maybe people that do demos dont understand this, but people that do stuff that have to adhere to some external requirements dont code like that, "oooh, I can live with this". Questing is, is it better to express myself in a programing language, that is precise and deliberate, or use plain English... the only think that AI is good for is teaching new stuff, assuming, that you verify everything it is saying anyway, also the problem with AI is, it does things its own way, you say I would like to do X, and it says here you go... if you are experienced, you critique it and iterate over it, if you are not you will accept it, I have countless examples where AI invents stuff from scratch instead of using excising functionality... in reality working with copilot boils down to a lot of frustrations, because it does things not the way you want, and in the end you code it by yourself anyway :) so to sum it up, if you requirements are vague, or you dont have any expectations, or you are learning something its helpful.

Have you given it a realistic go? I work in traditional industry - you'll hardly find a place with stiffer requirements - and Copilot does understand what the surroundings in the codebase are and gives me very usable suggestions.

@MiTheMer I'm constantly using gpt4o, but not in ide, I've tried many times, it feels like a constant fight, I would rather write a code than scroll through proposed results and pick what i like, or comment and look again. but it's great for learning. If I have no idea what I'm doing, it will let me do it. If I know what I'm doing, it's too painful :-p

I had the same issue, and apparently you can drag & drop the chat anywhere. The little chat icon that's near Copilot Edits - click and drag it to the left panel, you'll see the chat at the old position. You can also drag it directly into Edits, or to a separate window/tab.

The intent detection is not available yet? I switched the extensions to preview but If I try to edit anything without linking files, it still says "Please add the files to be modified to the working set."

All that seemed to do under the hood was execute a bit of python to load the data into pandas and inspect it, or plot it. It's the same thing ChatGPT would have done when that was a new thing, like 2 years ago or so? They've just expanded copilot from fancy auto complete to auto delete & complete.

no one anywhere ever goes into the costs of the model providers API calls used when using co-pilot. There is the copilot subscription but then a running meter (I assume) for the API calls, and I wish there would be both observability, but also open disclosure of peoples costs when using co-pilot with the models. I have this code base and it's such and such size in context, and I want image use and gen, and it's $x.yz amount per week using this model, or anything. Just hard to seem to find answers on what the costs might be for all the models, as I can see one getting excited, coding and building, having fun, but then get hit with a hard truth from the LLM used in the code assist.

The cost is at about $0.03 - $0.06 per 1000 tokens in ChatGPT 4. The 10$ MS charges does include a part of the research cost for the future versions as well.

@code I personally don't like the idea of bringing own API keys for copilot models to have vision, given they already are multi-modal SOTA models unlike text only models, It could be better to include them within the package else paying for what is already there means something like paying for that one button to click for action in your car to take place that you know you can click and system is there inside the car but the company doesn't want you.

My feeling is that Cursor is so seamless and reliable I'm just hesitant to change unless there's some truly novel feature or the consensus becomes overwhelming. Cursor also does a lot of hard coded algorithms to point the LLMs to relevant code features like function names, signatures, connections between different parts of code. Does anyone know if Copilot injects human intelligence into the process in this way?
