Mark Kermode reviews Coco. Miguel wants to break free of his family’s ban on music and become a famous singer, like his hero Ernesto de la Cruz. When he finds himself in the land of the dead, he sees a chance to get his family’s blessing - even if it’s from a great-great-grandfather who’s been dead for years.
Please tell us what you think of the film -- or Mark’s review of the film - below. We love to include your views on the show every Friday.

TheDreamerExtreme - I’m just back from seeing it and I DEFINITELY wasn’t crying. Why would I be crying ? At 55 I’m far too cynical for that. It was just a bit of grit in my eye ... that’s all.

I think one of the biggest regrets of my life is not seeing this film in the cinema when I could've easily gone. I love this film from the bottom of my heart. As someone who gave up music more and more as other things in my life came up the release I feel watching this film just takes me to another realm, very much like in the film. Also, it's even better in Spanish.

It is! Even if there are still some tiny problems a mexican can cherry pick. For instance: a) you never refer to an idol just for his/her family name but their full name (it’s never “Infante” or “De la Cruz”, but “Pedro Infante” or “Ernesto de la Cruz”), and b) the addressing of “Don” is misused and mistranslated from Italian costume in using it to the family name; in México you use it on the first name (it’s never “don Hidalgo” but “el señor Hidalgo”, or maybe “don Juan Hidalgo”). But as I say, I’m cherry picking. Oh, and in México the final credits song is a mariachi version and it was SO much more emotional :’)

Movie destroyed me, my mother lost her father after a long period with dementia and the way they portrayed it in this film is so realistic. Those few lucid moments meant so much in the end and the last few scenes in this movie I just couldn't stop crying. Beautiful film.

AMAZING film (a few nitpicks aside.) Pixar's best since Inside Out and really only the second Pixar 2010's film (after IO) to compete with the best of Pixar's pre 2010's work ( I say that as a die hard Pixar fan.) Go and see it NOW.

I thought it was delightful, even though it does recycle a lot of Pixar story beats like surprise heel turns. I actually felt like Coco was a mix of Footloose and Brave with some Up sprinkled in and that's because that's what Coco essentially is.

not quite on the same level as Toy Story or Inside Out but it's certainly up there with some of Pixar's most brilliant works. Pixar strike again in being the masters of making movies that can speak to all ages on some level.

Coco - 7.5/10 It took quite a while for this film to really grab me which is rare for a Pixar film. As an ignorant Englishman I couldn't help but feel a sense of detachment from the Mexican culture that is depicted here. Luckily though, Pixar manage to make it accessible for everyone and as the story develops, the themes become more universal and relatable. A new Pixar film always brings new ideas and a new world to explore. They have a great knack of exploring their concepts and filling the screen with witty, subtle and visual gags. I didn't feel the same sense of fun and play with the Land of the Dead. There were some great ideas and it was visually stunning, but i didn't feel like they explored it to its full potential. Pixar films usually destroy me emotionally and whilst I did get 'something' in my eye, it didn't reduce me to tears in the same way that Inside Out, Toy Story 3 and Up did. A slight disappointment by Pixars insanely high standards.

Arlo Steiner zootopia was one of the most poignant political movies I've seen in years... that it was a kid's animation about a "Wiley Fox" and a "lovable bunny" only adds to the credit... Not a perfect film, but definitely a winner

So I watched Coco with sky-high expectations. I found it to be a visually engaging, occasionally funny but ultimately forgettable spectacle that left no lasting impression aside from a lingering sense that I was missing something. Rewatching it today I realized what. All story is thoroughly nonsensical with major plotholes, pointless plot-twists and contrived conflicts that could be easily resolved if any of the characters acted with any consistency. It's also loses itself in the final and, like Up, relies to much of an evil-for-no-purpose-other-than-being-evil villain nor does it ever explain why Hector, the second lead, left is family to begin with which is the entire point of the story.
@jpaxonreyes
@jpaxonreyes 4 жыл бұрын
What? The villain wasn't evil for no reason. He had to prevent Miguel from returning because his secret was exposed. De la Cruz didn't want to risk the truth getting out that he killed his partner and stole the songs from him.
