Great video Tom, credit to you buddy your year sixes must have really enjoyed that day. Other teachers, too I would guess it's something that should be more available in schools. Nice meerasham what a great way to relax with a nice strong coffee in beautiful woodland. One of my favorite pipes is a Calabash with the meerschaum bowl. It's a stunner something a dear friend gifted me. Sadly he is no longer with us. Enjoy your trip im looking forward to seeing your adventure. Atvb, Garry

Nice. I have been thinking about getting an animal skin for my woods trips. What do you have? Where did you get it? What do you use it for? Are you worried about it getting damp if it sits on the forest floor? Would you recommend it? Sorry for all the questions, I'm intrigued!

I use a goat, deer and a reindeer hide depending on the trip. The large reindeer hide I use as a roll matt. The others I use in different ways e.g as a sit pad, back support in a rucksack, soft cover for a jacket to make a pillow, to lay out gear or firelighting materials. I just make sure to dry them out properly when I get back from a trip. They do get dirty and can get damp but I think it adds to the charm. I have dried one out before in smoke over a fire. If you're worried put a small ground sheet under them. I love carrying a hide as a little luxury item. They also just make a camp feel right and a bit old school if that makes any sense. Just my 2 cents on the subject. Cheers for watching, Tom.

Not sure teaching kids how to lite fires without a lighter or matches hope they don’t go on to be the next generation of Pyromaniac’s for your sake I’m surprised the head of school even allowed you to show the let alone letting them do it themselves

I am going to respectfully disagree. A large part of education is about teaching children respect and responsibility as well as safety. An emphasis on the danger of fire as well as the legality, responsibility and safety was a large part of the lesson. All went away with a better understanding of the danger of fire as well as the real importance to treat it with respect. Additionally, none could make the char cloth without help/further lessons and this is imperative for this method of firelighting to work, as is the steel which none of them own. Educating is better than leaving people ignorant of the safety, responsibility and dangers. That's how most out of control fires are caused - by people not respecting or considering their actions due to a lack of proper education. Outdoor education is important and I stand by it. Teach people the skills and show them how to use them safely and respectfully. Teach leave no trace, explain the impact of poor or improper use and people will be better off.

@@BackGardenBushcraft You can teach responsibility respect and the dangers without having to allow the kids to actually try it. As for then not having char cloth probably correct but you and I both know there are lots of things that can be used to start fires and I'm sure that if they decide to start a fire they will use whatever they can I was just saying it appears to me rather silly to teach them how to start fires without matches and lighters

@@flogsometogs4539 you are entitled to your opinion but I have to disagree. I realise nothing I say will sway you on this, but here are my last thoughts on it. If they wanted to light a fire for nefarious reasons, then they would, matches and lighters are easy to get hold of and much easier to use than an ancient form of fire lighting that requires specific skills and equipment, not to mention much practice. They only got a short time making sparks with the flint and steel (none actually blew a bundle to flame). I believe that exposure to risk and the knowledge of how to do things safely and responsibly is important for development - otherwise we are raising a generation of sheltered children who have never experienced anything first hand and who are then likely to idolise the dangerous and use them irresponsibly. The same goes with teaching teenagers about using knives as tools - in my opinion teaching them how to use and respect them properly makes them less likely to see them as weapons and understand the responsibility of using something dangerous. Lack of education and exposure can be dangerous - in my opinion more dangerous than a controlled and thorough education. I want to encourage interest in the outdoors, in bushcraft, in learning and in history. Giving hands on experience with things is the only real way to share an interest and if it is done properly it really contributes to and enhances a well rounded education. Much less harmful than things children see on a screen every day. Just my 2 cents.

We live in a society that is so risk averse, it is little wonder kids don’t understand the risks of fire, knives or simply being outside. Letting them try these things in a controlled environment with skilled tuition and supervision is the only way for youngsters to understand how to do these things in a safe manner and what the risks truly are. If we shut these sorts of experiences down, tuition becomes just another class where the teacher stood at the front and said “Blah blah blah”. Tom is to be congratulated on delivering a class that every child will remember long in to the future, his headteacher is to be applauded for having the foresight to allow such an excellent educational experience to go ahead with the right protections in place.
