Awhile back, Cody Wanner challenged people to go out to a local coffee shop and film some b-roll. Challenge accepted. I also talk a little bit about how to shoot cinematic b-roll like this and give some tips for beginners. Really hope you like it! :)

@clarkeemalarkee
@clarkeemalarkee 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Vasa! So there’s a lot of daylight in the cafe through windows, but it was a very big space, so I also brought two compact fluorescent fixtures just to create some direction to the light. It’s mostly noticeable in the section where they are on the espresso machine (I put a big light just off frame pointing at them to emulate window light). In the roasting section the light was just high up and generally pointing at the roaster for a little exposure bump.

I have to shoot some coffee shop broll for my job, but the problem is that our camera is a heavy 16 inch Sony field camera with a huge lens lol. I'm just trying to envision what I can shoot on a tripod and what I could attempt to shoot handheld with such a heavy camera.

@clarkeemalarkee
@clarkeemalarkee 4 жыл бұрын
Hey Reyland! Thanks for the comment! Honestly I do not own or ever shoot on GoPro - and it would be tough to do this style of b-roll simply because of the lack of focal length options. GoPro's are just WIDE, so it's tough to get different looks. The best advice I could suggest is to try and change the viewpoint as much as possible - different angles and distances from the subject to help keep everything interesting.

Dude love this video man! KILLER B-ROLL! Question....do you use manual or autofocus when filming? That is one thing I have been struggling with on WHEN to use manual focus. Thanks, man!
@clarkeemalarkee
@clarkeemalarkee 5 жыл бұрын
I used to preach manual focus for everything...and then I bought the 5D Mark IV and I became a believer in autofocus. My recommendation is you get to know your camera and figure out which one works best for you. I use autofocus about 90% of the time nowadays - but there are situations where I can’t or don’t. For example - macro shots I almost always to manually.

@clarkeemalarkee
@clarkeemalarkee 4 жыл бұрын
For B-Roll purposes I would go with the 24-70. Gives you more options and different looks, plus a more shallow depth of field at the 70 end. I only use my 16-35 for wides and the vlogging shots.

Loved the video. Awesome job. You mentioned in another video about how you were preferring the Kalita wave over the v60. I have been using a v60 for years and always find it more Astringent or bitter no matter what ratio or grind I use. My aeropress blows the v60 out of the water with clarity. Is this what your experiencing as well? I feel like I’m the odd one out that does like the v60. Thinking I might need to get a kalito!
@clarkeemalarkee
@clarkeemalarkee 5 жыл бұрын
Thank you Brent! Yup! Because the V60 is a classic pour over method, the coffee and water spend the least amount of time together as the cup brews. This brings out tons of flavor in the coffee so you can really taste the bean, but brings a lot of bitterness and acidity with it. Some people like high acidity coffees...I am not one of them. Therefore, when dealing with an acidic coffee to begin with like a natural Ethiopia for example, I prefer to use the Kalita Wave which is closer to a full immersion method (Aeropress). I would definitely try out a Kalita, it's a nice balance of getting the flavors from a pourover without the intense acidity. Get the Kalita Wave 185, that's the classic size.

Great B-roll! A newbie here, what frame rate, shutter speed/bit rate do you use to slow or fast forward a video this smoothly? Or generally, at what frame rate should you shoot your b-rolls in? Is the video edited and rendered on a 24p timeline?
@clarkeemalarkee
@clarkeemalarkee 4 жыл бұрын
cris chan hey Cris. This video is a mix between 24fps and 60fps (slowed down to 24) footage. Yes it’s on a 24p timeline (or 23.976 to be exact). Shutter speed should always be double your frame rate (so at 24fps, shutter speed is 1/50). For speed ramping it doesn’t really matter how you shot it, it just needs to be smooth so it doesn’t look super jerky when you speed it up. Lmk if you have any other questions!

I loved this video!!!!! I am a college trained photographer/videographer by nature and I have a very small bit of critique if you're interested. if not by all means just quit reading lol. It is in your first B roll shots. You focus mainly on a guy. You are telling the story of his day as a professional coffee roaster throughout his process. It was all going splendidly when @ 3 minutes and 35 seconds, without seeing the face of another human being, we are presented with a hand that has blue fingernail polish. In the minds of a viewer, without proper establishing shots, I assumed that this was the hand of the guy you've been following the whole time and I was thrown out of the story and suddenly became very perplexed by why this guy would be painting his fingernails blue. lol It's totally fine for him to paint his nails blue but it took me out of the scene completely until we saw his hands without the fingernail polish. It is a very odd thing but extremely important when dealing with people that you communicate, even if for 1 second that you're introducing a new character. Otherwise we as viewers will assume, shot from shot that we are only focused on the main subject. I hope this doesn't sound rude or anything. I may be way off base. Did anyone else notice this? Thank you for the video!
@clarkeemalarkee
@clarkeemalarkee 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Reed! I have my Bachelors in Cinema and Television Arts as well. I 100% agree with your critique. Unfortunately, sometimes you just don't have all the shots you need and for a project like this, where I spent two full days shooting it and was paid nothing, it's tough to invest in an extra day and plan time with that girl just to get her establishing shot, so I had to roll with it as is because I didn't have any shots of him doing the espresso prep. I ran it by a few of my friends and they all said it wasn't super noticeable, so, for a simple KZbin vlog I wasn't that worried about it. My professional work is much more planned out and well executed. Thanks for your comment though! (Also, sorry the reply took so long, KZbin marked this as spam for whatever reason so I didn't see it until now)

Now my question - what settings do you shoot b-roll in? Everything in 120fps HD? Or do you mix it up? Anything in 4k, I guess at 60fps? Did you use any additional lighting or just go with what was there? Would love to know. Thanks from your newest subscriber :-).

Hi Steve! Thank you so much for your kind words. For this video I shot everything in 1920x1080 at 60fps. I typically find 120fps is too slow for most things unless it's VERY fast or you're going for a very intentional look. My camera doesn't do 4K 60, otherwise I'd probably use that, haha. Recently (not in this video), I've been experimenting with shooting all of my b-roll in 24fps instead of using slow motion and I actually love it, but it does make handheld no longer an option.
@lettochfilms
@lettochfilms 5 жыл бұрын
@@clarkeemalarkee thanks Clarke. Most helpful. I started to dabble with a coffee making video today (1080 at 120fps) but I can see that could be too much slo-mo. I have the GH5 so might do some at 4k 60fps and see how the 1080 & 4k footage mixes - never tried that before and wonder if the 1080 stands out too much against the 4k. Your 1080 footage looks superb though. Anyway glad I found your site. Will enjoy looking at more. And a huge thanks for the reply.

@@clarkeemalarkee Heh Clarke, finally got around to making that coffee b-roll video. An interesting challenge given I had to film myself making a coffee and had to keep everything close in with a shallow depth of field (because our kitchen's not the best studio). Learned loads though, like nailing white balance helps LOL, and when filming others doing stuff it's easier to be creative with shots, angles and moves. Glad I had a go though and loads to learn. Would have been better if the footage was a bit more bright, and if you used different song.

Thanks for your comment. I agree, I wish I had more lights and more time to dial in each shot. Unfortunately since this was just for fun I had to work through it pretty quick. Picking songs has always been tough for me, I’m sorry you didn’t like this one!
