I switched pebbles cage for a bigger one for maybe a week she was absolutely miserable. He may be so used to that cage, hopefully where he gets to nest from now on he can just use that cage just for sleeping hes very confused not staring through all the cage bars at u 2. His wings open All the way without banging into something poor turkey!!! At least he's starting his new life now!!!!

OMB!! Hi Kelly! I've missed you guys! He's in quarantine in a smaller cage at the moment until test results come back. His vet appointment went well today! He's really scared of hands. It's going to take time for this turkey to build trust and confidence. He's going to be ok!

Oscar must be such a patient soul (I'm not so patient), being locked up in that hell hole of an extremely small dark cage, and no plucking and not screaming at everyone to leave him alone. I can't even imagine not being able to spread out my wings, not being able to play, or not being able to walk around to give my feet a break for 30 years. one of my rescue birds that was in similar, but worse conditions for a decade fits the exact description of "learned helplessness" I haven't seen this cocky in enough detail to know if it's the same, but at a glance that would be my guess as to why so calm. Learned helplessness was experimented on with dogs that were given electric shocks & unable to escape them. Eventually they stopped trying to escape & just submitted to the torture without resistance. My little one lets people do anything to her, then gets back into her cage & just rocks from the distress she's been feeling (well actually she doesn't do that much anymore, she feels safe with me, so she squarks at me & bites me if she doesn't like what I'm doing, which is GREAT! It means she's finally feeling safe enough to assert herself & make choices as to what she wants :)))

I rescued a moulaccan from a pet store. He also had been cage bound. We opened his door and after a few hours, we went to bed. (There was nothing he could get into). He had been on a diet of white bread and peanuts in the shell. Next morning I came down to check on how he’d managed during the night, only to find him sitting on the arm of a captain oak chair, eating breakfast with my 7 yr old! She’s quite the bird person from day one. All birds love her!……he was so happy to be out of his cage, we never shut his door again! I had a parrot book, so I called the author…he gave me a diet for him. Mostly beans….green beans, kidney beans etc, which after starving himself for 4 days, he finally decided it wasn’t that horrible. I froze food in ice cube tray. The bird Dr told me he would die on bread and peanuts. He urned out to be a beautiful bird. Very quiet and so gentle.

my rehab African Grey was my dad’s, I remember how ashamed I felt when I realized I grew up next to a neglected helpless being in an empty cage that is locked up by wire and rusty locks that I literally had to cut with a fishing hook cutter to take him to the doctor, I have my own trauma too and now I realize we had shared a bond because we both grew up in an unfortunate situation. it’s so heart breaking but hey let’s think about how much great things he gonna experience from now on, he’s gonna be the happiest gentleman. my heart is with him. sending love and healing energy to him! good boy.

another thing, there’s no shame in changing a neglected animal life, there’s a lot of shame in keeping them that way because that’s “their comfort zone” (as you should, because it’s horrible, but we all make mistakes...) because it isn’t. it’s just easier to not do this work, I know, but it is important.

I lived in Vietnam for a few months, and the owners of the house where I rented a room also had a Cockatoo. Her name was Rio and she was simply gorgeous, but they kept her in suuuch a small cage and they never played with her! She was always screaming and hitting the cage and she felt soo lonely :( my heart was breaking for her... I lived there for 3 months and I tried my best to put her out of the cage and play with her for a few hours every day. We would listen to music and she would come and kiss me and dance and bounce her head to the music :( I didn't know what to do to rescue or save her. She was an accessory for the owners there. They simply couldn't care less about her. I really wish I can go back there one day and if they still have her find a way to rescue her and rehome her with a loving family :(

Unfortunately, most would N0T survive! M0ST DIE, when let loose &/or they accidentally get out. They do not have skills to survive on their own, after being hatched, hand raised/fed, etc. They may live for a few days/weeks, but eventually become predator's prey, because they do not know how to defend, &/or how to get away.

These birds cannot survive without the care for a human. They've been bred in captivity and alot of natural enemies around here. They basically have no ability to find food in these unknown habitats. If they're taught to stay with you on the outside then it'd be okay to let them go around nearby. My parakeets are free to go around in my house, except for Kitchen and bathroom. They have their cage and learned to open and close the cage door on their own. Also they give a poop about me putting a blanket ober them for sleep time, they rather not have it and just sleep on their own. They are actually pretty adapt to go in the cage around 10pm on their own.

I hope that you gave this parrot what was the only bit of care he ever had before learning that he is very sick. I'm sure you did. Thank you very much for doing what you are doing. Parrots do not belong in cages. They are wild animals deprived of their needs in even the best situations of captivity. We need to shame and end breeders!!! And stores like PETCO. And, we need to change the laws and regulations so that it is specifically described what an owner must be equipped to care for adopted wild parrots.

