Mark, you are an oasis of musical sanity in an era when popular/light (give it a name) music has, in most cases, ceased to be music. Thank you, for your taste and for your God-given talent. Thank you - or did I already say that?

Always such a great way to spend time listening to you play. Your handling of substitutions is an absolute masterclass every time that never fails to impress. Thank you.

Just when I thought it doesn’t get any better than his theatre organ works, he plays flawlessly in the piano in the style of the giants of yesteryear … His playing is a living testament of music history

Thank you, Mark, for another sterling performance. I love hearing you in person at the Senate Theater in Detroit and, also, here on KZbin. Bravo! PayPal on its way.

Wow! I've seen this piano on videos from my friend Ben Helton who has recorded it on occasion but this is the first time I'm hearing it with studio quality sound! Awesome playing!

A fine instrument for a truly gifted musician who really "feels" the music he plays . Bless you and yours, Mark ❤

Listened to the entire program. Sublime. 👏Wonderful piano but of course they don't play themselves. Know and love every song. Thanks for your generosity Mark. I'll send this to friends.

Funny me asking because as many times I've been around that piano, I should know this but don't. Being that this is a Duo-Art reproducing piano which plays rolls and exactly duplicates all the motions and dynamics of a player, can this piano capture your playing to a roll as you play so that it can be played back later? A few years ago Cletus showed me a modern Yamaha grand at the showroom which you've probably seen too that can digitally capture and playback similar to Uniflex which is a different technology to this 1927 piano but it was never made clear to me what the term "reproducing" exactly meant on these older instruments. Your playing is lovely as ever and your collection of music contained to memory is amazing. When it comes to piano and this music genre, both you and Michael Davis just knock my socks off. Two incredibly gifted musicians.

Actually, this piano uses the Ampico reproducing mechanism as Mason and Hamlin was under the Ampico family of piano manufacturers. Steinway would have been the Duo-Art equivalent. The reproducing term simply means that the player can "reproduce" the dynamics and pedaling of the pianist instead of only playing the notes at a single volume level. Modern day players such as the one that Cletus showed you (Yamaha's Disklavier system) have a built in recording strip under the keys which tracks which notes are being played and how loud they are. This is synthesized into a midi file which can be played back and can even be altered. These true reproducing pianos do not have this ability as they have no way to track the motion of the keys and convert that into a perforated roll. Hopefully this helps.

Nice! Is that the straight-strung Mason & Hamlin? Does it sound different than a modern grand?
@TheAmpico Жыл бұрын
This is a traditional over-strung piano. Straight stringing was largely phased out by the 1880s. As a 9' concert grand, it is longer than a typical grand, but 9' is still the "normal" concert grand size that Mason and Hamlin, Steinway, and many others still use today. Much of the sound is comparable to modern grands. This is still a quite modern scale design. If I remember correctly, M&H used the CC2 scale design that this piano has up until the 1960s, maybe even later. The piano is wonderfully rich and warm. It has a fabulously present bass without being overpowering. It's truly a wonderful piano to hear and play.

Good workshop - plus ! now minus - you play like both - no atmosphere, no mood, always the some decorations- guantity, not quality - I would leave after a few minutes - the some thing over and over and over again. You are rancing against yourself - Start thinging.I feel sorry for those who have to listen all evening. YOU PLAY TO MUCH- but technique very good !
