It took me 3 years of training myself constantly, and once I started looking for a job, it took me 4 months to get one. I don't regret the decision, I've been coding for money 1 year and 4 months now. Also, I started when I was 33 years old, now I'm 37. For me the best thing to do was to learn PHP, because in my country there is a lot of PHP jobs. All I learned most of those 3 years was Python, which is fine, but there is not a lot of Python jobs here. So learn what companies ask for first.

Thanks for the great advice. You're the first coding programmer Ive come across with street mentality so you def give different aspects and angles from the typical nerd and say things the way it is.

If it takes a year, or longer, decide whether or not you are worth the sacrifice it takes to change your life & career path. It might take you longer than it takes others, but so what. It's like working out only because you wanna get huge muscles or abs in short time. If it takes years, but improves your lifestyle then it's worth it.

this was incredible advice. thanks cody for sharing your knowledge and experience in being a true developer. Even though i know nothing of web development

Disagree quality of lifestyle is not always about more money some people it's what they Do day in day out on a day in basis. Some people work in corporate jobs and they make big money but are depressed and unhappy they may have dreamed of dancing or becoming a sports player

I'm part of this course where they are teaching us python and the fundamentals of thinking like a programmer and the course is moving really fast. I'm only one month in, but I've been messing around with html/python for a couple months and I'm getting very discouraged already. You help me keep my head up and keep trucking so I appreciate these videos Joe. I just wish we could switch brains for a day lol

Note to self: Make a list of projects you want to build. This way, it keeps me focused on actually doing the projects instead of wasting time. I can think "Wait a minute, I got something I can do, let's go!" For example, I made a quick Python script to convert tax withholding data to an Excel formula. An idea popped in my head: "Wait, I can do the same thing in Javascript, JQuery, PHP, whatever, and with some good UI, everyone can use it!" With these ideas, I gotta WRITE IT DOWN. That way, in conjunction with the Coding Phase training, I can crank out some cool stuff for a portfolio. Ok, so what does this have to do with becoming a paid developer? If you have an idea of a useful project to show employers, make a note of it, then do it! If you don't know how to do certain features, learn what you need, then do it!

Learning code isn't a sprint, it's a marathon. Also In the UK especially its never just HTML,CSS and JS its that + 10 or 5 other things. One problem I have is I get fixated on a project, Im always improving it and adding extra functionality or making the code cleaner. Is this a problem ?

Any advice if there are no junior development jobs in my area? I’m super motivated to put myself out there and do what it takes to get a job. Just not sure what to do if the jobs aren’t available close to me. Do people hire junior developers remotely?
@joshsturgess22196 жыл бұрын
I'm in your same position, and my advice is to be open to relocating if the right opportunity comes for you. Also, try attending the closest tech/coding meetups near your area and meet people. Most remote positions require allot of trust and usually only go to experienced devs, but there is always freelancing too! Good luck!

Joe, what do you think is better and why: study only front-end for 3-4 months as you said in the video or study how to build a website front-end and back-end, thus taking much more time before being able to apply? You know in another comment I linked you this guide I'm following now - github.com/P1xt/p1xt-guides/blob/master/job-ready.md - but I'm tempted to take other courses like the web developer bootcamp course on Udemy. Do you believe I should continue on this path or choose other course based on the timeline?
@CodingPhase7 жыл бұрын
I think you need to atleast master html and css if you can build any page from any design then you are ready to do backend