I have to be some what agreeable with this. I have an Umbrella Cockatoo Bianca. I adopted him from my dad when he was 6 most old...I immediately fell for him! He has a good a varied diet 2 nice big cages..He moved in with my longterm boyfriend now husband in 2002 who also loves him!..but has been a feather picker not matter how hard I have tried to prevent that..He is 31 years old. Thinks he is a girl but he is a he..lol! * Right now I cant afford alot of toys & have had trouble keeping evetthing clean& spotless because I became very ill in 2019 & 2020 thru to now. He gets full check ups 2 x a year because of his picking & at one point high yeast issues..We have been putting apple cider vinegar in his water on & off for years to keep his system healthy and lowered his yeast issues. He has bitten us and sent me a few times to the ER. But that can be exppected with exotic creatures. I am just saying here..that considering Oscar looks well groomed, his weight looks good, his cage is clean...I am wondering who claimed he never got out of his cage?? Maybe I missed that conversation! It seems like the owner did do her best with what her circumstances..My Bianca would have plucked all his feathers & injured himself if he was stuck in his even for 2 full days & nights in his 6' × 30" x 3'1/2" cage.. And his night time cage is also large in my office/ his bedroom...

In fact we call the room that he’s in “ The Parrot Room.” I hope Oscar has a long and happy life. Please the next time you have a situation like that, , never stick something in their cage ( I could see that you realized that). Birds are very territorial when it comes to their cage.Using the leather glove that covers your arm towards your elbow was actually your best option. Slowly and quietly hold your hand steady right at the door opening and let him come to you as you use words like “step up.” Continue until you have success. Best of luck to you all.

I have an Amazon , 2 conures , 2 cockatiels, 3 parakeets . All rescues. You need alot of dedication , time , hard work and yes, they will bite . They all get free flight day (not all together) . It took a year to get one on my shoulder , now I wake up to him climbing up my bed in the mornings . BIRDS ARE VERY SMART and become very attached to their human .

This is one of the best rescues from an owner who mistreated this bird with no attention and a cage too small for it. This poor bird deserved better than that bad owner who has no business to own it.

This is exactly the same set up that happened to my rescue “Mad Max” I’ve had him for a year now , he was in a very small cage, some guy that owned him said he was to load and squawking all the time , the guy put max outside and when he would get vocal the guy would hose him with a garden hose, ( ya I’m still looking for this idiot!) I couldn’t get my hand in the cage to feed and clean , I got a rally large cage cage for him , we have made so much progress, , but he still likes being inside, instead of out I have a feeling he feels more secure, this week we learned how to play peek a boo from him playing inside a cardboard box , we have just started our life long journey!

Sweet baby!! I have a Cockatoo who last year had no feathers. The previous owners fed him Doritos because they said "he liked them"🤦‍♀️. My friend paid $100 to get him, showed him what love is and put him on a proper diet. He spends time with me as well. He will be here full time starting Sunday.

I’m so excited to have found this channel. It just popped up and so I subscribed. I’m 54 and I’ve had Parrots since I was 13. I have just 1 bird. A Yellow Naped Amazon. She’s an excellent talker and never yells, however she does sing show tunes and other songs. I would love to get another bird. I think it would be fun and I would love to possibly adopt another bird.

I feel absolutely guilty when i didnt have my cockatiels out ALL DAY and only for a couple hours! They LIVE WITH US as PART OF OUR FAMILY. Cages are BEDROOMS, *NOT HOUSES OR HOMES* ... Thats just my opinion ❤ glad the lil guy has some people to show him love and earn his trust. I recently made a huge breakthrough with one of my cockatiels who was traumatized due to a rehoming situation and lost all trust in humans.. As of recent, she has started allowing us to give her scratches and steps up ❤ it took almost exactly 1 year & ITS SO *WORTH IT* !!!

Oh my goodness that poor bird! This reminds me so much of my U2 when I got him; tiny cage, one perch, crappy diet, no toys, he lived with 2 heavy chain smokers, his cage was infested with maggots. It took about a year of work to get him to the point where he was comfortable with me, being handled and playing with toys. He had been hand fed so it was a case of him remembering what people are about ❤️ he lived with me for only 5 years before passing away of lung cancer

@@SaveaParrot it was hard, he had lived with his first home for 6 years, I don't know much about his life then except that he lived in a tiny round cage, his second home "upgraded" him to a slightly larger square cage similar to this one. His cage was tucked behind two couches in the corner of the living room, beside the woman of the house who sat directly next to him and smoked, she spent 99% of her day and night there next to him, tv always on. I truly believe the only thing that kept him part way sane was the tv, he had no toys to play with. He had no balance, no sense of self, had no idea how to play, it was heart breaking. I had him for the least amount of time, but I know he had the best 5 years of his life. He came to college with me, I brought him to my vet tech classes to teach other students about proper parrot care, he got fresh food every day, as many toys as he could ever want. It was a long, hard road to recovery, but im sure just like Goonie, Liberty will get there in time. He doesn't know it yet, but his life is only going to get better from now on

