike not training atall, AND it was Miyagi do that beat Mike in KK3. Adult Johnny has the edge over adult Mike easily. The fight was written accurately.

I've been a big fan of the show since 2019, and I especially enjoyed the first 3 seasons and season 5, the only reason I wasnt as big a fan of season 4 was because of The Last Jedi-esque opening where they "subverted" our expectations by having Johnny and Daniel still bicker and waste time, and by having Terry Silver stay out of the limelight until the finale, whereas season 5 delivered on everything I was truly waiting for. That said, while I love these characters so much and I enjoyed watching them thanks to the always amazing performances by the actors, but this seasons truly does feel like they're just recycling old plot beats. Of course I'm waiting for the next 10 episodes before passing final judgment, but Im rooting for the show to end on a high note.

When you talked about Tory’s story arc and her relationship with Kreese, this exactly tells me why we needed another episode to talk about that or at least one more season instead of forcing things into season 6 by cramping it all together in one - it’s like how the saying goes never put all your eggs in one basket. This show needed a season 7 or season 8 at least to have a season finale.
@luisz2225 ай бұрын
It’s funny how most of the drama could’ve just been resolved if the characters bothered to openly and honestly communicate with each other. For the kids I understand why they’re being so dramatic all of the time cause they’re y’know teenagers they’re supposed to be impulsive and over dramatic at times but the adults are just childish Daniel especially. Johnny has come a long way and Daniel refuses to see any growth in Johnny cause he doesn’t like how he does karate and wants to make Johnny another Daniel basically.
@elmastero15 ай бұрын
Mike Barnes' rustiness makes sense, given his prolonged absence from fighting. In his first fight at Silver's house, he gets knocked unconscious, showcasing his lack of practice. In contrast, Johnny Lawrence takes on multiple opponents and holds his own, demonstrating his continued growth as a martial artist.Notably, Johnny has evolved beyond his pure Cobra Kai roots, incorporating Miyagi Do defensive techniques into his arsenal. He has fought Daniel LaRusso to a draw and, although he lost to Silver, this setback likely motivated him to improve further. His fight with Chozen started strong, and while the outcome wasn't shown, it's clear Johnny remains a formidable opponent. In comparison, Mike hasn't trained in over 30 years, making his rustiness comparable to Johnny's in Season 1. Therefore, a loss for Mike is a realistic and logical consequence of his prolonged inactivity.

Hey, Great review!! I agree with most of what you said!! I was bothered with Chosen also I wanted more from his character. I guess time will tell. Mr Miyagi’s story didn’t bother me to much but I do wish we got to see More items from the box and I also wish they had a better story arc for him then the random guy at the gym that knew him . that was week they could of had another episode going into the mystery of his past. I know they are saving more for the 2.ed part but they could have written a stronger story. Torys story was the best in the 5 episodes. Kresse story was weak also so far. I agree there should have been another scene with kreese and Tory possibly in the same episode where they have more info on Mr. Miyagi and also throw in one scene where chosen is saying goodbye and going back to the airport to go to Okinawa that just seemed like a poor job editing. the last time you see him he is looking at his phone? Non of the kids ask about his whereabouts? I’m hoping the part 2 and 3 are kick ass these first 5 episodes were not so great!!! BIG LETDOWN. If you watch the 3ed movie you will notice Daniel has a shitty attitude just like he does now as a grown-up they didn’t show much in the first karate kid or the second karate kid but it’s very evident in the third movie. He’s a true villain in this show.

Some of the dynamics between characters are getting a little old and drawn out. So many lessons learned, except how to communicate apparently. I’m kind of tired of poor poor Tori, and quite frankly the Tori/Sam and Robbie/Miguel thing wore itself out a while ago. It’s all still good fun but they are running out of things to do with these guys Hopefully they prove me wrong in parts 2 and 3, but this is the first season where I wasn’t compelled to sit and binge as soon as it came out.

The one thing is that we're only 1/3 of the way through this final season. We could end up getting a lot more information regarding Mr. Miyagi's backstory. Maybe it's a brother of his or maybe it was him before he became balanced. I'm hoping we get more interaction with Johnny and Tory too. It did feel like she made a quick turn, but I think he could help her out a lot with her situation. I would like to see more of Mike Barnes too. Felt like he was utilized and then forgotten right away. I'm really glad they didn't create rift between Miguel and Robby again. Same thing with Tory and Sam. Excited for part 2 to see how they handle the Sekai Taikai. I do wish they stop the friends/not-friends arch between Daniel and Johnny. It's gotten quite old and repetitive.

I feel like the 5 episodes could have been condensed into two. The school scenes with Kyler ate up time, Miyagi's Story while fine made Daniel into a Miyagi worshipper putting an unecessary rift between him and Johnny. Hawk was disrespected, and Tory turning to Cobra Kai again undoes the development from season 2-5. Even if it is understandable based on how the story went, it was still wrong the the writers to do that to her. Devon has not had enough development to be stealing the spotlight from Kenny. And the fights while still great, had some slow motion scenes that seemed to serve no purpose. 6-6.5/10 Flawed, but I still enjoyed it.

Excellent video and I totally understand your views and concerns. But I am nowhere near giving up on John, Josh and Hayden yet. I have to believe they started the season this way to finish it up with the biggest bang for the endgame which they had in mind since day 1. Their humor and storylines have always been a bit on the raunchy side. But their endgames have always been phenomenal. I have faith 👍

Chozen being a bit goofy and light-hearted is a prelude, I think, to some heavy things that will go down in parts 2 and 3. The thing with Kumiko disappearing could bring back some weight to his character. He will once again return to being a badass. Part 1 is just a set up and with Chozen, I think, he will be prime Chozen in parts 2 and 3. Part 1 had a lot of goofy parts, so the whole season would not be so dark and intense. Now we got a lot of that out of the way, I think the really good and heavy parts are coming.

I think the main issue with Daniel is that his outlook is too black & white as he views Miyagi his father figure as a pure perfect example that makes no mistakes which would make his Karate style and history being wonderfully pure with no darkness. But, throughout the series, Daniel is slowly learning some secrets that Miyagi wasn't a perfect man and even his fighting style & history has a bit of darkness. I believe as soon Daniel truly accepts the flaws of Miyagi, he in turn would grow more as a person and fully accept Johnny & others by realising that the world is not black & world, all of us can have darkness and goodness it's just learning to be.. balanced 😊

I'm sure the writers will soften the Mr. Miyagi backstory but I'd be happy if they left it in warts and all. I think it's safe to say his past was always likely to have some less than appealing aspects even given what little we know. The fact he was able to find peace and become the character he became makes him even greater for it and Daniel should come away from this feeling better about the fact he played a part in making Mr. Miyagi's later years as balanced and happy as they were. They both ended up needing eachother.

Yeah i think Myagi was saving the day or taking back something that was stolen from someone. Orrr he really did have a dark past and turned his life around. We knew he had a dark side with his drinking and pain.

Here is my theory, Kim is a Miagi's brother, it does make sense, there were always defensive and offensive styles, there were always good vs evil, i think this might be their genious plan, to create two dojos and let thier students to learn from every style, and the best student would be that, that first gets that he gotta accept both styles equal, finds the balance.
