I did a coding bootcamp, got a pretty good gig right out of the bootcamp. That being said I was no where near job ready, I got lucky and had a company and boss that spent time on me and getting my skills up to snuff.

People need to understand programming jobs wouldn’t pay that well if anyone could become proficient at it in less than a year.
@69-Bot Жыл бұрын
Depends, I think most people could become proficient at HTML and CSS in a couple of months if they put enough time into. But on the other hand, something like PowerShell or Python would take a lot of time. When I first looked at HTML, I saw the pattern, very simple and easy to pick up, when I look at python it’s like looking at a foreign language, and the same for my short attempt at learning the basics of powershell, wasn’t willing to dedicate enough time to understand the complexity.

I attended one of these college-endorsed bootcamps, and despite having the option to learn from their online system at a lower cost, I decided to attend the classroom sessions, assuming it would be more effective with a tutor available. Unfortunately, it turned out to be a disappointing experience. Instead of receiving the expected guidance from a knowledgeable coding tutor, we were simply overwhelmed with videos. It became apparent that the supposed tutor was only doing this to earn money for her nursing class, and she wasn't much help at all. Consequently, I failed the course because I wasn't getting the assistance I needed and was left with the advice to "google it" if I had questions.😡

One of the things that drives me fucking crazy is that they try to depict college students as lazy bozos who just get a name on a piece paper. I've been on multiple hiring committees and I'm open to anyone with any background but there is always going to be people with STEM degrees that have extremely impressive resumes that are going to totally outcompete those with bootcamp certs. That's just reality.

Something I learned in video production and I think it applies here even more so. Often the only guys who are making bank are the ones creating their own work. If YOU come up with a good idea for an app and you develop it, you own the intellectual property. The potential income is greater than if you're just someone's employee. But often consistency of salary is far more important. Most of us would be lucky to come up with 1 great original idea for an app. So working for someone else can be less stressful and more rewarding in the long run.

What do you have to say about Codecademy, as they also promise a 6 month full stack developer course?
@I_Love_Lord Жыл бұрын
There is a difference in approach. Codecademy (and many others) pitch more of a covering content, means they will teach you all the things in 6 months (or whatever they say) which is 'necessary' to land a job, means giving complete training, but then its upto student to polish skills and get better and polish skills as required by employers, However Celever Programmer's main pitch is that all you gotta do is complete the bootcamp and there you go, next day you will see yourself in Google or Netflix or Amazon etc coding and stacking money. Its same like if football coaches coming up with 'hey, just come and train with me, and I gaurantee you that after completing my training, you will be a next Cristiano Ronaldo ready to sign contract with Real Madrid, or PSG or FC baracelona'. I hope you got my point

So is it not possible to learn a lot in 6 months?
@tymondabrowski122 ай бұрын
It is possible to learn a lot, but you probably won't be at the same level as someone after a good uni with 5 year CS course (which is more of what FAANG expects from you). And if teachers are not competent or don't even come to the class, then you'll learn even less. CS is a huge topic, even just programming is a big topic. Would you expect to become a proficient lawyer in 6 months? Thankfully, programming (unlike law) doesn't require you to know *all* of what's out there to know, so you might still be able to land a job if you really applied yourself through those 6 months (though might be harder now). But realistically, you're still at best a proficient code monkey, not an engineer. Which is not bad, you can improve, it just takes a lot of practice and understanding and learning and practice. For example, in my uni on the master's degree course there were math courses where you were expected to deliver a project at the end of the semester in an entirely new language and it was expected you'll just learn it on the way on your own, and no one complained because it would just be a tenth language, similar to all the previous ones, and frankly a good practice, too (we could choose between Python and R there, I believe). Teachers knew that a new language, more suitable for the task than languages we knew before, would not slow us down. It's this kind of programming efficiency: you can just adapt to whatever technology you need to use. Plus, 6 month bootcamps probably won't give you all the nittry gritty background knowledge that you learn in uni or in a longer course than 6 months.

I agree that this was something terrible that ruined peoples lives and outlook on the industry but you can %100 percent become a software engineer in 3 to 6 months and get a job at top tech companies. It takes more then just following a bootcamp training but I have seen many do it with the right mentorship.

@chrisalt971 it depends on what you are looking for but there are places like "Course Careers" who take the time to set you up, teach you the job and help you get a job. Ive seen people get hired in a week, 2 months, 3 months and sometimes even before they finish the course.
