Wadup? Love all the vids. We have a biogas plant in Germany that works by the same principle, digesting the pig poo from ours and neighbouring farms. By the time it has fully fermented over about 150 days there is basically nothing left but water and minerals that then get spread back on the fields as fertiliser. All the energy in the poo that would otherwise have evaporated into the atmosphere is converted into methane and used to drive stationary truck engines that are coupled to generators that feed into the national grid. The heat produced by the engines heats the pig barn and the neighbourhood. In a year this saves the equivalent of about 1.7 million litres of heating oil. The technology is still too expensive to make bg plants self sustaining but vids like this will get more people thinking about how to make the whole process simpler and more efficient. Good on ya.

Hey Cody, nice project, but as a microbiologist, I have some tips to improve your bioreactor: First of all, since your feed tube seems to be open to the outside, oxygen will continuously diffuse into your bioreactor slowing down or even stopping anaerobic processes. Might be a good idea to attach a lid to it. Secondly, it would have been so much more time efficient if you´d just jumpstart your culture with glucose to enrich the biomass concentration. The idea of your manual magnetic stirrer is a step in the right direction, but if you really plan on having a decent efficiency you need a continuous homogenization with a batch this size. (Just had an idea of maybe implementing a sterling engine stirrer - since you are already loosing energy due to the large heat gradient from the barrel to the garage/outside. Might as well use it, but I'm no engineer so it could also have not enough power). Your feed composition looks ok, but next time please try to break it down into smaller bits. It significantly increases the bioavailability (due to surface area, diffusion efficiency etc.). And finally, if you have the possibility to heat it to around 36°C (97°F) do it, temperature makes a big difference if it comes to metabolic activities. But you might actually not have to heat that much since the reactor itself will produce a significant amount of heat. That´d be all that immediately came to my mind after watching your video. If you are interested in further ideas/discussion I'd be happy to lend my expertise.

do the rabbits have a space where the floor isn't a wire netting? It must be painful for them if they don't have a plain surface to walk and sleep on
@hceercs82468 жыл бұрын
Another major point of concern for those rabbits is they need plenty of time *outside* of that cage in order to be healthy. they're rodents sure, but rabbits are extremely active and have those powerful legs for a reason. You won't end up with a happy bunny if they don't get several hours out of the cage a day.

The issue with making assumptions like that is there are far more people who have rabbits that *don't* know how to take care of them than there are who *do*. I'm not saying Cody doesn't know what he's doing, I fully trust he does, but I'd really like some form of confirmation since far too many times I've seen rabbits not get taken care of properly.

TerrahBite I dont know whether you've watched the video but outside it's nearing a foot of snow. That's not rabbit weather. Im sure they do get time outside but I should imagine less so in the current conditions. And as for the mesh floor, rabbit natuarally live in cold rough burrows and cross rough terrain regularly. A fine mesh floor with gaps smaller than their feet will not hurt them whatsoever. I feel you think that since they're small and fluffy they aren't hardy and that's simply not the case.

Hey Cody, I'm no chemist but I do brew beer and I have a question. Would co2 effect the process? It is heavier than air and would displace the oxygen out of your container. Helping along the process or do you need the bacteria to work in 2 stages one where it uses the oxygen and then stage 2 the anaerobic cycle where it needs the lack of oxygen? Talk to some guys that brew beer if you need anything for us it's all about the bacteria. Cheers keep making great videos.

A digester works best between 90 and 105 F, and the bigger the better. If the temp is too low it will not work, if too hot it will kill the anaerobic bacteria. The other thing is that it needs to be a process that keeps oxygen out, and the resultant gasses are methane and CO2, then the material that is used up can be used for fertilizer in the garden. Also it is best to have a small heater, agatator, and pressure relief set at 2 to 15 psi but less than half the pressure that the container is rated for.

this one probably not but a larger one sure would: cube law, twice as big, twice the heat loss but 8times the methane production.
@thetraitor38528 жыл бұрын
Shouldn't be the heat loss 4x bigger?
@greenwitch6668 жыл бұрын
TheAllegiantTraitor no because as volume goes up the rate of heat loss goes down.

If you multiply a side of a cube by two, then it's surface should grow 4 times, so heat loss must also be 4 x higher. but volume increases 8 x so it makes up for it by making 8x as much heat

Hey Cody, just had an idea for a project and figured you might be interested, essentially its just making your own metal detector using a primary and secondary electromagnet, the primary electromagnet forces current through the piece of metal being detected causing it to have its own magnetic field, the secondary electromagnet is hooked up to a loudspeaker and when its magnetic field is disturbed by the metal, the loudspeaker will pick it up. I figured you might want to educate people on how they work and come up with some other practical use for this type of technology. Like if u want to see!

