Got to try to Marquise today at the luthier shop. It was like playing butter, just so easy to play with a perfect weight for me. Bright sound but way cleaner than Escent or Diamond (no hissing/tinniness)

I'm an intermediate adult learner and I upgraded my bow. I tested the CodaBow Diamond GX, the Joule and the Marquis. The Joule was too sluggish and tip heavy for my tastes. The Marquis...I wanted to like it, but even though it was roughly the same weight as the Diamond GX (62.14g vs 62.4), while very maneuverable and agile, it didn't have enough sound at the tip. I think if I was a better player, I could appreciate it, especially for light, delicate passages. The Diamond GX, however, felt like a perfect fit. Very balanced, just enough weight to pull a nice sound out of the violin (Mittenwald, c 1850) it seems to almost play itself. I love this bow for the six months I've had it.

I've just ordered a Diamond NX bow and Pirastro Evah Pirazzi string set for my Gliga 1 violin, which for a self taught beginner could be a bit extravagant, but am extremely excited to try them, Of course now I won't be able to blame the bow or strings for my own dismal playing ! ha ha

I’m right now testing out GX and GS. This video only mentions the difference in sound. However, suppleness and balance point differs quite a lot in my opinion between the two. I’m an enthusiastic beginner and have just played for 7 months. I feel more comfortable with the GX. It feels more stable and tracks better, for me. I do like the sound of the GS but it takes more effort to achieve a stable tone on long slow bow strokes. I still think that the GS takes me in the direction I want. Do you think that a GS will prevent my progress or the opposite make me better due to forcing me to use better technique? I can accept that it doesn’t sound perfect all the time. With the GX I don’t need to think, just play. I don’t even need to warm up, it sounds perfect anyway. But perhaps this is contra productive because it does not force me to become better.
@violinlounge3 жыл бұрын
Well, you won't learn anything wrong from the GX and I can imagine that it matches you better at this stage of your playing. A sensible route would be to get the GX, play it for a few years and then see if you want to upgrade to GS or something else.

It'd be nice to hear the Coda Bow Marquise played along side the Arcus S6 you play in the other review video. To my ear the Arcus has more overtones and a bit more color compared to the Coda but I'd love to know if they were both shot on the same day with the same sound/mic settings.

What would be your opinion on the codabow diamond sx and the luma? I have a good ”violon d’étude” and a we dorfler bow. But I always feel like i’m struggling against my bow.... is it ok to go for a diamond gx or would a lower bow do the job....? I need a bow that gives a good sound on the G string that is weaker on my violin... thank you for you videos!

It's personal, so I would definitely try them both out before deciding. However, my personal preference goes to the Luma, as it feels light and agile and I like that.

I wonder if it is helpfull when a student has a bow which is more difficult to manage? Apart from the price that is. Will it take less time to learn to play the violin with a better bow? Or does it give you an advantage that you have learned to handle difficult bows?
@violinlounge5 жыл бұрын
The student bow is very stable, making legato and straight bowing a bit easier, but making it harder to jump, less lively It's kind of a trade off. The performance bows make more advanced bowing techniques easier, but their response is better making them harder to handle for beginners. For each level a bow, I guess, that's something CodaBow has well thought out.
@ankavoskuilen17255 жыл бұрын
@@violinlounge Oké, that makes sense then. I was just wondering.

I'm roughly at Suzuki level 4-5. Unfortunately, I will not be able to try the bow as I will buy it online. There is no possibility of upgrading to GS after buying GX. In this case, which bow would you recommend me to choose? Can we say that playing with GS is more difficult and requiring more expertise than GX?
@violinlounge9 ай бұрын
No, it's not more difficult to play. Actually I think the Marquise is very easy to handle and accessible,. If you like the sound better, maybe on long term it's best to choose the Marquise right away.

Sorry, Coda Bow is not worth the price in our experience. We had a Pridefy model for almost 400€. No proper tension in the rod, flawed hair, Notverband close to the sound of a proper 300€ wood bow on an advanced violin. Extremely disappointing in our case. Made in US not always is good. Even the demonstration sounds flat with lacking brilliancy.
