Hi. If you don’t mind, I will ramble a bit. I like belt and suspenders construction. At North Sails in 1986/87 we were making mainsails for two Volvo racing boats, “UBS, or Merit” and “UBF”. We would sit at our “stumps”, yes, massive tree stumps and hand stitch heavy Kevlar straps to the headboards of these boats. We called them, “Rainbows”. Carbon fiber had yet to be invented. Securing the aluminum headboards to the head of the sail took time. First they were machine sewn. Then, we hand sewed these straps at right angles, hence the “ Rainbow”. The awl that we pounded in with our mallets to make holes for needle and thread was hot to the touch after just one row. I loved it. I thought, “Boy, these guys will be safe down in the Southern Ocean”. At least one boat tore the headboard right out of the sail. I like the belt and suspenders approach.

That cockpit is really coming together nicely. They way you guys sat so comfortably while chatting safely ensconced in that secure coaming-cocoon speaks volumes to your pure design instinct. It will be great to see how this transfers to actual on-water utility. It just looks right too! Cheers, from SY Miss Foxy in Singapore .

8:30 Great thinking! When you are immersed in fiberglass layers, exhausted and overworked, think about arriving in Fatu Hiva, eating sashimi and drinking pisco sours on that very cockpit, with the afternoon sun gently warming the air, and nothing to do but enjoying life, for I am absolutely certain the payoff will be magnificent. So, meanwhile fiberglass the fuck out of that boat my friend!

What a great episode guys. I watch each episode with great interest and fascination at your skills in video editing and boat building. Matt your attention to detail and logical way of approaching each new challenge is inspiring. This inspiration carries over to all the jobs I take on in the yard, building sheds, restoring the caravan and adding to the mountains of veggie beds I build with corrugated iron (86cm high x 3.2m long), living so close to the Coral Sea there is only sand underfoot.

Came for the pilot house design since thinking of doing something in that direction on a smaller boat (some day). …stayed for the craftmanship and atmosphere. 😊 …and now R2AK, exciting contraptions, rowercruiser and good looking Louise. My feelgood-o-meter broke down completely. Guess I have to emigrate to Port Townsend, seems as if most things can be fixed by someone in the surroundings over there! Keep up the good work! 👍

Hey Matt! Am I the only guy that noticed you had a red star on the coaming cover and when asked you said cause it’s the starboard side. Red is port. Green is starboard. Lol. Maybe it was a trick to see who was paying attention ? I did. My trick is always using the number of letters in port are less then starboard and red has fewer letters then green. Less letters go together. 😉🤓 cheers. Doug

When you explained the reason for the star, I got to think about where the word starboard originated from. It came from the old Viking ships. They had like a steering oar attached to one side of the stern. This is called “styrebord” in Norwegian, directly translated, this means steering board. That’s way they called this “styrbord” in Norwegian, and this has become starboard in English. To protect the steering board, the usually docked with the other side so it wouldn’t be damaged in contact with the dock. That is why the other side got the name Portside, it was the side facing the port.

The Portuguese used the bombordo(port) and estibordo(Starboard). Bombordo(port) related to the way you kept the african coast on your left as you sailed south. Estibordo was the opposite. SAGRES was the first Maritime school , started somewhere in the 1200's
