Based on industry statistics, Ryanair flew 14.2m passengers in April 2022 with a 91% loading factor, vs Wizz carrying 3.6m passengers with a 84% loading. Comparing 2019 through 2021, Wizz % of Ryanair passengers rose from 26% to 29%, however year to date it has dropped back to 25%. In addition as of the end of December 2021, Ryanair had liquidity of 3.7 Billion Euros Vs Wizzair of 1.4Billion Euros. So indeed prorata to business size, Wizzair has 38% of numberical liquidity of Ryanair, vs 29% of passenger numbers, but this would not seem that much out of kilter. Finally in their financial year to end of March 2022, Ryanair lost 355million Euros vs Wizz at 645million Euros. Ryanair is forecasting a profit rebound for 2023, but Wizzair is still predicting losses. Viewing all of the data over the past 10 years, no doubt Wizzair have grown from a small niche player to the 2nd largest low fares airline in Europe, however again based on more recent data both pre covid, covid and now post covid, the data is not supporting your arguement about Wizzair taking over as Budget airline king from Ryanair anytime in the foreseeable future. Stockprice forecasts for both companies would also not support your case.

@Donal Crotty I Agree with you. I did a detailed comparison of the financials of both these airlines and Ryanair outperformed Wizz Air in most, if not all of the financial indicators. Wizz Air may have the youngest fleet there is, with strong liquidity and least carbon footprints of all the EU LCCs but still it has a long way to go to take the King head on. West Europe is still Ryanair's bastion of operations and Wizz Air is no where near ousting Ryanair as the biggest LCC of EU

I enjoyed the video. However, I work for one of Wizzair's close competitors and want to correct a few things. Wizzair has high liquidity because the owner of Wizz has a very good relationship with the Hungarian government which essentially bankroll the airline. You mention Ryanair may have its thrown taken away. But last time I checked Ryanair increased its programme this year by 15% and operated over 3000 flights in one day last week alone, which is a record for the airline group. Compared to Wizzair's 800 flights and easyJets 1600 flights. I think Wizzair will need to further increase it's fleet to have any chance of topping Ryanair. I do think however Wizzair will push easyJet very close... Final thing to note is Ryanair hedges fuel and Wizz doesn't. So lets see what happens in the next 18 months....

Wizz Air’s CEO also has good relations with countries on Balkans. They get money for operating some flights from Bosnia, Macedonia and Romania. Also they have a base in Abu Dhabi almost at governmental costs, as well as fully sponsored expansion plans to Saudi Arabia. Josef Varadi (CEO) does really good thing of getting a lot of connections in business and politics. Wizz Air operates less flight also because they don’t make ultra short-haul flights like London - Paris, Barcelona - Majorca, Dublin - Manchester. EasyJet as well. Wizz Air has barely any of these short flight and operate on longer routes. Also they have noticeable amount of 5h+ routes, while Ryanair barely has any. So if comparing PAX*KM, difference will be less significant. Also Wizz Air is the European fastest growing airline, having over 400 orders which are delivered rapidly, while Ryanair only around 150 and after getting about 60 MAX 200 which were built but grounded due to MCAS issues now deliveries to Ryanair are slower. Wizz Air will still not catch up Ryanair, except if there is some crisis, badly affecting Ryanair but not Wizz Air but they will get big enough to take away some destinations from Ryanair.

The tax structure in the US prevents airlines from offering tickets as cheap as the ultra low cost carriers in Europe. Airports in Europe are privately owned for profit. In the US airports are operated by local government and they are cash cows. The taxes you see on your ticket are just for what you are charged. The airports also charge the airlines and the airline passes that on to you. Hotel taxes, entertainment taxes and airport fees are ways to raise money without upsetting voters because most of it is paid by visitors.

Wizzair isn't all success though. In 2020 they tried to enter the norwegian domestic market, counting on then-struggling Norwegian to go bankrupt, and being able to undercut competitor prices. This failed spectacularly though as they more or less got bullied out of the country by boycotts from companies, municipalities, and even the prime minister, in protest against Wizzair's horrible labour and union policies. Also, their inexperienced pilots couldn't handle northern norwegian winter conditions, leading to many flights in a short period of time getting cancelled or being forced to turn back to Oslo, when competitors landed as normal. In summary, because of Norwegian not folding as expected, extremely bad PR even before they got started, and loss of confidence due to cancellations, Wizz had to pull out of the market only 8 months after they started.

Having a younger fleet does not always = better profit. This is a common misunderstanding and Coby has fallen for it. Younger fleet normally = more aicraft repayments or lease payments. These payments eat into the profit margin. Older aircraft may burn more fuel (to be honest the difference here is in the single digits of percentage) but they are bought and paid for by in large. Meaning no lease payments or repayments. American Airlines and Delta kept their 30+ year old DC9s and MD80s in their fleet many years longer than expected because they were paid for and needed only maintenance spent on them. They found this was more cost effective than continually purchasing new aircraft that came will training, parts, lease/payment and other sundry expenses. Then you have to consider just how much the airline is actually paying for their aircraft. M'OL has stated on several occasions he "r*ped" Boeing for his fleet. Meaning he is paying very likely less for his 737s than anyone else and will almost certainly be paying less per 737 Max than Wizz will be paying for their A320/A321NEOs. The numbers are not known to me. But I would hedge a bet that Ryanair still has an operational cost advantage over Wizz and will still be able to undercut them on any competing route. In summary, your title is misleading and at this time factually incorrect.

