Oh please, please keep this series going! This is the only good thing to have come out of isolation! And this episode is particularly interesting--nothing like a little mystery. :)

Cocktails with a Curator has hit on a fabulous approach to attract us to listen to their focus on a single painting at a time. Xavier Salomon has for me such a pleasure to listen to as one of the curators for the wonderful Frick Collection.

Truth is the daughter of time. It’s deeply satisfying to think that this demure and pensive lady, with her rather wistful expression, at last has her true name and biography restored to her. Her life as such was brief and unremarkable, yet she inspired this minor masterpiece and it’s nice we get to pay her our respects, so many years after she died and was all but forgotten.

Dr. Salomon this was so interesting! Thank you so much for continuing this series, and many kudos to Eloise! So much for us all to learn behind the scenes of the Frick, so much work by so many knowledgeable people. Reminds me of detective work ! So pleased to see you again (even without the little black kitten) this is my Friday treat.

Fascinating insight into art historical research within the museum context. I particularly like the way Xavier explains what is unknown rather than making assumptions. This is made crystal clear with the Beechey portrait but has been a theme throughout other presentations.

Rapture! You have not entirely abandoned us! You’ve become a rarity for me - an uncle far younger than I! TRAVELS WITH MY AUNT is entirely reworked in my mind and with a cocktail happily in hand, I land in New York with you, and the unimaginable joy of being invited to share in the new and old discoveries which fly us o’er the world in fabulous discussion. Your good health, my dear Sir.

Great episode - it’s amazing how many work of art are hidden from our eye just because space in the main collections is limited. Beautiful portrait and little mystery story is highly intriguing. Cocktails with a Curator by Solomon is the most cherished program I encounter. Lockdown brought to us this style from different art collection and Frick museum does it better than anyone - edgy personalities are shining through narration every time.

Another wonderful video, Dr Salomon. Thank you!! Let me say, though, that I have trouble understanding why the portrait of Elizabeth Sophia was ever thought to be by Hoppner: the painting style is nothing like Hoppner's. Anybody who doesn't believe this need only make a copy (however imperfect) of a portrait head by Hoppner and the head of this Beechey. Van Aken possibly painted the drapery-apropos of which, the unfinished Haydn portrait was probably waiting for the drapery painter to begin, but he didn't.

Wondering if this is new information re the painting: www.npg.org.uk/collections/search/person/mp85513/elizabeth-sophia-baillie-nee-de-visme Denise Taylor 06 November 2020, 03:31 The sketch is of Elizabeth Sophia Devisme daughter of David Devisme and Phillippa Devisme (nee Baillie). Phillippa being the daughter of Captain Thomas Baillie , he being associated with Greenwich Hospital and Trial. Elizabeth Sophia Devisme married John Baillie (storekeeper office or Ordinance at Chatham) The citation below will give you the information you are seeking regarding the authenticity of the sketch. The painting itself was left in the will of Phillippa Devisme, (Elizabeth Sophia's mother) to her friend, Mrs. Clarke along with other valuable items.

I might be asking if the two children had an older brother who died. Before going with the possibility of a beggar child entering the precinct of a great house. At this time there was an array of defense designed to prevent such an encounter. The phrase ' the haha is to keep the cattle off the lawns' comes from period. And the cattle reference is to human beings not sheep or cow's. Why the coin, to pay the boatman.

Beechey better than Romney. Is the Romney unfinished? The clothing looks unfinished unlike the Beechey.
