I’m almost impressed by how incredibly vague he managed to be. Zero mention of what he did, zero mention of the gravity of it and zero mention of the victim. Most KZbinrs at least pretend to think what they did was wrong, but he couldn’t even be arsed to do that.

@@fatsajakI hate even defending Logan Paul cuz he's trash too, but at LEAST his first apology felt real. He squeezed out some tears, the phrasing was so iconic it became a literal copy pasta, people recite it till this day. Cody just went "it's ok y'all are mad at me for whatever y'all are mad at me for and I forgive you". That's nothing, that's not an apology or even an admittance of guilt. Just no effort, and I guarantee it's because if he admits to a crime, he risks not being able to get his American citizenship. I don't think he needs it if this is how he behaves. We have enough problems.

Your title really hits home for me because I cannot tell you the amount of times I’ve witnessed men absolutely derail their lives because they REFUSE to talk or channel their emotions with anyone/anything let alone a professional. It’s really fascinating and yeah you can blame the whole “oh people don’t let them do that cuz toxic masculinity/men’s emotions are overlooked” but like they excuse just can’t be the whole reason¿ I feel like women do not get this pass as well, but for the reverse reasons as we’re meant to be “emotional aware”

This shows so well that as far as wealthy men are concerned, there is no such thing as cancel culture. It definitely wasn't positioned as an apology or even acknowledgment video. This channel is specifically about his training/running. I think he just thought last minute that he should include something about why he's been gone and that he understands if people see him differently. Definitely a soft return launch. Adam McIntrye mentioned that it might be due to a creator needing to be on the platform once in a 6 month period to get ad revenue... might be that...

For me it's not really about legality. Where I'm from the age of consent is 15. But it's something you just don't do, morally. If you are in your mid 20s you shouldn't be interested in 17 year olds. You just SHOULDN'T. And if they show interest in you your reaction should be "oh, this child has a crush, that's sweet, and I remember how it was when I was a teen. I hope they find someone closer to their own age to experience these things with because I'm far too old to want to do anything with this child" What you don't do is HOOK UP WITH THE CHILD this is not a hard concept to grasp

I agree - the attitude with people like this, Cody included, is *always* slimy. You wouldn’t be opting for someone so much younger than you if your goal wasn’t to take advantage. Tana was a fan of his, no less, and I believe it was the general beginning of her KZbin career. There was such a power imbalance between the two of them, the only excuse he’d have if she was 18 would be a legal technicality; and if your whole argument is “technically, it wasn’t illegal…”, you definitely don’t come across as a good person in the situation.

When you mentioned the "damned if you do, damned if you don't" part, I think that's partially the case. I think (at least) two things are true here. One is I don't think Cody feels bad for it, and I don't think he has much remorse for much of anything. The second thing is entirely suspicion based on my experience in the legal profession: I suspect he consulted a lawyer and was told not to admit anything, even to Tana, because it could open him up to liability if Tana decided to pursue it. I don't think this excuses the fact that Cody is BARELY addressing the situation -- again, I don't think he feels bad for anything other than getting whatever consequences he has gotten. But I also would not surprised to find he was told not to say anything. But again, it just goes to show that cancellation is a myth unless the person is genuinely willing to take personal responsibility -- or is forced to by the legal system. James Charles, Jeffree Star, Shane Dawson, Colleen Ballinger, Gabbie Hanna, the Paul brothers, people like them are the biggest examples but even smaller channels won't get "cancelled." Every creator, no matter what they've done, will always have a fan base that continues watching and downplays or encourages their behavior. These creators may lose subscribers, income, sponsors, whatever, but almost none of them leave for good, and they don't suffer anything devastating enough to impact their lives in a way us "normal" people could relate to. They'll still be rich and influential, just maybe a teensy less rich and influential than they were before the scandal.

