Coffee & Riffs

9 жыл бұрын

Just five hours after leaving our previous shooting location at 5:00am, we find ourselves in Highland Park, California, at 5Starr Sound Labs with Juan Alderete. Juan is extremely kind and welcoming, with a wealth of knowledge of gear and history he happily shares. We enjoyed getting chill, looking forward to the next time we get to do it again.
Juan constructs his beautifully obliterated sound palette with the T.C. Electronic Ditto x2, Fairfield Circuitry Randy's Revenge, JHS Pedals Emperor, Green House Effects Stone Fish, Vintage EHX Micro Synth, Mantic Concepts - Vitriol EHX - Vintage Big Muff, rounding out the Chain with the wildly fun HoTone - Wally. The beastly Jerry Jones Bass VI helped too.
Check out Juan's pedal reviews at pedalsandeffects.com

Coffee and its Effects! I may not have liked the sounds but I respect this guy and his knowledge of gear. I was waiting on the noise to stop and hear him go into a sick distorted vibe riff.

I feel a great empathy for Juan and I believe he has a great amount of knowledge about his stuff. But I can't help feeling that his improvised lines sound... not good, at all. Even though I'm a subscriber for his channel and an admirer of his great basslines with the Mars Volta. Nevertheless, and i really believe it should be said, of course i will continue to follow his videos, since they are very entertaining and i always get the chance to learn something new from them. Good job, Juan. Thank you.

I've wondered about this but it seems he's being deliberate to show off the effect rather than his playing, sort of odd tho

After watching a bunch of overplayers Juan's uninspired lines, wether it be purposeful or not, is much appreciated. With Juan's videos you always get a accurate idea of what the pedal is. With the overplayers I mentioned not at all

Hey guys, I've got a quick gear question that I would love an answer to. What's the bridge humbucker on the surf-green Jazzmaster that reappears in several c&r videos? I love the tone of it and it might be nice to outfit my Jazzmaster with something similar.

www.gofundme.com/f/fundraiser-juan-alderete-brain-injury Juan Alderete - beloved husband, son, brother, uncle, friend, bandmate and cat dad - has had the privilege of connecting with music lovers around the world through his remarkable talent as the bassist in Marilyn Manson, The Mars Volta, Big Sir, Deltron 3030, Dr. Octagon, Vato Negro, Halo Orbit and Racer X in addition to lending his bass lines to music by Lil Peep, Jonwayne, Juliette Lewis, B'z and many more. On January 13, 2020, Juan was involved in a bicycle accident that-despite wearing a helmet and protective gear-left him with a serious type of Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) known as Diffuse Axonal Injury (DAI). He also suffered a fractured clavicle and spinal fracture. And as many of you fellow musicians and artists understand, there is no paid time off or sick time for this type of work. The journey Juan and his family are about to embark on is a marathon, not a sprint; it is a long road and we want to be able to tap some of the best and most passionate medical professionals who are experts on TBI patients and their potential for recovery. Physical, occupational and cognitive therapies are just some of what we'll need to pay for in the coming weeks and months. In-patient care and therapy, special medical equipment and assistance are other expenses we anticipate in the longer term. And while we help Juan focus on recovering, he will not be able to work but of course the goal is to get him back to playing music, and talking pedals on Pedals and Effects with his partner in crime, Nick. Because the world needs Juan on bass just as much as Juan needs to play bass.

I think there is a certain feeling that comes from the physical side of playing guitar -and from the tap shoe dance that comes with having so many pedals- that you don’t get with a synth, but I love both tbh
