Great episode! It enticed my interest in Mantua, Isabella D'Este, Antico and more. I love seeing the catalog entry with the details of the purchasing of the Hercules sculpture. Great quality, great content, and great presentation. Congratulations Giulio!

That Titian portrait of Isabella d'Este is like her quite something. Which is also portrayed brilliantly in Sheila Hales unequalled book on Titian and Venice . Really interesting presentation. Thank You Giulio from wuthering West Yorkshire.

Probably Mantua's (Mantova) greatest claim to fame is that it was the birthplace of the greatest of ancient Roman poets Virgil, author of the "Aeneid."In the Middle Ages he became mythologised and considered a wizard and of course appears in Dante"s "Inferno" as Dante'sguide through Hell.

Charming! Looking forward to meeting you one of these days. (I live down the street, between Frick & Breuer.) Lynne Lawner, author of "Lives of the Courtesans: Portraits of the Renaissance", & a book on commedia dell'arte & the visual arts. Enough about me. Loved the Bertoldo show & love Antico. You presented everything so succinctly & well. Thank you!

yep that's her! Isabella d'Este married Francesco Gonzaga, the Lord of Mantua. and Lucrezia Borgia married Isabella's brother so they were sisters in law... I am from Mantova, you can't imagine how happy I am to see my city in a Frick video! and I totally have to read the book Rinascimento privato (Private Renaissance), it's on my to be read list ...

Apparently, Isabella d'Este did not share the same belief. Titian painted two portraits of her. Isabella was displeased with the first portrait by Titian, showing Isabella's actual age (mid-50s). She requested a second portrait by Titian, showing her as a woman in her 20s. She was very pleased with the second version.