Also regarding your title and my previous comment regarding this non apology apology strategy working better for men vs. women, do you think women followers and women in general giving passes towards emotionally toxic men fuels this cycle of them never going to therapy? Like why change if they can still get what they want (male content creators continued fame, regular men access to a second mom) if there’s always someone in the wings not expecting better?
@manyyoumas
@manyyoumas 20 күн бұрын
I mean… expecting women to do all the heavy lifting for men’s growth is literally the root of the problem. I don’t think letting this behavior pass is ok but not there’s also no such thing as the perfect victim and trying to frame this issue as yet another thing women need to work on is just wrong. If anything, I think men need better masculine role models that are not alt right or faking-being-woke scumbags. Unfortunately, part of the problem is that men like that don’t take anything seriously until they hear it genuinely from another guy or until it actually effects them, so that’s another reason why expecting women to constantly be the pedal of change is pointless.

Didn't Tana say something like she's had so much worse stuff happen to her that she feels like this isn't such a big deal in comparison? (Heavily paraphrasing because my memory is bad and I don't usually keep up with this stuff.) I don't think that means this wasn't traumatic to her at all.

Exactly, she was just saying she has been through other traumatic events that she thinks she more of an effect on her

I wonder if he’s like… legally able to apologize for it? Cause it was literally a crime so could he apologize without it being an admission of guilt?
@scipiodriver4076

No, but he is unlikely to face prosecution regardless. Even if he was, it would be a consequence of his own choices. If he truly felt remorse, he would acknowledge what he did

I hope Tana is genuinely ok, if not now, some day soon. I hope she heals from so many of her experiences. She’s been exploited so much, so young. I know they aren’t awesome people but I have inexplicable soft spots for Trisha P + Tana. I still hope they grow into good people with safe healthy lives someday.

Just to say: your hair looks amazing in this video On subject. I hate I'm not at all surprised by this response. It's almost boring at this point with how predictable these shitty apologies are. You'd think influencers would learn after a while...

"No one cares anymore." I know it feels that way, but the truth is, people have never cared about the victims of male violence, whether they be women/femmes, queer men, or children. Giving a shit is actually a fairly recent occurrence.

Guys, you know this is serious, right? Like, he is a canadian living in the US. He has a kid and a business (and employees) that depend on him. What he (allegedly) did with Tana, although like you said might not have been traumatic to her, was, in fact, a crime. I feel like anyone who is surprised he was vague about it actually didn't get the situation. It's not something he can just address in an apology video. There's ppl waiting for him to approach it like a youtuber would approach getting caught for bad tweets from 15 years ago, it's just not like that

for men, though, it surely is. men in this country face little to no consequences for sexual assault, especially so close to the statute of limitations coming into play. I totally get what you're saying -- this is more serious than a grey hoodie KZbin apology and therefore he's treading carefully, but he doesn't deserve to continue to have a platform then, in my opinion.

unfortunately I have a feeling he was advised not to use specific words or phrases in referring to what happened. b/c regardless of apologizing or not, he committed a crime; and acknowledging it could/would be taken as a confession. I don't agree w/ it, but that's probably one of the reasons he used such vague language

I hope that this will be different than it is with James Charles and the like. James Charles was always a nasty person and every one of his fans is too, they liked him for that reason. But Cody Ko built his image on being a good guy and relatable. Sure, he'll probably still have his section of douche-bro fanboys but I'm hoping most of his fans have already left. Not to mention that it seemed like he was already speed-running the end of his career for like a year before the reveal. I think he knew Tana wouldn't stay silent forever and started pumping out the most low effort content imaginable at lightspeed with sponsors on each video and constant merch drops. I was hoping he would've saved up enough money to just stay off the internet forever but I guess not smh.

He did reach out to Tana after all of the drama happened. She reassured him that she's fine with what happened, that she wasn't traumatized, she held no ill feelings for him, that he and her were good and everything was fine between them two. This was verbalized by Tana, herself. Y'all want her to be a victim so badly. She could not legally consent, but having sex with a 23-year-old while she was 17 did not traumatize her. It just didn't. And if the supposed victim is OK with the horrific criminal, then the public can fuck off with what they have to say. The only person Cody really has to make right with is Tana.
