Happy days! I remember them well. I was a CPO artificer on Bacchante, one of the few ships undamaged in the conflict, but we had some very close run ins, especially with the converted trawler Baldur. Baldur was much more heavily built than the other gunboats with acutely angled port and stbd quarters, which she would attempt to swing in to the side of the thin skinned frigates. I was ship's photographer, and spent most of the daylight hours on the upper deck (January and February in Arctic waters - long johns, trousers and over trousers) I have photos of how close Baldur's stern was at times - about 2 feet away. I also have, as far as I know, the only photo of Scylla colliding with Odinn, about a quarter mile off our stbd beam. This was Scylla going alongside and ahead of Odinn, then turning to port, pushing Odinn around. At the moment of collision there was a loud cheer from the Scylla's crew, and black smoke from Scylla as she either went astern or suddenly stopped engines. Very exciting to watch! For a couple of weeks we had the BBC Tonight team on board, presenter David Lomax. Although they were wardroom vitalled, they soon migrated to the after CPO's mess to drink, hang out, and swing the lantern. They had some interesting stories to tell, and encouraged us to make up a song on the cod war based on a naval ditty. My input to the song was "There is a moral to this story, it is plain to sea - all politicians should be sent to sea." It was broadcast whilst we were still at sea, the day Lord George Brown resigned from the Labour Party. ("I didn't leave Labour - Labour left me") There is a video of this around somewhere, and it gives the British side, not the Icelandic side like this one. (NB, for the first 3 days at sea, we never saw them, they were all seasick) dit: I should add - the few winter months spent in Arctic waters during the 3rd cod war gave me a HUGE respect for deep sea fishermen! Bitter cold, tossed around in heavy seas in ships a fraction of the size of a Leander, a week to get on station and a week back. I don't complain about the price of fish now (yes I do know that much of it is farmed these days)

I knew that a dispute over fishing had taken place between the two countries, but never seen any footage of it. Amazing. Those British captains pretty hardcore. I read some book yrs ago about the Cold War at sea & how the Royal Navy was freaking out the Americans because they weren't shy about going face to face with the Russians, up close. Just something I remember reading, not claiming to be an expert on it...those Leanders were beautiful ships.

What you cannot see is that even though it was bloody freezing outside below minus 30 at times we were all very suntanned as we had gone up there from being out the Med all the summer!! Great times. Way more fun than Uni would have been.

Served on HMS Yarmouth in the " Cod War " we we're know as "Rubber Duck "! And " Bites Yer Legs " during that time. Brilliant little ship ( Rothesay class frigate ). We hit the Baldur rather hard and lost part of our bow - but we did NOT let them cut any nets whilst we were on patrol. Best wishes and regards to any old matelots that were in the Cod War.

As a serving member of the Royal Navy, I have served on two T42's, two T23's and a T45 something has become clear when reading the comments section. The Leander's, sadly long gone by the time I joined in 2003 (Sprog I know), are one of those rare classes of vessel that engender deep affection among those that have served in them. To a certain degree those that served on T42's have the same sort of thing though possibly not as strong. The only other class that seems to have engendered this feeling are the T22's. Another class of ship that have gone to the dockyard in the sky. I have never served on one, but those that have always remember them with fondness.

Interesting to see HMS Leander (1963) and Naid (1965) both offered to RNZN in 1981 after the Nott defence cuts as alternatives to HMS Bachantee and HMS Dido. Orginally Naid was fitted with GWS2O pure optical Seacat, but after its Ikara conversion here it has a clear GWS22 Seacat fire control probably a rewired conversion of its orginal MRS/mod 1 4.5 gun control. It is claimed the Rothesay seacat control was upgraded from GWs20 to GWS22 but the director hood remains the GW20.

I believe they used the older type 12s for the railway lines [welded on to the stern] and 500 tons of concrete in the bows. Gunbopats knew how fragile Leanders were so holing them was easy and commonly they would run up over the stern using their reinforced bows. Didn't work so well with railway lines welded to her stern and underwater...

When you fight dirty (this case the UK) against a smaller opponent and then cry about it trying to justify your actions by lying to the public and your allies,,,, We milked every drop out of NATO's fear of the Russians during those fights. The crew of those 8 boats have my deepest respect. They were fighting for their country's survival. Almost 90% of their export industry was at risk. Any country would fight to the death for such a cause. Gross overfishing in their own and international waters, and lack of governance of the British fishing fleet was the cause the British fishermen had to fish around Iceland. They had already ruined other fishing grounds, and was going to ruin this one as well. That's why the Icelanders fought so hard. I read the comments from the crew members of British navy ships, and feel sick by the casual and nonchalant attitude towards this. Even calling it fun. They had no business being there. This cause is the single biggest reason Iceland and Norway is not a member of the EU. To protect their own fishing rights.