I have a cockatoo that my neighbor badly abused. First she said he was 17 and then said he was 30. He bit me for 5 months before realizing I would not hurt him. We have been dancing, playing games and snuggling for two month. But this morning I wore the wrong article of clothing. I cannot wear my p.j.s, crocks, bandana on my hair or very thin clothing. This morning was cold and I left my cape on. It set him off and he bit my hand deep. His hatred of his former owner run deep. 3 hrs later I came back and he wants me to pick him up. I am trying my best not to be afraid to handle him. I love him dearly.

I rescued a Timneh a couple of years ago when his owner could no longer look after him. He too had been confined for 30 years in a cage with just one toy and fed almost exclusively sunflower seeds. He'd never been touched or handled. He was terrified when I caught him to take him home. I put him on the top of his cage with perches, toys, some decent food and water, but left the door of the cage open so he could go in, but he didn't. Now he goes in and out of his cage as he wishes. He has the run of the house, but seems to prefer chilling on the top of his cage or chewing the cardboard I put around the bottom of his cage to catch the poop. He now comes over for a head scratch, takes treats nicely from my fingers without biting and talks, dances and whistles all the time. His new life has finally begun. Murderers don't get 30 years in solitary confinement, so why should a bird?

A local veterinarian has a large parrot that has never been out of his cage. The practice is well over 30 years old. I was very surprised. I had been contracted to photograph their practice. When we got to the bird, I was only allowed to photograph him through the bars because they said no one had ever taken him out of the cage and they didn’t know how he would react. Made me wonder how they provided medical care for him. The cage was a much tighter fit for that bird than the one in this video. The bird is probably still there.

April, I didn't realize you had this separate channel until now. Subscribed, of course. Oscar looks surprisingly good considering what he's been through, but it won't surprise me if he has medical problems, especially considering his terrible diet. It's late now, but I will check in tomorrow and donate towards his vet bill. I think he'll be a fighter like Miss VC.

Hello! Yes! I have a new channel along with Parrot Playhouse. I kept getting penalized for uploading parrot rescue videos on Parrot Playhouse so I had to separate it all. I'm not happy about it but was left with no choice. Sadly the bloodwork doesn't look good for Oscar who is now called Liberty. We are still waiting for the PDD labs. He's a very sick kid. I just hope he can enjoy at least a few years of peace and happiness.

Thank you for loving these beautiful angles. For first time owners please DON'T shop at petstores please adopt there are many places. They aren't toys, they will be family, treat them as such and just a side note if your home is one of chaos and fighting and family members don't get along a lot of loud shouting and noises probably getting a bird of any type is not helping them I say that not to hurt anybody's feelings but it is true if you feel trapped and abused in your own household because of your family please don't get a bird they have real feelings they're super smart and when they get depressed it certainly increases their chance of death and self-destruction on another note if you do have a stable home where there is lots of love and your heart is to have a bird please rescue please do research go online there are many training shows in particularly one I love it's called bird tricks they show you how to train your bird and many more. I'm sending my love to everybody who has a heart for these animals and a special shout out to The rescuers of Oscar

I would love to rescue him. Has he been rescued? I just rescued a 20 year old CAG and he is the sweetest bird I’ve ever had. Usually CAGs are only bonded to one person but he will let anyone hold him. His previous owner had him since he was an egg and she was afraid of him so they were never able to bond. Believe me, these creatures need affection and love. Instantly he was drawn to me bc I wasn’t afraid of his beak. You have to not be afraid of them to bond with them. Now he’s my companion for life he comes to work with me every day. My heart breaks for this sweet creature. He will also live another 30 years if he lives out his whole lifespan. They are lifelong companions.

Poor fella! Thats just cruelty and breaks my heart! Parrots live very long lives and abuse creates damaged birds that need care for life. Don’t take on a parrot unless you’re willing to be regimented and dedicated. That poor bird lived 30 years in that cage. Human beings truly are the cruelest of the animal kingdom. I am regularly disgusted by unfeeling and uncaring human beings. Pets deserve so much better than that. My pets are family...they give me SO MUCH!

She already had a houseful of birds - about a dozen, I think. It's an incredible commitment to make, to take care of even one damaged bird for the rest of its potentially long life. It's expensive, noisy, exhausting, and takes an honorable, responsible person to make such a commitment. I, too, hope Oscar will have a loving home and time to enjoy it.
