Aww Sue, you didn’t judge the situation based on the accent. Your mind and intuition quickly processed everything all at once. That’s not racism, that’s just putting all the signs together.

It's very kind of you to say that, and I'd really like to think that my reaction was based on the situation and not any preconceived notions about South Asian people in general. But I still feel I need to look at my reaction and consider the possibility that I am less inclined to give the benefit of the doubt to someone simply because of their accent. It's a scary thought... 😱

I'm so sorry for your poor mother. Once those scammers get their hands on the phone number of a vulnerable person, they will call again and again. @suemeonyoutube The sad part is I will be sitting there listening to the call, when I realize from the conversation is a scam, they will already have one more piece of information. Now they know her name, her address, her phone number where she banks. She's given them everything but her social security number and account number. I'll pick up the phone and tell the person they better not call back and block the number. It's a full time job.

So glad you helped that woman. I used to listen to a lot of scambaiter channels (cheap entertainment). I once wasted 4 hours of a scammer's time while I was cooking and baking. He had me on the phone, thinking I was following his instructions to drive to a nearby Walmart to buy several Play Store Gift Cards. Every so often he'd ask where I was and remind me to keep my phone on and not tell any clerk or anyone that asked what I was doing. I was going about my baking and had him on speaker and every few minutes he's ask what was taking so long. I told him that store didn't have very many so was driving to a different location. I knew what he was doing and my sole aim was to see how long I could keep him on the line because that was time he wasn't actually scamming someone else. About 3.5 hours in (and after I made 2 cakes and was working on dinner) I told him I knew what he was doing. He was angry but then I decided to talk to him. I asked why he was doing this and to my surprise he admitted he knew it was a crime, but the village in India that he came from had no opportunities for young people to make money and he wanted to study computer processing. He said he lived with his mother and 4 sisters and they all needed to work. I spoke to him in a non threatening way and while I doubt he gave up his "job" we had a good talk. He said he worked in a call center that employed about 400 people and he has been through one raid where the police came to shut them down and many people ran off so as not to be arrested, including him. He said it scared him but he still had no prospects to make an honest living so he still does this, but it's extremely stressful. Now I have no doubt that I changed this young man's mind and he may still be doing this. I am both disgusted at the crime but I also see why people that lack legal resources do what they do. Talking to this kid humanized him to me enough to not cast blame on every caller with his accent, but I am always vigilant when on the phone. So I do indeed under stand your thoughts about feeling badly about a certain segment of people, based on their accent and where they are calling from. It's hard to NOT feel like you're being racist. It's a crime, for sure. But I don't think it would be that proliferate if people had opportunity. I'm glad you spotted this and stopped it. Thousands of elderly and vulnerable people are victims and yes, the majority of the scams originate in these certain countries. Don't feel badly. You put it all together despite the accent. That doesn't make you a bad person, just someone that is more aware.

You did a very brave, instinctive action, Sue. I'm 100% sure that it was the scenario that prompted you to act - i.e. elderly woman standing in front of the gift cards rack being coerced to buy them by the person (of whatever nationality) on the phone. I'm hoping that I would have had the courage to do the same. Elderly people have to look out for each other - there are so many scammers around. One day, recently, my husband returned home alone in broad daylight. He is obviously in his 70s and was fumbling with his house keys. A "roofer" called out to him from the other side of the road and said he would quote to clean moss from the roof (when it didn't need doing). My husband told him that we have our own roofing contractors. This guy was very very persistent, but finally left. On leaving, he said "I hope you die of cancer". This shook us up somewhat, but we warned our neighbours as we had seen the van they were using, and got the name with a mobile phone number, but no proper trading address or premises when we looked it up on the internet. My motto, beware of roofers!! Also, get your keys ready before you get to your home.

Hey, if it looks like a duck and walks like a duck - it's a duck, accent or no accent. I have grown wary of people calling me on my landline where I do not see the number who is calling, and I have changed my responses: if it's a long pause, and then an accent, then I know the call is coming from another country (I am in Canada), if it's my cable service, I keep telling them "no thanks" . I have learned not to say "yes" because that word can be copied and applied to a scam where my voice says yes. We all have to learn to be vigilant and we have to do what you did, Sue, and that is to help someone in a vulnerable situation. You were her "guardian angel" that day. Good on you!

Sue Context is important. You saw an elderly lady at the craft store looking at gift cards while on speaker phone. She appeared on edge & was being told what to do by the person on the phone. You could clearly hear the individual bossing her about what to purchase. With just the above info I'm thinking scammer. Upon hearing an accent I would have been 99% positive it was a scam. Context is important. Ask yourself ''If the event occurred exactly as you recounted except the accent was French Canadian or a Southern Georgia drawl would you have intervened.?'' I would have. If she said she was speaking to her nephew about a gift card for his daughter, I would have been greatly relieved. This elderly lady did not say anything to aleviate your concern. What she told you is a classic con used by predators the world over. You are a good neighbor to your community💖

My formerly very bright mil had someone call and say she needed to give a credit card number; it was either Medicare or health insurance. She gave him her credit card number. After hanging up, she got nervous about it and called my husband. My husband immediately went to the bank. $150 had already been charged. My mil has dementia. At this stage, she is more absent-minded than out of touch. We had discussed not giving out information to unsolicied callers many times. I think she is on a hit list because all day long, her phone rings, and it is someone wanting to scam her. Her land line allows blocking numbers, but they just spoof another number. We have reported to the "do not call" website but that is a useless cost to the taxpayer because nothing ever gets done.

