Coffee Can Wren House

Simple construction Wren House using a coffee can or peanut butter jar for the house body. A section of 4" PVC sewer pipe can also be used. The simple construction means it is very easy to remove the body for cleaning out the old nests at the end of the year.

Great project and excellent video. Two suggestions for this or any wren house: 1. The entrance hole should be placed closer to the roof, with the top of the hole located 1" from the roof. Holes located closer to the interior floor have resulted in young nestlings exiting the house before they are ready to fledge. They may be killed by the fall or be too helpless to fend for themselves. 2. There should be at least a couple of small drainage holes drilled into the bottom/floor of the house to prevent water accumulation. Again, great video. Clear and concise without clutter or useless info so prevalent in a lot of these DIY projects.

I've made a lot of these since watching your video. Made templates for all the parts, circle cutting jig for the band saw. PVC sewer works great(off cuts from my dust collection system). I paint it with stone finish or similar rustoleum.. I'm able to bang 5 out in less than an hour using cedar fence planks from Lowes for about $2.50 each, they weather nicely. Wrens are very vocal birds and fun to watch. They manage to get sticks in there poking out any gap. Thank you for this video, it has made me appreciate the birds that reside on my property.

Nice looking and simple. The old one looked so antique I hated to see you throw it away. Wrens are one of my favorites. I almost had a pair nest on my apartment balcony this year but the Mocking Birds became an issue. Now I understand why a guy would write a book titled "To Kill A Mockingbird"!

Little Wrens are the only ones I know of who like these (with this opening size). A lot of birds seem to only favor a certain opening size so they can get in and not their predators. Also placement can be an issue... on the side of a house... hanging in a tree... on top of a post... in the shade and not the sun, etc. I am no expert so you would need to look around for different bird house designs. You're right - this would absolutely be a great grandpa & grandson project. I'm thinking cedar/redwood fence boards would be just about the perfect material for this project. wren houses are wonderful, we have several located around the place. we don't find nests in the houses but we find them on the top shelf in our shed, in a flower pot, nestled down in a bucket, in a hanging fern, and other odd places. If I leave my garage door open all day there I will find a wren nest. our main concern is that they nest and have babies.

You never know where a bird will decide to build. I've seen Wrens build in a boot or glove on the back porch and Robins build a nest on top of a split firewood rack out in the open (bad choice, that egg never survived). Hole size is important to certain birds... just big enough for them and not big enough for their predator. Many feel a perch is detrimental for the same reason (gives a predator something to hang onto). The Wrens will pack this bird house so full of woven sticks and twigs you will wonder how they can get to the nest, but they do. 1-1/8" hole is good for Wrens. I think they may hold up fairly well until the paint starts to fail. My dad built a shed ages ago with OSB, and it has only been starting to really disintegrate now, over 20 years later (after being neglected and not repainted in a very long time). I'm not sure about the glue joints, however.

Nice video. Thanks for sharing. I had a Wren build a nest in a large pork & beans can I had in my garage so I understand their proclivity for using cylindrical houses. The baby Wrens were happy and healthy and the cats could not get to it. I have built a couple of pork & bean can Wren houses since then, but I like this idea better. It took the birds two years to start using the can houses. Have they used your coffee can houses yet?

I had a pair use one of my houses the first time I put it up and my neighbor had a pair in his the first time as well. This year they stuffed mine full of twigs completely filling the can and blocking the hole. I have another one hanging on my house and they haven't touched it. They say if the have a second brood they often move to a different house. I also have heard it may take two seasons before they start using a house.

Robonza The screw eye is for hanging. I usually hang from a tree branch 6 to 8 feet off the ground spaced 20 to 50 apart.

Do you know how hot those cans can get in the summer? and with no ventilation or drainage they're just cookers for chicks. It looks really cool but metal is just not a good material for a nesting box. Of curse the bird will use it, they just don't know the chicks will probably die in the heat.

This was copied from an old birdhouse my neighbor had and the birds love it. That house raised at least two batches of birds every year. The ones made with a can are closed on the back and the ones where I used the section of pipe are open (a crack where it meets the wood ends) front and back. The birds seem to go out of their way to cram twigs and stuff in there until it is surprising they can still get in and out of the house (it is packed in there tight). The house has a large wood roof and wood on both ends so I doubt the metal or plastic container section is getting any hotter than the wood. It is not a good idea to hang a birdhouse where it will be in direct sunlight. Hanging in a shaded place, the house in part or whole, will not get hotter than ambient temperature. With the crack where the metal can end or both ends of the plastic pipe meet the wood ends, the drainage is total. When I used a plastic coffee can I drilled a few small holes where the can has ribs (which might catch water somehow) and those holes are on bottom when the house is reassembled after cleaning. These little birds seem to be fairly picky. Since they use it and come back to it, I have to assume they are happy with it. Thanks for watching! Please Subscribe.

I understand, i guess the key here is the wood roof and the location of the house, away from direct sunlight. but looking at your video again i see you have large PVC pipe outside of the can in which case it would make the metal can unnecessary since pvc is much more durable and cooler material... so are you using PVC?

What is the tool with the handle that you are using to push the wood with???

That is a push block with foam rubber under the plastic handle. The foam gets a good grip on the wood and the handle keeps your hand away from the saw blade.
