It's not practical. You're heating water, that takes a ton of energy. You're getting very little back. That tiny flame would not be enough to heat the approx. 20 gallons of water in the bottom of that barrel. If you instead used a wood fire or coal, etc. it would just make more sense to use that heat energy rather than from the methane produced. If this were large scale like a brewery vat with a wood fire underneath I could see it being viable.

Hello Cody, I know it has been a while since you made this video and I do not know if you will be looking at comments from older videos, but I thought I would give it a chance regardless. Over the past few months I have been thinking about how it would be possible to make liquid hydrocarbons (diesel, for example, especially given prices currently) using the Fischer-Tropsch process. My full idea is to use a methane generator like this or woodgas from charcoal production to produce the raw feedstock. This would then be cleaned and then broken down into hydrogen and carbon monoxide to feed into the Fischer-Tropsch process. Obviously the system would not be very fast, even though parts of the process are used industrially, and likely not economically viable, but I thought the idea might be interesting to test or at least think about. I don't expect a video on this or anything, I just remembered this video and thought the idea fit.

@lightdark005 жыл бұрын
It's 12019, still no part three. I think they lost power, the methane generator froze, and that was it. There might be a small update about it in another video somewhere.
@callmeanythingbutlatefordinner5 жыл бұрын
You can also use the compressor from an old fridge to fill a standard propane bottle!!!

How's the methane generator going. Haven't heard much about it in a long while! Are you still producing a decent amount and have you found some good uses for it?
@corbonzo18 жыл бұрын
wow. was not expecting that much of an output. AMAZING! thanks for introducing me to this technique and science

Hi Cody. Please can you invent a contraption that means your rabbits can sit up high and their shit automatically mixes with melting snow, to feed the machine, with a wind/solar powered actuator keeping the mix up and a self-perpetuating ecosystem feeding the rabbits?

Cody I was going to make something like this and was wondering where did you get the bacteria in the start? Loving the videos so far and can not wait for 1000000000 subs good luck

G'day, Yay Team ! 23 years ago I bought a Toyota Stout with a 6 Cyl 142 Cu. In. Holden "Red" Motor, running on LPG (search my "Mad Scientist" Playlist, for "The Rolls-Royce-Holden-Toyota Helicopter Stout !", to see it...!) ; and because it ran on Gas, & because I live 10 miles from the biggest Concentration-Camp for Cattle in Oz (Ranger's Valley "Feed Lot"), I did once crunch the Numbers on running "a 6-Cylinder Family Car" on Methane. It was an old Book I read, predating the Continuous-Flow system you're using ; but what I discovered taught me much about the nature of "Methane-Power", as seen in the 2nd & 3rd Mad Max videos. It seems that using "Batch Digestion" to run such a Vehicle 100 Km (60 miles) per week, one needed to build a 4-Chamber Digester, with each Chamber comprising a 1,000 (US) Gallon Tank, buried in a Hole lined with Insulation, and 2 Ft of Insulation overtopping it, equipped with a Mechanical Agitator & Heating Tubes... ; 3 Chambers were to be Brewing at any one time, with the other one being emptied of Sludge & recharged with 1 Ton of Fresh Moist Cowpoop. So, it only takes playing with 1 Ton of Cowturds going in, plus 750 Litres of Sludge being removed from the system, weekly ; to generate enough Bio-Gas to be able to scrub it of C.O.-2, and run it in a Water-Cooled Spark-Ignition Engine from a Gasometer, to turn a Water-Cooled 3-Stage Compressor to squeeze the Methane to 2,000 PSI to go in long narrow Steel Cylinders, with which to feed the Engine of the Fire Chariot...., and, all the Hot Water carrying the "Waste-Heat" from the Methane-Engine/Compressor combination has to be pumped through the Chambers of the 3 "working" Chambers... Your Continuous-Flow Design means that if you postulate a single suitably-plumbed 5,000 Gallon buried & insulated Poly-Tank, with two adjoining Gasometers for the Biogas & Scrubbed Methane, & the Engine/Compressor...; then to drive your classic "Normal Car" 60 miles per Week will *"only"* require you to shovel 320 Pounds of Cowshit per day into the Tank, while adding 50 Gallons of fresh Water & removing 60 Gallons of Sludge... I'm sorry, I'm a lazy Hypocrite & I run my Fire-Chariot on 22 Litres of Fossil-sourced Petroleum per week, to drive 250 Km (156 Miles) or so...; but I do have a 30 Watt "Mk-8 SunFoil" on the Roof, which may be saving me between 1 & 3 Litres per week... I don't get to say that I'm "driving Fossil-Free" on Carbon-Neutral Methane, but I don't spend my life shovelling Cowshit, either..; and I'm covering the same Road, with the same Load, at the same Speed, on less Motion-Lotion. And all it takes is adding a Streamlined Solar Array & Battery Charge-Controller to the Automobile Battery, in parallel to the Engine-Driven Alternator's Regulator. Every time the Alternator's Regulator "sees" Solar Current at the (Fully Charged - while sitting in the Parking-Lot...) Battery-Terminals, the Alt's Reg. decides the Battery is already full, and reduces it's Output.... And, every Vehicle burns a lot less Fuel, when the Alternator is not loading-up it's Driven-Pulley with Electromagnetic Drag, trying to quickly finish recharging the Battery (which had been sulphating while part-flat, since the last time the Engine was shut-down before the Battery had finished being Recharged....). So, um, I love your Concept & Design for a Continuous-Flow Methane Producer...; but I don't want to spend my life collecting & shovelling & disposing of Shit, just(ifiably ?) to get around... I suspect a Tricycle Land-Yacht, and waiting till the Wind is "Fair" for the Journey, until the Road Network collapses (soon). Such is Life, Have a good one.... ;-p Ciao !

will lawn clippings generate methane?
@theCodyReeder8 жыл бұрын
yes but needs to be mixed with high nitrogen items.
@nedshead59068 жыл бұрын
Thanks Cody, so a methane powered lawnmower running off its own clippings is possible, that's awesome!
@arjenvandewalle9758 жыл бұрын
I think a lawnmower would need a bit too much energy for that :)
@nedshead59068 жыл бұрын
I don't mean running directly from the digester as the methane is being produced, I mean building up a supply of methane over a couple of weeks (I mow approx once a fortnight here in Aus) and then using that gas to power the mower. all I need is about 10 minutes mower runtime a fortnight to get my lawns done
@arjenvandewalle9758 жыл бұрын
I see what you mean. But you would't be able to get the amount of energy requiered to run your mower from the grass you would cut with the mower, see what I mean? Ofcourse you could run anything on energy produced by a methane generator but I was talking about the input being to small in the generator itself

Great project you have here. Put it on latrine, get some propane fridge (I think it can run on methane too). And you have your self powered cool food and drink. Or you can do some plumbing and have lights in the house (just like in last centuries in old towns).

You just used your fingers to put out a flame and melted tube. How does that not hurt you? :o Unless, of course, your fingers were wet.

@MuzikBike8 жыл бұрын
How does he do it? We may never know. First a magnetic finger, now this....
@Matt_102038 жыл бұрын
KevFive It starves the flame of oxygen fast enough that it goes out instantly and the heat from the tube probably dissipated extremely quickly because plastic isn't great at keeping heat.
