So many people have asked how I trained Nanners to sing this song. Here's the funny thing. He almost trained himself. He was a very smart and sociable baby bird. I started whistling the song and clapping my hands, and within about 2 weeks, he started to repeat me. He was exceptional, and his little brain was like a sponge. I miss him so much, but I am forever thankful for this page and for all the supporters. You all really help me keep his memory alive. It brings a tear to my eye knowing that so many people are experiencing the same joy in him that I did. Thank you all so much, and Happy New Year!

I love how he decided to "clap". Makes me miss my cockatiel whom I effectively grew up with. We just couldn't get things right for him leading up to the end, I haven't pursued another bird because I had so much trouble understanding his needs and desires and I'm sure his mental health is what caused the decline in his physical health and ultimately his sudden demise. I'd recommend against anyone taking bird ownership lightly, in the beginning I thought I could figure out as I went how properly to attend him mentally and emotionally as I'm accustomed to comparatively easy to read dogs though I just couldn't get it right and thus his quality of life was certainly compromised. I'm waiting until I have the time, energy and knowledge necessary to properly care for an animal as intelligent and needy as birds are, as it's a pet owner's responsibility to provide not only for the animal's physical needs but it's quality of life as well. I hope I can make up for my past failings, and I sincerely advise anyone who is considering bird ownership to preempt as much of your learning as possible as the bird cannot wait for you to get the hang of things. Also to understand that although they are often confined to one area while caged and physically much smaller than a dog that they will require as much or most probably more care, attention, and patient understanding than a dog. Don't take it lightly and please reserve your patience, because your labor will pay off when your new friend learns to trust you.

Hi Sam! I didn't do anything special to train him, but whistle over and over and clap my hands. They are very impressionable when they are young, so just keep whistling to him. Your handsome should start picking things up quick. My Neo is now 7 months old and he is starting to pick things up quick. You can usually tell if your bird likes something by how they stop and listen. It has been my experience that they are more likely to repeat something if they like it. Good luck!!!
@DianaJ197911 жыл бұрын
I have 2 cockatiels, the male learned all kinds of sounds and sometimes sings a piece o laurel and hardy. He give me kisses when I ask him en loves to cuddle. He also learned the ringtone of my mothers phone. Now she had to change her ringtone because everytime she grabbed her phone but then my Chucky made the sound.. But I still think it's hard to teach cockatiels.... do you know how long you can teach them new things/sounds? Only when they are very young?
@MsQuakerparrot11 жыл бұрын
Hi! Well, I believe Tiels' learn throughout their entire life. However,their brains are like little sponges when they are young. That us when they will learn the most. They will continue to learn as they get older, just not as quickly. Our Neo is 8 months old now. He really started to talk at about 6 months old. Good luck!

Hi, I know this is self indulgent of me, I used to breed cockatiels when I was younger and had a big aviary in my back yard. One chick turned out to be blind. I named Boots (I guess he felt safer on the ground) so we named him Boots because he was always underfoot. He used to stick his head in the corner or in bits of pipe I'd put in and sing to himself. He had a beautiful raspy singing voice just like your Nanners but he stuck to his native song and didn't learn any human songs. His trill was brilliant though. After 30 years, hearing your Nanners made me think of my Boots. You have a gorgeous little bird there, he deserves a bird whistle of his own :)

So... I might have done a thing. My hubby and I went into the pet store to get a couple snails for our fish tank. All of a sudden I hear this Tiel wolf whistle and also whistle what sounded like a few bars of "If You're Happy and You Know It". I look around and saw this bird in a back office. I inquire and they said he needs a vet visit and then will be available. I immediately left my name and number. Hopefully they will call me when he's ready. It was almost like fate. Yes. I would say Tiels are a good first bird. Please keep in mind that having a bird is a commitment. This breed's lifespan is approximately 15-20 years. Also, I suggest finding a breeder. You will have a much better quality bird. He will be easier to handle and train. Good luck!

i thought it was 25-30 i read it from a book. i wonder which one is the right one

1. thanks for this,especially with all the stuff in the background its quite obvious u take amazing care of him -I like to think the best way u can tell is by looking at the way he thinks: doesn't look neurotic to me one bit. thank you for that.) that u take very good care of him. 2. I was thinking of waiting for an older parrot type bird to go through my city's local no kill animal shelter because if im being honest with myself I can't make a 15-20 year commitment to a bird(not for lack of want, but im 28 and unmarried -lol I'd never be able to give away a stalwart friend because my future wife doesn't want birds/the noise for the next 10-15 years lol) so i'd like to give a great home and be a great friend to an older bird but i'm not sure how well i'd be able to bond with it the way i'd like to without having it imprinted as a youngster, basically I'd love to have a bird fill my need for a dog in the sense that they're both pack animals and highly social from what I understand(they seek out companionship in the same way a dog might?) and those are my needs. any idea if this will work or have any tips? older males or females easier to bond with?

kian raissian they can live up to 25-30 years old but the average lifespan as pet is 15-20 :) so those 30 year old tiels are not very common, but it's possible. kinda like how people can live over 100 years old but after all not many make it.

Loved this video Robin. The clapping sound made me laugh! Just a word about breeders as you mention. You are 100% correct. I got mine from a breeder of birds and white German Shepherds. I bought this little runt out of about 100 flying around in the walk in cage, who was bald from the others picking on him so much yanking out his head feathers. He was aggressive and untrusting at home. But after about 3 months of slowly befriending, and feeding treats through the cage, whistling, calling him pretty bird, he got better. Long story short, after 1 year, he would fly to me on command, sit on my shoulder at breakfast for bagel edges, and was gentle enough to walk on my forehead when I lay down and groomed my eyelashes. They are birds of personality, I just love them. But where you get one DOES matter.

Wow, amazing! I find it fascinating how these birds knowingly or unknowingly can master musical abilities! Singing in tune, in rhythm, and even understanding/mimicking elements of percussion by clapping its beak.

Came across Nanners while finding a video for my cockatiel Harley. He LOVED it. He taught himself the Andy of Mayberry due to me watching it every day. I went into the bathroom with no windows with him during a bad hurricane. I was a little nervous hoping my roof stayed on. The wind stopped for a short second bracing for the worst part. When the wind started again Harley said " uh oh" I laughed so hard I didn't even think about what was going on outside. I love this little bird. I rescued him about 17 years ago. These are loving birds. So glad I have him.Thanks for sharing.
