I am the head of our church security team. I purchased ten of these radios for our security team members. We have three separate large buildings both two levels two of which are steel frame construction. The campus covers about four acres. These radios have proven to be reliable and long lasting as we have had them for over two years. Communication center in the lower floor of one building and comm is reliable over the whole campus inside and out. The batteries last a long time as well! Very happy with this equipment!

Thank you for doing this review. There is no privacy in a "privacy code," that is a tone squelch. A subaudible tone only the radio can hear. There are 2 types of tone squelch for most radios, digital and analog. If it is a privacy code 38 it is very likely analog. For some, it is not about privacy as in secure comms, it is about not being walked on and having a conversation free from jammers. These seem to be good radios.

If you and your receiving radio friend are both standing on mountains facing each other 40 miles apart, and the planets are aligned, then you MIGHT be able to talk to each other. :-) A slim cellphone case may work for holding the 685. Also, there are 2-way radio cases available on both Amazon and Ebay which should hold the radio. On the right side of the 685, there are 2 rubber flaps which can be lifted. The top one is to plug a headset or ear bud in, and the bottom one is a USB plug to charge the radio separate from the base charger.

He does no know about g m r s there is your 20 miles you go through a repeter net work I have 6 repeter's hear in my city thay cover three countys and 6 citys but you need a license at 35.00 and you radio need's some work

I have a 2 set px650 and tbeir near identical in specs of the px655. I don't see any different when it says 350000 sq ft 25 floor range. Also comes privacy coded 22 channels etc. But anyways I'm fine with the px650 costed 100 for 2 without the headsets but works excellent. Although somewhere it states 42mile maximum range which is bull maybe 1 mile max or 3 4ths of a mile.

on G M R S is the long range thay never tell you that becouse thay dont know I do I am a license holder for gmrs on a repeter set up I talk to chicago weekly

The one with the screen sells on Amazon , under the name RX680. The PX seems to be a business model

TheChico868 yeah i saw that, the walkies look identical but just that the RX680 has orange on the sides and it advertises for 38miles and the RX685 only shows at Walmart and advertised for 40mile range, but they look identical.

Looks like the RX685 has to use it's own proprietary battery pack. That's too bad. It would have been better if we could use AAs also.

Nameless Droner good choice, I mostly use the 655 because I love the belt clip , I always mount it on my car visor . But I love how the 685 looks, it seems more heavy duty .

The range is "up to" depends on terrain you are in too ...got the rx680 can't even talk to my gf same apartments we were both inside yet says 3 miles in town

too many buildings between you and your radio work's off a 1/2 watt transmitter there is your reasion for not working or line of site

Code is usually referring to your talk code. You need to match channel & talk code.