If they set their Cesius thermostat to 50 they will cook the poo and likely kill the bacteria they want. As values (of F) get closer to zero the estimate gets more accurate.

because most of the oxygen is dissolved into the water. to fully purge it I would ether need to boil the entire mix, pull a vacuum, or add chemicals to react with it. None of those options are very bacteria friendly.

Going to have to call BS on the premise there's more oxygen dissolved in the water than in the air. It would have to be virtually full for that to be the case.

Wouldn't it make a horrible smell whilst adding new more poop, also wouldn't the outflow of gass also make a bad smell?
@theCodyReeder8 жыл бұрын
Surprisingly no, it is well contained and once it is running properly the gas coming off it can have a sweet smell to it.
@TheMrSencor8 жыл бұрын
That sounds rather counter-intuitive

Cody'sLab never thought manure would smell sweet , and by the way humans don't produce methane are you sure cause my dad used to remove the porcelain from the royal throne.

Rabbit poop doesn't smell bad, the trash bag itself is what smells so bad, I don't know why, but it's the trash bag that smells bad.

Because Cody lives around it he doesn't notice any smell at all. But anyone who comes over would, even if they're too polite to say so.

Cody, couple of ideas maybe... You could use a submersible stock tank heater, they're higher wattage, but they will make the water considerably warmer, and you could always control it with your side thermostat. If you stick with the aquarium heater, I don't know what kind of efficiency gains you'd get with copper pipe for your dirty side of the heat exchanger. Not sure what the pH would be of that solution, so I don't know if the copper would end up killing the bacteria you're trying to promote. The other option would be the white nylon tubing like they use for feed lines for refrigerator ice makers. You can get it in various diameters and it's pretty cheap, and it takes a beating. I don't know how important agitation is to this, meaning does a stir once a day good, or should it be continuously moving. Could borrow some technology from the water purification world and make another service port on top, use a drill with a string seal and put a paint mixer paddle on the other end and dial the speed back so it's not screaming full speed and do a timer to let it run 5 minutes an hour or something. Love the chukars... I miss not hearing the Bob White quail we used to raise. Good video, looking forward to the results.

Why do you need nitrogen in a methane generator?
@polyjohn34258 жыл бұрын
Because the bacteria still need nitrogen to grow, even if it isn't necessary for the methane itself.

Neandercatz How would adding nitrogen-rich chemicals keep the oxygen levels low?
@neandercatz88778 жыл бұрын
I made a mistake. I thought that he added gaseous nitrogen to blanket the mixture. He actually added that batch because it would give more methane due to the carbon. The nitrogen compounds have no role.

Don't forget to keep the aquarium heater submerged in water almost to the top. If the glass is not fully submerged the heater will crack open. There is usually an indicator line on the side.

So this is a kind of bioreactor. I learnt about these in uni many years ago, very smart design this. Not sure how sensitive the bacteria is, but you might gain greater efficiency with a radial impeller of sorts. There is a bit of information out there on the different kinds and what might be more suited to an anaerobic environment like this.

You may be able to combine the heating requirement with a method to boost the methane production by using a small gasifier to bubble syngas into the generator. Do a search on "Rapid Methane Production from Synthesis gas: Bio-conversion at High cell loading".

Drew Black, your comment is ironic, considering The U.S. Has (officially) Been At War, for over 90% of its existence. American historian Christopher Kelly and British historian Stuart Laycock are the authors of “America Invades: How We’ve Invaded Or Been Militarily Involved With Almost Every Country on Earth.” They define “invasion” as “an armed attack or intervention in a country by American forces.” There are only three countries the all-mighty-usa has yet to invade. So, how is that for minding their own business?
@williamfinley787 жыл бұрын
Marty.R Woodcock my g why the fuck do you put not adjusting to the metric system to not advancing? Isn’t the United States one of if not the most technologically advanced countries in the world? And do you watch rick and morty by the way? Why bring war into a conversation about how you can’t keep your mouth shut about what system other counties use? You just sound butt hurt for really no reason.

Marty.R Woodcock the History of your country is poor, really, really poor compared to the History of the Great European Powers like Portugal, England, Spain and Italy, not to name more. Your country is a crying baby like you!! That wages war when it doesn't get candy!!! Just Grow Up you shithead.

To stop foaming an easy way is to add some silicone oil like simethicone. You can get liquid caplets of it it's called degas here and you are supposed to take them for cramps from wind. It poops the bubbles in your poop and you can just fart it out so that relieves the pressure. They are quite cheap and a lot cheaper than another antifoaming thing you can get, which is a small bottle of a tiny amount of it for an outrageous price to add to a mash when you distill it to stop foaming and bumping.
