How do you think they made drive shafts go around corners to power the various wings of factory complexes using one central steam engine or water wheel in the basement even prior to the Civil War? Right angle gear drives date back to before when Archimedes improved them around 400 BCE though crude examples existed prior to that and the differential as we know it automotively dates back to around 1810. Wind mills and water mills regardless of the work they performed had angle drive gears for many centuries in order to transmit power around corners without belts that wore out quickly and snapped. The big coffee grinders were often mounted in general stores and had large flywheels so they could quickly grind coffee for customers who didn't want to grind their own and move on to the next customer. Some had two sets of cranks so two clerks could work together and grind coffee faster than the two of them cranking the single operator grinders. And yes they were made to last a lifetime or so and be handed down to the next generation quite unlike modern stuff where they put corn starch and other powdered organic materials inside plastic items so they will get brittle, crack and fail more quickly. Why don't you just make Miners coffee. Just pour the grounds right on the water instead of a filter. When it boils...the grains settle to the bottom.