Perhaps your mother-in-law might want to change her phone number. Hi Sue, I honestly don't think you need to worry about your conflict. The whole situation in its entirety put up spidey senses. If you had merely passed her without hearing any voice on the phone, you would not have been alerted. If you had heard ANY kind of accent or none on phone, you would have been alerted. You have thoroughly researched these scams, so you are obviously more attuned to them and wired for scammers now. That's a good thing. Just because it happened to be South Asian accent doesn't mean you are becoming bigoted at all. It could have been ANY accent, and you would have responded the same. Once again, because of the entire situation picture. Please don't beat yourself up over this. We have been forcefully fed that rampant racism is lurking in every corner. That's simply false and cruelly misleading. I thank you for helping the lady and putting out this message. Warm wishes to you and Oddi. ❤ ❤️✌️🇺🇸🇨🇦🙏🤗

Hi Sue and Audie! As the Caucasian mother of an Asian child (who is now an adult), I am very tuned in to racist comments and behaviors. I did not detect anything of the kind when I was listening to your video. Perhaps it’s because I know you well enough to understand where you were coming from. When you heard the conversation the lady in the store was having, you relied on your powers of discernment to make a judgment on what you should do. Don’t beat yourself up, you did a very good thing. Most people “mind their own business” often even if it’s to the detriment of others but you did a noble thing. I’ve watched your videos on scammers and the experience you shared was very useful to me when I recently received a ridiculous scam email attempting to blackmail me for money. Well done for being on the ball. In spite of lots of publicity people are still taken in by scammers. You're not being racist about the scammer's accent, you're just being practical. In the UK many scammers are east European, African or Indian/Pakistani. That's not a racist remark, it's factual, there are many scammer call centres in those countries. Many of the scams here revolve around telling the victim that the caller is the police and the victim's bank account has been compromised. The victim is instructed to move their money into a different account that the "police" has access to for "safety" reasons. The rest you can guess. I've had many scam phone calls, fortunately I recognise them and simply put the phone down

‘Tiss the season-even for scammers. You did a great thing. Young or old can get caught up in “if it’s too good to be true, it usually is.” And, most of us know,”you can’t judge a book by its cover “. Some “covers “ however, have been used and abused-that’s how we gained our knowledge. I don’t see racism involved. I see a woman that has all her facilitates and shared her knowledge and wisdom. And kindness. Happy Holidays to all.

Best wishes!

There's a special place in hell for someone who would do that to a 90-year-old man. I know that scam - the scammers tell the grandparent that their grandchild is in jail, or has been in an accident... That's hideous! Bad enough to steal, but to frighten someone out of their wits, too? Despicable. 😠

But it was late at night and I wasn't quite awake - and I ship all the time for a personal business. Luckily I stopped to think. I notice that young moms with kids need extra eyes. I've spotted a few almost leaving groceries or parcels behind, as their attention gets yanked hither n yon in a nanosecond. Or the lil darlin' tosses their stroller plush to the floor. Or a lady walks away from a cart, leaving her purse in the caddy. It's a good feeling to be even a silent momentary caretaker for another person. My lovely Gram would say that God puts us where we're needed, when we're needed.

Sue, what separates us from the animals is (not just our ability to accessorize) but our ability to care for another, including the most vulnerable. One of my best friends works at the local post office .... since Canada Post got into the business of wiring money a few years back ... she has seen so so many (mostly older) folks being scammed. Wiring money to their boyfriend or girlfriend whom they've never met etc. She has a good heart like you and tries asking them gently probing questions about where the money is being sent. Many have lost everything to the scammers. Some come in weekly or monthly and have RECORD BOOKS of all the transactions they are sending not only to the person (scammer) but also their family members. To make a long story short, the clerks do try to help but at the end of the day it's up to the person. And do we think a huge corporation like Canada Post is going to actively try to stop people from wiring money EVEN WHEN THEY KNOW it's a scam? Not a chance. They are making millions and they don't give a damn who is being scammed. Thank God for people like you, Sue.

Sue, so happy to hear you helped that poor lady. After my relative was contacted again and again, we wondered HOW do these callers maintain the frantic urgency and scare tactics. (i.e. desperately saying Don't hang up!!! Don't hang up!!) I mean, it can be relentless. We are learning that some of these "callers" are "held" as part of human (labor) trafficking operations, with severe consequences if they don't meet quotas, thus the desperation. It's pretty dark.

Bless your heart; you earn your breath every day. Each and every day. Thanks for sharing a reminder to be aware and mindful of our neighbors and what happens in our communities. Sue, I am a bit older than you - but dear WE are "elderly" we are just competent elderly - LOL. I do the same thing, call people are likely younger than me "old people". I got that call from Publisher's Clearing House a few years ago, on my landline, they insisted I call them back on my cell - I refused. They told me which store I had to go to in order to purchase the cards. They said their people were waiting just 10 minutes away with the balloons and the cameras. The idiot then said he was in Blue Springs, which is 120 miles away from me. No way they could get to my house in 10 minutes. I told them I had to go to the bathroom and get dressed, he expected me to stay on the phone with him and I said like hell you are not going to the bathroom with me. He was supposed to call me back - of course he did not. They are very upbeat and describe what we have seen on TV well. I hope there is a special place in a HOT land down under for these people, preying on easily influenced people to make money. Good for you for stepping up and butting in to save that woman. Here is the thing, why do older people seem to think they cannot say NO and have to do what other's tell them, especially when it doesn't make sense. I understand the lure of a new car, I was in desperate need of money when they called, but my common sense told me it could not be authentic.
