Code P0456 Evap Small Leak Dodge Caravan / Grand Caravan Town & Country 2001-2007
These can be very difficult to trace, and when you find it, it can take forever for the check engine light to go out. You need to trace the system and check every rubber hose for cracking, no matter how small.

You can erase any EVAP codes after filling the tank and you won't see it till it gets down a quarter on the fuel gauge. After erasing the code, and you see the 1684 code which tattles on you for doing that, if you crank it 50 times, that 1684 will also disappear. It has to be full crank and run till the bell dings and instrument cluster is reset as normal driving. Then drive it about 100 miles and remember to refill the tank each time. Some inspections also check to see if it's been driven at least seven times, or once a day for a week. So long as you keep tank filled each time you drive it before cranking it again, then it will pass emission test. I got my 2003 Grand Caravan pass veip several years that way.

Hard to start can be a lot of things, but a small evap leak wouldn't be one of them, it's likely unrelated. If you drive it a while, turn it off, then try to start it 10 min later and it won't start (or stalls at the end of the block) I would suspect failing fuel pump, otherwise it could be anything.

I had mine checked out, turns out I had a serious leak from the fuel pump, the sending unit was cracked, difficult to send the fuel to the engine I also replaced my evap canister, check and see when the van is running underneath where your fuel tank is, if you’ve got dripping from the fuel tank, I hope it’s not your problem as well, but unfortunately it was mine

That frame and everything underneath is immaculate for having 107,000 miles! Must not have salted roads in the winter?

When I bought it, it had 29k on it, it was 14 years old and it sat under a tree unused for about 10 years! I drive about 30k a year for work.

I don't even want to bother myself with this P0456 code troubleshooting, I just reset it, as it comes up once in 6 months or so and it is not affecting engine performance anyway!

Take the tank "down"... OR Pull up your carpet, remove the oval rubber plug near the top of the tank, and carefully cut out a panel (with care and an angle grinder cutting disc) the size of which will give you access to the top of the tank and the FUEL PUMP.... Which MOPAR should have done AT THE FACTORY. And you will enjoy having when your fuel pump takes a crap on the way home from work some night and you need it to get BACK to work at 7AM the next day... OR you can wait for the BUS.

Yeah, in my Mercedes E500 you simply flip the bottom of the back seat forward & you are staring at the fuel pump. Chrysler was never one to plan ahead.

Yeah, my kid’s Acura has an access panel for the fuel pump! Easy, peasy to replace it! I am watching this because my Caravan doesn’t!

What part of the EVAP system would cause really strong fuel odors?

In my personal experience I have never had an odor along with an evap code, so I'm not sure. Look for a fuel leak. Look under the black plastic plenum on top of the engine with a flashlight. Sometimes rodents build nests under there, if so clean it out and look for a leak around the injectors while the engine is running. Unfortunately you will need to inspect every fuel & evap line bumper to bumper. Hopefully the source will be obvious.

Great video! Can I use this Process for P0440? I’m going to make a smoke machine and was wondering where I can tap into and will the system be open ? 2006 T&C 3.8 240,000 miles. Have recently done catalytic converter,two 02 sensors ,spark plugs ,PCV valve ,vapor canister purge solenoid, gas cap. Thanks!

That is a large leak code. Yeas, check all along the same path, same trouble points, but I would hook the smoke machine after the purge solenoid since that should be closed when the engine is off. My code has since come back, suspecting the solenoid or the sensor now. I really hate this code.

@@DIYBenzGarage love the video very helpful. I had p0456 on my '03 Grand Caravan that didn't clear after installing new gas cap. I thoroughly cleaned the filler area with solvent and scotch Brite then cleaned the gas cap seal and put some petroleum jelly on the seal which cleared the code. Six months later started smelling gasoline and I suspect the evap system. Other videos indicate that the Evaporative System Integrity Module on charcoal cannister have a high failure rate on Chryslers. After I check the hoses for cracks/leaks I'll check that out.

The evap test only runs at startup with the engine cold. Distance travelled is not a factor. It takes two cycles of failure to turn on the engine light and I believe two "pass" cycles to clear it. Generally, you make your change, clear the code and check for pending codes after the next cold start.

You SHOULD be able to check your valve with 12v from the battery & see if you can blow through it when activated, not when off. My issue came back & I think it's because my rack and pinion leaked all over the vapor leak detection pump. Sucks for me.

I threw a EGR valve code, I cleaned it up, cleared the code, and drove it for like 20 miles then threw a vapor code like this, I had the EGR valve off so I thought it was that, then the EGR code came back, I replaced the egr cleared my code and now I wait to see what if any come back, this stuff annoys me

Evap is a PITA, mine came back intermittency.EGR showed up, other symptoms.... New video is in the works, just waiting to see if the problem is actually solved and were they actually all related.
