Very fruitful thank you. Being a primary school teacher for lower grades, pupils need their self esteem to be developped and boosted. Coercive power will in the contrary lower themselves and they may think that they are not not capable. They can get demotivated and lose interest in learning or with school and have a bad opinion on their teacher. Thanks a lot :)

Thank you for the example on a professor. I was trying to see if being a college professor would fit into this context and you explained it clearly. Thanks so much!

Potential Consequences of the Use of Coercive Power The use of coercive power can have severe consequences, undermining democracy, eroding trust, and perpetuating cycles of violence. Erosion of Trust Coercive tactics can damage trust in government and institutions, leading to social fragmentation. Human Rights Violations The use of force or threats can result in human rights abuses, including arbitrary detention and torture. Political Instability Coercive power can contribute to political instability, creating a climate of fear and uncertainty. Cycles of Violence The use of force can escalate into cycles of violence, perpetuating conflict and suffering

Thank you very much, I found this video very usefull for my psy group dynamics course. The examples will probably stick with me quite well. I really envy your students though, if I don't deliver a printed version of my paper tomorrow at 12am, I'll get a 0 right away. Very certain of that! ^^

Thanks Alex, very useful. I agree with and use your point on holistic rewards/ coercive power in that the punishment and or reward is far more resonant when applied to the individual and their wants and needs. I am wondering how you do that in a larger organisation?
@alexanderlyon
@alexanderlyon 5 жыл бұрын
I think the key for a large organization is setting up a system that is consistent, so each person understands the clear rules of the game to get rewards and avoid punishment. But, for me, I'd emphasize the rewards across the board.

@@alexanderlyon Absolutely, my take away from this is rewards are more powerful than punishments.

Power or power abuse?
@alexanderlyon
@alexanderlyon 3 жыл бұрын
The traditional thinking on the types of power is that they can all be used and/or abused. It depends how several factors. For example, using coercive power (e.g., the threat of punishment through incarceration) to stop a would-be murder would be ethical. Using coercive power, on the other hand, to bully somebody into handing over their lunch money is an unethical abuse of power. Even referent power, for example, can be used for good or evil. The *_type_* of power being used is not connected to whether or not it is considered an abuse of that power. Coercive power sounds harsh but it may be the only type of power that works in some situations.
