Grew up in the rocky mountains and everything was bought in bulk or to last as long as possible because you never knew what was around the corner, father/grandfather had big veg gardens and were pretty self reliant. I hate that I've let myself slip into a modern service industry/throw away type existence and everything I do to change that is a major victory. People like Cody show it can be done, more power to him!!

Excellent! People should be prepared not because they are afraid, but because they don't want to live in fear. The closer I get to being prepared, the less I have to think about it. I won't have to worry about surviving because I will be living. Great video, Mr. Lundin!

Looking forward to seeing more of Cody next year! Although the woman in this interview may not be prepared for sustainable long term living, she will be better equipped to handle the vast majority of incidents that are likely to occur that could affect services for three days-three months. She'll be better off than 95% of the people out there. I wish more people had her mindset.

Here is a simple motto that is the key to good food storage. "Eat what you store, store what you eat". Your food storage is your pantry. When disaster strikes you wont have to worry about what you are going to with your "emergency food". You will be eating pretty much the same things you always do. If you eat the food you store it will be constantly rotated. So you never have to worry about things going bad. Pick some staple items with a good shelf life and buy them in bulk. Try to only buy things on sale. Recently my local grocery store had a sale on whole wheat spaghetti. It was over 50% off. So I bought all 14 packs on the shelf. Now I have enough spaghetti to last me until the next sale. Toward the end of passover I picked up large boxes of matzah that were on sale. Always look for sales. Always buy in bulk if possible. I buy my rice in 40 pound bags at the Asian mart. I buy beans in 20 pound bags, 20 pounds of oats, 25 pounds of sugar ETC. Generally things a cheapest when purchased in bulk. I like to store my bulk goods in 5 gallon buckets with gamma seal lids. The gamma seal lids rock. They make is very easy to get into the bucket. Sales and bulk quantities will save you money. So it isn't that costly to have a month or more of food on hand. Just take it slow and your stash will grow.

This is not 'survival' or even getting ready for a disaster, this woman and her family are buying foods that make sense. People used to live like this back in the 1930-50's, being a little self sufficient, not relying on Government for your every need and having a house that wasnt full of un-necessary items to waste money. Its good to see people coming back around to this 'normal' way of living again.

Perhaps the thing I liked best about this video was the very end. The kids were at the gun range, with shots being fired all around them, and they weren't fazed a bit. They weren't scared out of their minds and they weren't running for cover. The were surrounded by guns and they were as safe as could be because they were surrounded by GOOD PEOPLE with guns. Way to go parents, keep up the good work!

Arrogant preppers? Come on, this life style is a learning process. Even veteran preppers are constantly adding to or changing their methods. If I could get my friends and family to even have a three months supply of food and water that would be better than it is now. We need to be supportive and encourage others not criticize them.

Do you have food in a pantry or cupboard? You're a prepper. Do you have bandaids, gauze and antibiotic ointment in the house? You're a prepper. Do you fill your gas tank before it gets to empty? You're a prepper. Any tools in the house? Spare bedding, spare clothing (suitable for the seasons), spare shoes, a savings account? You're a prepper. You don't need a bunker, a four wheeler, an arsenal . . . you just need to THINK about where you live, where you work, what the routes out of town are (if you are in tornado, hurricane or earthquake country). Then you need to make SENSIBLE preparations - the finance guru's tell you to have 3-6 months of your budget in emergency savings, your state likely has an emergency prep website (most folks have never even looked at the thing, but it is there) which gives advice on things like food, water, first aid, medicine, contact lists, pet info, etc. People can tell you who each Kardashian is dating, but they can't tell you how to sharpen the knives in the kitchen -- so sad. You don't have to spend a fortune, you may not do enough to survive, but if you do SOMETHING then you are ahead of the game. Cheers! p.s. - Here's hoping you have a couple cans of ravioli, a gallon of water, a trash bag, some clothesline, a bandana and a KelTec 3AT -- total cost $200 and you are now more prepared than about 300 million other americans. . .

How is it that "prepping" was a common way of life for people all over the world when my grandparents were in there youth, but now it is considered to be only for those "wacko survivalists". Here in America, we've become too dependent upon others to rescue,provide or take care of us instead of us taking care of ourselves.

@jordythebassist her idea may not be perfect, but it is a start. You have to admit that where she is at is much better than where the majority of people in America are at. Food storage is a huge part of being able to survive when the good ole supermarket is out of service. Delaying death is better than simply bowing before it. That delay could be enough to save her and her families lives. Something is better than nothing.

While food storage is a excellent idea, wet packed canned goods is a short term solution. Dry packed staple ingredients or dehydrated food has far longer shelf life and is much lighter if it has to be moved. ...but its just advice.
@kebertxela941
@kebertxela941 9 жыл бұрын
+0 Subscribers he is right about the weight, but I agree with you,people think canned stuff goes bad way before it does. Another advantage of canned though is that if you dont have alot of water, canned comes with its own water. Mixing dry\dehydrated with canned is the ideal.
@citizen762
@citizen762 9 жыл бұрын
John Smith John, you and 0 must be noobs. Sure canned food lasts longer than the sell by dates, but they certainly won't last hundreds of years, and most of the time the seals will fail in less than 10 if stored in less than perfect conditions. Plus there is evidence that nutrition is lost over time. My original comment was mostly regarding the mobility of wet compared to dry food. Water is extremely heavy.
@kebertxela941
@kebertxela941 9 жыл бұрын
Looking at my original comment I should have stated it more along the lines that you also were involved in the conversation citizen, sorry about that.I didnt agree with the hundred year claim. But I guess I wasnt clear enough, it was suppose to represent balance. If your more of a "bug out" type of person then dry food is the obvious choice, but if you are a "bug in" type of person cans\canning\jarring is a great choice.Keeping the most amount of water on hand is important if you are concerned with possible future (clean)water shortages. But if you are not hiding in bunker and there is a chance that you need to maintain mobility then you would be a fool to put your the majority of your stock into canned. At that point most all of your wet stuff should just be clean water.

