COFFEE OPINION - The Americano Must Be Stopped

There are a ton of espresso based drinks, and as much as baristas want to wax poetic about their differences, the truth is they really aren't that different. They are made of up espresso, and one of two other options; milk or water. In today's opinion piece I talk about why the Americano and the Long Black should be interchangeable regardless of their preparation as they make the same exact drink.

I love coffee nerds (and am one), but the "water or coffee first" question is another debate (like whether a donut shaped extraction is bad, or which direction to puck rake) that occurs when people are too far down the rabbit hole. A simple blind taste test would settle the matter by showing nobody can reliably tell the difference.

Here in Australia I was taught a little differently on how to do a long black. Instead of an espresso you have a ristretto. You loose the intensity you get from the ristretto and gain more texture. But all up to the individual

For me, it's about taste/strength of the coffee and the size of drink I want to make. In the morning, with breakfast, I like a bigger drink that will last me the length of whatever I'm eating, so I will pull 36g of espresso (from 18g of coffee) onto about 185ml water. In the afternoon, I'm usually interested in something quicker and stronger-tasting, so I do the same with 115ml water. To each their own, of course, but I really love how crema looks when the shot goes on top of the water. It's part of what makes the espresso ritual so satisfying for me, so I always pour water first.

Oh hi 👋🏻 welcome to my comment section. I feel like I should clarify a couple points made in this video. To start, I should say it’s slightly tongue in cheek, hence the title and the thumbnail. It’s not an anti-Americano video, and I’m not saying one is better than the other, quite the contrary actually. What I am trying to get across is the way we could endlessly argue these minimal differences in many coffee drinks, but the Americano and the Long Black seemed like the best way to illustrate that point because of how similar they are. TL;DR In the end it doesn’t matter what you call it, or how you make it, as long as you enjoy it.

Thats the risk of clickbait. Not everyone will invest time to watch entire video or read your description. You get traction to your video, but it risks getting commented (or disliked) by people that get triggered from the title. Tbh I do think your video will be anti Americano, thankfully I check your description and pinned comment first LMAO. All in all I agree with your opinion though as its also confused me af why both Americano and Long Black so similar. But, its like debating soccer vs football. Its all depends on the culture where that drink popular in. Keep making video bro, its so nice to watch. Hope your channel will be even bigger and spreading more coffee knowledge. Bless you.

This is wide problem when it comes to coffee conversations online . They're people that think their opinions about making a coffee drink is the only right way. I'll have my Americano my way and you can have it your way, all that matters is we both personally enjoy our drinks. They are guidelines when making coffee but not hard rules. Hadn’t heard of the term “long black” until fairly recently. I’ve got too many happy memories of ordering Americanos. Iced Americano was my go-to drink for ages at (chain name redacted), or local shops. Usually I’d order “extra cold.” Some of that, however, was that it was typically cheap. Iced latte? 4.50. Iced americano? 3.00, but I had to add the cream myself from the pitcher.

I need some help/advice, I can’t really find the recipe for an iced latte. Do someone who works in a cafe or knows about it tell me how much milk for a 40g (1:2 ratio) espresso ? Also is there any difference between iced latte and iced cappuccino? I’ve seen some shops offering both but I do not understand.. maybe the amount of milk changes
@felicityfoo6240
@felicityfoo6240 2 жыл бұрын
Honestly, do whatever you think tastes best. For a 40g shot, it would probably be around 150ml milk and 100g ice. I'd recommend adding as much ice as possible if you'll be drinking your iced latte over a long period of time since the less temperature difference between the ice and the coffee, the slower it melts, which means your drink gets diluted less. However, do it the way you like it. I'm a barista who orders iced lattes with less ice sometimes. It really just depends. As for the difference between lattes and cappuccinos, it's the amount of foam. Lattes have less, cappuccinos have more

I think there might be two conversations to be had. Is there a “correct” way to make a Long Black and also where does it “fit”, what does a LB offer when compared to other similar style coffees? Then again maybe it’s just a cup of coffee with hot water nuff said 😂. For better or worse this was my entry point into serious coffee, I wonder what my tastes would be if my entry had been a pour-over etc.