Both the RN and Icelandic coastguard seem mainly interested in protecting the interests of their fisherman to engage in unlimted predatory fishing, so theirs little sense and conservation involved. Both sides are also engaged in protecting great naval power interests and its is a form of warfare. The Royal Navy has taken its fleet to sea, immediately a Grimsby trawler was shot up with 57mm . The RN fleet is off Iceland without informing the Foreign Secretary or PM and the British Government considers the Iceland Government and its coastguard Communist agents supporting the Soviet Navy and keen for a reason to close the USN Navy Orion P3 base at Redjivirk.
@jongunnara8 жыл бұрын
Supporting the Soviet Navy!!!??? What were they smoking? Iceland was, and is, a core NATO member. Anything else would be pure madness, considering that the only shape of defence Iceland has was and is these gunboats. This whole Cod War thing was a disgrace for Britain! Read about it on Wikipedia and become enlightened.
@frederickmiles3278 жыл бұрын
Jongunnara.You must be well supplied with that Russian vodka. Have a look at the You tube clip 'History of the Cod War Pt 3' 0.00- 3.00 and the first minute you will see a British Cabinet Minister denouncing the Icelandic Cabinet Ministers as Communist, and desiring to take Iceland out of Nato and close the US Navy Orion base at Redjivick. The 2nd and 3rd Cod wars are generally seen as part of the Cold War and the loss of up to 20 Royal Navy frigates from operational use while they were repaired after being rammed by Icelandic gunboats significantly weakened the British Navy ability to patrol and protect the Greenlnd- Iceland -UK gap from Soviet submarine penetration. One would assume that both the Iceandic coastguard and the Argentine Navy in 1982 had considerable Soviet intelligence and GRU in finding British ships and apparently in setting up the land based Exocet adaption that hit HMS Glamorgan withj an Exocet ( Moore/ Thatcher Pt 1 bk published 2015). Argentine has long cooperated closely with the Russians over trade and other matters
@jonakason44518 жыл бұрын
I feel obliged to encourage you to read some history books and not to rely on what British Cabinet Ministers have said at any given moment. That the British government made such allegations was of course nothing short of outrageous and was something invented solely to justify the British aggression towards the Icelandic Coastguard which was in its full right and duty to defend Icelandic territory and natural resources. Had the Icelandic government been involved with the Soviets our friends and allies in NATO would have known everything about it and of course not tolerated such a thing. You are walking in the darkness of a long forgotten smoke cloud created by your own government.. By far not the first or the last time your government has laid smoke carpets to cover an unpleasant truth or to disguise their real intentions. This one is actually a gold medal example of that, but I want to remind you of another one; when Gordon Brown invoked terrorist law on the Icelandic government in 2008, after the collapse of the banks. Iceland was placed on a list with al Quaeda and Taliban. You might say these were political blunders made in the heat of the moment, but since then the British have had to eat their own words and their actions were condemned among civilized countries. The worst part is that it seems to me that we are looking at a pattern here. Do you see it? As for the claim that the RN frigates were rammed by the Icelandic coastguard; do you seriously believe that? No captain in his right mind would do such a thing, it would be like beating a tank with a bucket. All the captains of the coastguard were and still are men in their right minds, I can assure you of that. I have respect for the Royal Navy, but please don't try to make a fictional cause of the cod wars and justify the actions of UK. Everybody knows how this ended and why. Well, at least we won these "wars" and protected our territory even when faced with the Royal Navy. Just like we sent you out of EURO 2016. Learn your lessons, Englishmen. Have a nice day.

What history is that? certainly not what actual history records. These incidents occurred due to unilateral actions taken by Iceland to claim ever increasing amounts of international waters and arresting or causing damage to vessels in international waters. The Royal Navy and British Government acted in defence of vessels engaged in international waters unilaterally claimed by Iceland, the aggressor throughout was Iceland claiming international waters and attempting to enforce it's claim with intimidation and ultimately force. In relation to the banking collapse the Icelandic Government again acted unilaterally to seize and ultimately steal the savings of, among others, British citizens. It's all very well being nationalistic but as you said "I feel obliged to encourage you to read some history books..."

Enter Icelandic waters expect the Icelandic to respond ,I don't have much sympathy for fishermen who took risk in the waters.This was unnecessary bolstering by the British government and shameful behaviour by the navy for protecting the vessels that were illegally in Icelandic waters.The British had other vast waters to fish but no they had to take the piss.............Well done Iceland!!!!

just teasing. nothing more could have occurred between NATO allies. c’mon, all u sailors from that era, should have fought „wars” on other waters, and over something more significant than your fav breakfast treat

The RN should have just sunk the icelandic vessels, unless Iceland agreed to pay compensation to English fisherman.

David Barrett the Icelandic threatened to shut down the Keflavik air base if the British would shoot

...good ploy. We needed keflavik because of the USSR. They did come to play north of Iceland in 75'

Who's the biggest baddest nation that the US and EU at the time (UK included ofc) feared the ever living daylight would stop its hibernation and start a war,,,, If you answer the USSR then you're right, If the brits had sunk our ships and not been punished for it (kinda shitty move when you have 22 warships against 4 coast guard vessels, 2 small CGV's and 2 whalers with small derp cannons) and then you still cant win,,, If iceland had left the EEC/EU at the time and joined the USSR, which was offered i think which made the US put pressure on UK, you would probably have started a war, which would have cost the UK a hell of a lot more than just fish and bruised ego and pride.

I love these Goliath vs David scenarios, in this case British imperialist bullies vs timid Icelandic civilians. Trouble was, they weren't, ie. timid. I remember following this avidly all the way down here in NZ, because our government at the time was having its own battles with foreign trawlers fishing illegally off the coast.

Leander was just a junk as many Frigates from UK. Speed but horrible to be on board in BAD weather, and Icy conditions in North Atlantic!

Those Leander-class frigates were beautiful ships.

Yes the US were unhappy as we were risking a war with Russia and they’d be dragged in. We did a lot of up close visits to Russian warships 😂