No matter, nothing lasts forever, even with knowledge Cody has made the point many times...surviving is no way to die. With 400,000,000 (that's million) people in the USA alone...consider if there where 40,000,000 deer to hunt...that is one deer for every 10 people, Deer won't last long would it. Texas has one long drought and has the concern they will not be able to populate the cow herds in a few more months ...it will be mind blowing when SHTF! This video is an example of sustained comfort.

First off, I watched this on tv and I really enjoyed it, Thanks Cody! Secondly I see a lot of negative comments. I agree that it takes well rounded skills to survive alot of situations however folks do not fall into the drugery of disrespecting someone just because you "think" it will not help them. If folks in N.O. had stocked up they would not have been as taxing.If they had "Cody" skills afterwards they would have been better off as thinkers and doers! It takes both. Please Stay Positive

@jordythebassist - while I agree that her ideas might be a bit naive, you have to start somewhere. I owuld rather have someone like her, with a mindset that, while flawed is at least open, rather than the "ultra prepper" who feels they know everything. Give her some credit. Those of us who are of this survival and responsible mindset will never win over people if we degrade them for their limitations and tentative first steps. Encourage, educate and work together!

Because Cody suffers from narcissism, no one is equal to him in his opinion. His couch potato fans feeds that ego. It was his ego that got him fired, He threatened to quit the show one time to many. After he was fired he spewed sour grapes and bad mouthed the Dual Survival show. He didn't stop with that, he called all the other survival guys on TV media whores. Now he blames Discovery Chanel because, he hasn't be offered a new show. Not only is Cody arrant, but not very savvy, if he thinks he should have a plum job offer, after all the vile comment's he has made. I hope Cody's lawsuit reaches court, and is made public. NOTICE how the editor and/or camera-man chooses to get a close up of the "go away" sign, close up of SPAM and a GIANT bag of beans, and focus on the weapons. @Shaereub Yes the colony is fixed in a way that it is produced and to achieve the highest ratings. You see no people with a missing limb, blind, overweight or uneducated. Go to Wal-Mart and look around because those people are the ones that are going to be with you in a real disaster. You might get lucky to get a mathematician or mechanical engineer or even better yet a doctor but chances are people with less survival skills then you are going to cling on for a better chance to live.

People get the wrong idea about teaching young children to shoot. Instead of teaching them to shoot. You teach the gun safety. Like what to do if they see a gun out of the case, what to do if they find a round stuff like that. I guarentee that if you do this first, when they are older and you teach them to shoot, they will respect their gun even more.

I agree with some of you about self reliance being able to grow and harvest and store your own food and hunting. But not everyone can do that. My family has land, but not all families have land. And not many of us are going to let poachers and trespassers hunt on our lands and take food from our families mouths. There is a reason we have signs that say TKO (Trespassers Keep Out) and (Those who trespass will be shot, those who are still moving will be shot again!). I do love America.

I think most people can grow food. You don't need a ton space to grow a few fruits and vegetables. You may not be able to grow all that you eat; but you can grow something. If live in an apartment you can grow a few things on your balcony or patio. If you have a backyard, so much the better. Instead of growing lawns, perhaps people should be growing food. :) Unless you are homeless you should be able to grow SOMETHING.

@jordythebassist maybe she is thinking of surviving in the suberbs since that is where she lives and will be for the immediate future if something bad happens? IF she lives in the woods or near the desolate desert, then its a different story.

never shop at a grocery store, buy bulk bags of beans/rice at smart and final restaraunt supply or costco, have a garden, raise rabbits

@7iga.....Hello Germany this is Canada :0) Last night my brother and I talked about the Americans with tons of ammo and guns that is selling out in stores all over the U.S. Apparently in the U.S.10 people die from guns everyday in America and they are often children. BUT,on another note.......would you and I...... do what they are doing to prepare for this GREATEST DEPRESSION or would we leave it to chance and hope for the best ?

For bush people who can live Off Grid, even the coming apocalypse wont bother them much, but all the city folks are doomed! Unless they learn how to set rabbit snares! And they will need those snares to stop rabbits from eating the veggie gardens theyre gonna have to learn to farm!

@barstoolguru you wouldn't need someone with a PHD to help you. Just someone who can lend a hand. People (no matter what job they have) can work as a team if at least one person knows what to do. The more people you have working on somthing, the faster a job gets done.

@MutsuKazuma No I am not a y-tube warrior- just a realist that does not look to others for what I can do for myself and one is getting a job and being a productive member of society. One thing I am waiting for; you so say something intelligent... warrior!!

@jordythebassist What the family was doing was exactly what Cody Layed out in his book, That family would be able to survive until the neighbors died, then they could eat the corpses and await rescue. If not they have an edge if they do need to bug out. Do you really need to be so critical? We can't all live in Montana hunting and gathering for our food. In a long term situation Animal Husbandry would be the way to go anyway.

wouldn't matter if it was allowed or not. the bad guys will get guns regardless, leaving law abiding citizens without a relevant means of protecting themselves against armed criminals.