I tend to like the shorter form long blacks, since there's only so much water I personally find worthwhile before it overwhelms the espresso rather than just "opening it up". I often tell my trainees who are just learning to taste espresso to add a bit of water to the 'spro if they're having trouble parsing what they're tasting due to the intense nature of espresso, compared to filter coffee.

I had no idea this was a debate lol, they have been synonymous to me, and I only changed what I called them based off where I was in the world. I love my watery espresso. I like water first and maybe there's a debate there, but same drink I think, just preference in what you want to bring out, I feel water first retains some of the brighter/acidic notes. To each their own.

I pull boiling water from my HX Bezzera into a clean milk jug before grinding the beans (so that it cools down a bit). I grind the beans, pull the espresso, and finally, carefully, without destroying the crema I add water into the espresso. Depending on the mood or the coffee I add more or less water. An Ethiopia is lighter so I add less water, my favorite blends are longer. It is usually my 11 o clock coffee or/and my evening coffee, with my first coffee on the day being a cappuccino (not a latte). A proper Americano , is water first, but to me, it tastes sour (er). Greetings from Athens, Greece!

Up front: I don‘t fancy americanos or long blacks much at all. I much rather just brew a filter coffee instead. But that aside: I always thought a long black is a longer espresso (lungo shot) or the american name for café crème while americano to me is a double shot of espresso with hot water. The question of water first or last, I believe, is just personal preference. Some people like crema, others argue against crema, because to them it is bitter and thus water last makes more sense for them.

Hey Spro! I drink an Americano on the way to work out on the mornings I work out, as it keeps me from vomiting up milk at my gym, and my process is followed thusly: Pull a double into a small espresso measuring cup, and pour it into a preheated 8 oz insulated travel vessel. Top it off with 130 degree tap water, using the first bit to rinse the measuring cup into my travel vessel, and enjoy. My go-to drink on days I don't work out is a cappuccino, where I pull the shots into a cappuccino cup, then add nicely steamed/foamed milk/cream/eggnog depending on my preference, creating lovely latte art (is it cappuccino art in this instance?) in the process. The key takeaway phrase in this entire comment is "depending on my preference." Enjoy!

I mean americano is the original name because it was invented to cater to the tastes of American soldiers in Italy during WWI. Due to the fact that espresso was not a thing in the US their palates were not used to the richness of espresso. So I prefer the original name due to its historical context also because it shares a name with a favorite cocktail of mine (equal parts sweet vermouth and Campari). Also due to being a diabetic the americano is my go to with its strong flavor, but nonexistent sugar content.

What is intriguing for me is the name of the beverage. Coming from Latin America, we are used to drink mainly drip coffee. It sounds to me that the americano is a way to mimic drip coffee. Now a days coffee shops cold easily offer drip coffee. It would be cheaper for them and would arguably be more "americano" than the americano. I may be confused why people like this drink. But for me it was always just a way of getting something close to a drip coffee in Europe.

Another “possible” distinction between the two, is the ‘type’ of shot being pulled. I have heard, that being from Australia/New Zealand, (and their proclivity for pulling ristrettos for drinks such as the flat white), I’ve heard a long black being made with hot water and a ristretto shot (vs a ‘regular’ shot). I don’t know how true this is; but something I’ve definitely heard.

Honestly I add water first because I use a Decent Espresso DE1xl and if I do the espresso first, then add the water, the water stream splashes coffee on the back of the machine and I have to clean it. If I add the water first, the espresso dripping into the water doesn't splash and make a mess. So Water first because I am lazy and don't want to clean.

