If you have BMW and you have code P0171 System Too Lean Bank 1 or code P0174 System Too Lean Bank 2 this is the right video. Code P0171 and P0174 are known as codes triggered by vacuum leaks. Most of the times code P0171 and Code P0174 cause by intake leak, vacuum leak, or leaking gasket and the engine will get more air than it measures through the maf. We demonstrated how to fix code P0171 and Code P0174 on BMW e46 330ci but it should be helpful on many models since they all share the same M54 engine:

Excellent video. Let me add one more thing to look for on the list of potential air leaks. I have a 2003 Z4, 2.5 engine. It would throw "system too lean" codes, both banks. I isolated the problem to times when it was idling. That usually points to vacuum leaks. After repeated inspections of every hose even remotely associated with the intake system downstream of the MAF I could never find the leak. What I did find, ultimately, is a small black plastic pipe sticking out of the rear of the intake manifold. It is clearly meant to be used as a vacuum source, but it is not used for anything in my car. It is meant to be capped, (or plugged in some fashion )but the cap had fallen off, allowing a substantial stream of air directly into the intake manifold. I capped the pipe and the codes went away. A $0.05 part after 20 hours of looking.

Your videos are so helpful! I love trying to fix my car myself and I have had great success with your help. I just replaced the fuel pump in my 04 325ci, it’s running much better but the PO174 & PO171 codes are back 😖.I am going to do a visual inspection and now that it’s running I’ll probably try to spray some carb cleaner in the mentioned areas. Thnx.

what about valve cover gasket? Is that a possibility. I noticed that when I remove the oil cap while care running there is only a very slight suction. It's not strong. What does this mean?

QUESTION -- Would running he vehicle low on gas cause these codes to come on? I drove my 2001 BMW 330Ci to the point whereby gas light came on but I did these 3 consecutive times. So I almost ran out of gas and then I only put a little in it -- almost ran out of gas again - put a little more in it -- and almost ran out of gas again - could this cause a vehicle from running lean? And yes --- IT'S DUMB to do this but for personal reasons, I've been preoccupied. Please let me know what you think. Thx a bunch!!!!!!!!!

Hey all, I have an issue with a bmw z3 M54 2.2i. It keeps coming up with bank lean codes and misfires. Both banks and single banks, random misfires, but diagnostic says cylinder 5 is troublesome. No obvious vac leaks anywhere... fault has been getting more frequent, although the car hasn’t run much in the last six months... any thoughts??? Thanks.

Good way to find leak is use a fog machine rig up a hose of some sort and attach it to a vacuum line and blow smoke in it and look for smoke escaping boom you found your leak 25 dollar for machine worth every dime 😉

it is common place to leak, i needed to change it and it was complitly broken. but i still have those codes. i have changed all vacuum hoses, those plugs behind air intake manifold, cracked rubber intake pipes, all crankcase ventilation parts. i think my cars vacuum leak is because broken vacuum hose near fuel filter, craked intake manifold gasket or that weird rubber seal near throttle housing/idle regulating valve(part n.11 61 1 437 453).

My 2004 e46 with 233K miles had two electronic engine failures in the past year. The first time while driving in a cold dark morning with the fog lights, radio, heather on. The dashboard lights light, with an alarm sign, the battery sign and transmission and brakes not working properly. Because my office was just a few blocks away I was able to get to work and parked the car. I the afternoon I got to the car start it without problems and drove home without any issues, checked the battery and the alternators and it showed that the battery was to maintaining the charge while the engine was running and the electronics of the car were on ( fog lights, a/c, seat heather etc.) the charge will drop gradually from 13.5 volts to 11 volts or less. Because of this I changed the alternator. This past week while driving in a cold nigh same thing happened again, with the alarm signs, battery signs, and I stopped the car and re-started it without issues except code P0174 was on. The hoses and seals of the car look ok. Any suggestions for this fantastic car!?