I flew a lot with all airlines in the video Ryanair, Easyjet, Wizzair, Norwegian , GermanWings, Vueling. I personally have greatest confidence ( more than 100 flights) in Ryanair, Easyjet and lowest in Wizzair ( costed me a handful of ruined holidays, more than 10 cancelled flights and no basic respect for the clients no chance in paying fees) The advantage Wizzair have is the fact that they have sometimes lower prices and they are conveniently situated in a region full of travel eager population and maybe their more aggressive approach in Middle East and Eastern Europe. But their total lack of predictibility may obliterate these advantages.

Over LCCs in Europe are too local and have small market. For business model. Wizz Air is expanding rapidly, getting new A321neo almost every 2 weeks, I oftentimes fly on aircraft which were just delivered to Wizz Air (MXP - BUD), once there was even a plane with less than 20 takeoff-landing cycles! In addition to what is said about Wizz Air advantages, because of more modern fleet they also pay lower taxes for ecological and noise emissions which will get higher and higher in Europe overtime. Wizz Air also gets governmental subsidies, most noticeably on Balkans and in the UAE, while Saudi government encourages them to expand their operational network there.

Back when Ukraine was in its calmer days and I would want to fly somewhere, I remember that Wizzair was basically east europe's ryanair. But i was frustrated that despite all agreements made that shouldve ensured travel with these carriers would be cheap, it would often overprice UIA. Also in our heads we basically had this forumation: wizzair for east europeans, ryanair for west europeans, and easyjet for brits wanting to go to magaluf. I personally liked flying with wizzair and my recent flight from charleroi to warsaw was safe and pleasant. Lovely Ukrainian crew on board. The Ryanair flight I had from Kyiv to London was also nice and straight to the point. As long as we got somewhere safe I was okay and the pilots safely landed in London despite the rough weather.

I flew with Ryanair about 20 years ago. I was blown away by the €10 round trip ticket, but had to really go out of the way to get to the airports they flew out of. I wanted to go from Milan to Hamburg for Christmas but the flight went from Bergamo to Lübeck - which meant hours of bus and train transport on each end. Still, I was able to do the whole trip for less than $100 during a busy holiday season which was fine by me. At the time Ryanair was pretty new and had pretty limited options as far as destinations go.

European here. I've flown Ryanair lots of times. Just a week ago I returned from a trip to England with them. My flights cost £200 (Poznan in Poland to Bristol), with reserved seats, priority boarding and 10kg carry on plus another small bag. That's not as cheap as it was pre-Covid, but what is? I've always considered RA to be a bus. No frills, not the cleanest, but with amazingly quick turnarounds and usually early to arrive. I had one nightmarish experience with Whizzair, but no problems whatsoever with RA. Whizz may have benefitted from its liquidity during Covid, but RA is back at full thrust, and my money would be on them to prevail.

Easy jet have created their own problem with respect to cancellations. During the covid restrictions of the last 2 years, all airlines suffered…EasyJet to save money offered alternative contracts to flight deck crews in respect of a reduction of hours they fly. So now the demand of flights have or nearly have returned to pre- covid times. But the flight deck have not returned to 100% of flying allowance leaving the airline with a shortage of pilots. Some pilots are happy with their reduction of hours. Hence why flights have been cancelled

Will be interesting to see what the financial results are for 2022. Ryanair is heavily fuel hedged this year compared to 2023. Comparatively Wizz has lower staff costs. One thing, Wizz did layoff staff, including pilots (Ryanair didn’t). Wizz re-hired pilots at much lower costs. At some point the consumer shall be more conscious about wanting to pay such low-fares.

There is also one more political aspect to it. Wizz as Hungarian airline has access to Russian imported fuel as Hungary continues buing Russian oil despite most of the countries refused to do so. Side effect is that Russia sell oil to Hungary at least 30% discounted so that means wizz might be able to have better fuel price at homebase than ryanair, combined with newer fleet might be significant.

Wizz Air has been growing fast in the last year. I usually choose Ryanair for short flights, but recently flew with Wizz Air for the first time, and I would say Wizz Air products and services are cheaper. Wizz Air had better legroom and the cabin crew was super friendly. My flight with them to Abu Dhabi from Athens was around 30-40 EUR each way. I would say Wizz Air flight tickets might be more expensive, but the planes and service are better.

Just as an FYI ryanair is currently expanding exponentially. Its main hub, Dublin, has so many flights and passengers travelling through that the airport simply cant handle it. the demand to travel in ireland is higher then it was in 2019 with new flights being added to new destinations and airlines constantly. It will not struggle to keep up. Trust. And also extra competition is better for the consumer so congrats to everyone :)

What most of the commentators below do not realise is that before Ryanair appeared in the mid-80s, it cost £600 to fly from London to Dublin (return) with either BA or Aer Lingus, and that was a lot of money in those days! The "national flag" carriers like BA, Lufthansa, KLM, SAS and Air France were horrendously expensive, really only for business class. Holiday-makers used charter flights. Thanks to Ryanair and the other budget carries who followed, people can move around Europe like never before.

I frequently fly with Wizz Air. They are cheep and I am able to book tickets for return trip for only around 80-100$. It means a lot, because I really can't afford to fly around Europe if the prices are 300-400$ for return trip. But low cost has it's limits. You can only fly with backpack, any additional luggage is premium. That is not problem for myself, since I can travel for 4-5 days with only a backpack, but I understand the people who can't. Even then, the price for luggage is not too bad (around 50$), but then it's not as cheep. Some other things are also different - you need to check-in online, because airport check-in are not free (which is fine with me, I check-in online anyway), you don't get anything for free during the flight (snacks, water), and (and this is the biggest flaw for me personally) the seats are fixed and can't be moved backwards. But for 1,5 / 2 hour flight it's ok, it's cheep and that is what matters for myself. I never flown with Ryan but I guess it's the same thing more-less.
