50 year old planes...they ain't what they used to be.

Amazing how many directions airframes have spread out and the innovations I have seen in my lifetime of 64 years. It's no wonder building models of planes captured my imagination as a kid and held it to seniorhood.

Excellent synopsis Max, and the U.S. Air Force should officially be designated the "Old Age Home" of operational aircraft, still using five types in front-line service that flew before 1960!

Strength of their design with room for improvement over the years. A UPT classmate flew the C-23 Sherpa (Short 330) out of Zweibrucken using the callsign “POKEY” for a short…(nyuck, nyuck, nyuck)…time before transferring to the C-5. He flew into Upper Heyford and gave me a tour of bird with a coffee pot. I reciprocated with a F-111E tour with coffee thermos holders. An early 1/72 Monogram F-15A in air superiority blue was my first cheap with a can kit airbrush attempt (early 80’s). Covered half a wing with what I had in the siphon jar, that’s all?! Brush painting was quicker at that time. Recently acquired the 1/72 Revell F-16A with the ground support/engine parts kit for a nostalgia build in the red, white, and blue markings.

I was stationed at Tyndall AFB, Fl. from 1976-1980. We occasionally saw the then brand new F-15 and F-16 fly in and out as transients. 😎👍

I always liked that sky blue scheme on the early Eagles.

The F-16 demo team's scheme that replicates the original prototype is awesome!

The f16 brought back a memory. That plane was on the cover of a book I read when I was a pup, called "Building Plastic Models". Has it really been fifty+ years?!?!?!! Surreal.

I still think of the UH-60 as the Army's "new" helicopter.

The lack of new diverse airframes tells me we’ve reached the design limits for human flight outside propulsion. It also tells me we are entering a new era of automated flight. Private aviation has become ridiculously expensive from training to operations. Drones and AI piloted a/c are already here. George Jetson would not be surprised.

Lack of diverse military airframes has more to do with politics and what Congress appropriates for funding than human physiology. What happens in skunkworks projects is outside of normal Congressional oversight, so it can be fun to speculate.

Another way to look at is how little there has been in regards to development of new aircraft in the last 50 years.

I witnessed the first fight, and the first belly landing of the F-16 while pulling B-52D alert at Carswell AFB. Aircraft were built better 50 years ago than the glass cockpit, plastic aircraft of today. Smart engineers, and no dumb computers.

The F111 Nighthawk first flew in the late 80's. Knowing the developnent lag aircraft have, that plane should be close to being 50 years old. Canada bought their CF-18s in the 70's.

It's interesting to compare what changes there have been to aircraft design in 50-year increments.Look at 1910-1960. Big changes there. Or 1935-1985. Again huge changes. Where's my flying car?