Idk man, these are drinks I don't enjoy that much so I never experimented at home yet I associate long blacks, which I usually have when travelling to AU/NZ as being significantly better (to me) than the usual americanos I have in other places of the world. This could be 100% bias on my part, or maybe they do the ratios of coffee to water differently? Not sure.

nz'er here, where I work if you ask for a long black you get a 150ml coffee, if you ask for an Americano you get a 250ml drink (emulating a filter/plunger strength). both are pulled onto the hot water to retain the crema, I too prefer a long black, as you keep more of the flavour and texture :)

OK SPRO Bro - Help me out with this: "What is this I am drinking? " I have made a few Latte - I have made a few Cappuccinos, and of course they are milk based drinks made with Espresso as you have stated. What I make a drink that I just am passionate for is what I call a "Blond Americano". I first pull a double shot espresso in two single shot glasses. (One of them will be added to a second drink shortly). I heat for 30 seconds in a microwave about 3 ounces of whole milk, pour in 1 single shot espresso, and add 202 degree Fahrenheit water in the 10 oz Coffee Mug, slowly stirring as the water fills. I do not know what you call it - but the taste is heavenly.

Sure, it probably doesn't matter, and I'm not much for heated debates. At the same time sweating the small stuff is part of what has got the coffee available to us these days to be so good! Maybe we can keep the debate going, and just recognize that the conservation is more important than the conclusions? Definitely into keeping it merry, to Christmas and beyond! Thanks for the fun video. :)

Double shot in the cup, followed with water... I thought I was making myself a long black... and I've been drinking americanos all this time!?!?! Mind = blown! (It may take me some time to come to terms with this - I'm an Australian, not an American)

Honestly for me, the amount time it takes to make a long black or americano and the final product itself, i'd rather just make a strong cup of filter coffee.

Oh man. When I saw the title of this video I thought you were against Americanos.. but I love Americanos. Glad it's just the name. I do water first. I feel like it gives the cup a little more time to stabilize temperature wise than adding the scolding hot water after.

I'm on the other side, disappointed 😂 I rather prefer a pour over or a Espresso / Cappuccino. What type of coffee do you use for Americano ?

@snowboarder92120 2 жыл бұрын
@@daniel635biturbo I just started roasting my own beans. I think they are Robusta beans and I enjoy medium roasts. I was really into light roasts but they have become too acidic. I usually drink a cappuccino and then an americano each morning. One decaf and one regular. I never really get the consistency with a pour over and I find it frustrating. It also takes longer to brew. Hbu? What type of beans are you using now?
@daniel635biturbo
@daniel635biturbo 2 жыл бұрын
@@snowboarder92120 Only lighter roasts generally Kenya or Ethiopian beans for Pour over, and slightly darker often blends for espresso. For espresso Decaf I can only get it to work with darker roasts and Arabica / Robusta blends. I often also blend some Decaf and ordinary beans, If I'm having coffee in the afternoon. So pretty similar coffee types I guess. But I haven't tested darker roasts and Americano when I think of it...

I personally make mine water first and then shots, usually in a smaller “long black” size but I’m not gonna fight anyone that says/does otherwise. You want a 20oz americano with shots then water? Go for it. What’s that, you want 2oz of spro poured over 2oz of water? Have a blast

In Austrian coffee culture we have the "Verlängerten" which should equal a long black...but most Cafes serve a Lungo with a little bit more water going through the coffee...be aware! Only some good Cafes serve an espresso with hot water on the side to create your own "Verlängerten"

I spent a month drinking straight robusta espresso and had a long black from a cafe this weekend. I think I have gotten too used to the full flavour and long blacks taste too watery to me. This is funny to me because when I stopped drinking flat whites because I became vegan and didn't see the point in a plant milk coffee drink I eased myself in on long blacks and they also tasted watery to me then but in a different way until I got used to it.
@auralistank

I also didn't answer the question. I think you should just add 'o's to the end of the word espresso to indicate how much water should be added. Call each 'o' 25ml of added water.
@auralistank
@auralistank 2 жыл бұрын
Or make each 'o' a ratio. Espresso is just espresso, espressoo doubles the output with extra hot water, espressooo triples it, so on and so forth.

Long black and Americano are just weird names, not that the names of the others espresso beverages are really any more logic. I just call it a diluted espresso because that is fundamentally what it is. It doesn’t really matter how you make it but for effect You can brew it into water, but often I find that to be a mess, so prefer the other way around and then stir it.
