What they NEED to work on is consistency, not screens or plastics. I've had the Oracle and then the Oracle Touch for about 3 years each, they've never been consistence, with the same beans in the hopper, nothing changed on any setting/button/knob it would give different volumes in every brew, in both machines. When you finally dial it in, it will give 2 or 3 shots with around 5 ml difference, but then it will start to go all over the place. I have the tamp fan bolt set to where it grinds 20 grams consistently, but afterwards, its either the tamp pressure that varies or something else, because the shots are either too less in volume or too much in volume for the 30 seconds duration.

Yes I agree, I have noticed exactly the same thing. Makes me want to get a separate grinder (this is my suspicion to start with). It will allow me to assess if it improves consistency of shots. The weight ground is quite consistent though, each time I measure it I am writhing 0.2 gr. The flow of the shot still varies a lot.

@@Falcon5ive yes. It’s definitely cheaper and , aside from the fancy selections on screen, will have a bunch of similar settings. The internals are the same than on my oracle though, so there is still very common failure points that I personally have come to find annoying. When I upgrade I’ll get a more industrial machine. It would be interesting to have a longevity rating of the Sage lineup, I dont know if anyone has ever done that.

In the UK, on a domestic socket, you want to keep below 2800w max in reality. That's within the capacity of a 13a plug with a bit of wiggle room. Going past that, you're into needing something more juicy similar to a domestic oven connection.
@Coffee_Kev

Yeah, to be honest my first thought was why don't they just give it three thermojets, but I'd not considered the energy use, they're very efficient in terms of speed, but they do use quite a bit of power while they're heating. I'm guessing this is why they didn't do that, I don't think many people would expect to have to get a sparky to come mess with their electric circuit just to plug in a new coffee machine. I mean, clearly I would do that, but not everyone is as daft as me ;-). Ta, Kev.
@fuzziestlumpkin
@fuzziestlumpkin 3 ай бұрын
Yep, and if you take into account the US and their Aus homeland where you can usually only access 2200 Watts max at a socket, it becomes very obvious why they didn't put a second thermojet, and likely never will. Personally though, if I ever have to make coffee for 4 or more people, I'm afraid they are getting batch brew haha.

How would you compare the milk texture while auto steaming to what the Ninja Luxe Cafe produces? I was surprised seeing Tom's Coffee corner and one other KZbinr mention that the quality of foam was bad (as against what Lance experienced). It sure sounds like the barista guidance is better on the Luxe as it stands which would make it easier for others in the house to use. I'm (US based) between this and waiting for the Es701 Ninja Luxe (the one with the tamper built in) to be released to move on from my Breville Infuser simply because of a lack of a time most mornings.
@Coffee_Kev
@Coffee_Kev 3 ай бұрын
I watched Tom's vid too and I had a chat with Tom about it. I also mention this at 14:27. The auto frothing for low fat dairy and milk alternatives, from my testing, seems to not work - I don't mean it's not great, I mean it literally doesn't work, it seems faulty - on the unit I've got, at least. I'm going to see if they can diagnose it via Wifi, will be an interesting experiment. Lance Hedrick.... legend has it that any manner of milk, real or alternative, just gives up in Lance's presence & forms itself into amazing texture and then into latte art, no point trying to do otherwise as Lance could pour incredible latte art with cement. The latte art I poured at 14:37 was done on auto frothing with full fat cow's milk, so the one I've got, at least, seems to do an amazing job with full fat dairy, on auto, and it's brilliant manually also, but on auto it doesn't seem to work at the moment with low fat diary & milk alternatives. Re the Barista guidance, actually mine was way worse than it is now originally, it mainly only gave guidance at all within the first test shots, after that it seemed to only work very occasionally, but since the last update (the one that also gave us espresso Martini & the two Shakerato menu items). In my initial filming, I completely slated the barista guidance, said it didn't work and they need to fix it, but thankfully they fixed that in the meantime so we edited that out. Now that's been addressed, it's OK, it just doesn't seem to be as smart as I think it should be with the brains it has. Ta Kev

And if so can you use a 3rd 58mm party portafilter? 2. Can you use a puck screen with the portafilter provided with the machine? 3. Can you use 3rd party baskets (eg 18g) with the porter filter provided 4. More of a general question. Do you recommend using a filter papers in your puck prep? Thanks for the help!

Great Video, Kev. Made me laugh seeing your wish list :) A couple of things I noticed about the Jet I don't think you mentioned was the lack of any thermal mass in the group, which means the group basket stays cold. The other gripe I have on mine currently, is it doesn't recognise when i change the grinding size back after a cold shot. This could easily be fixed tho with an update. Finally, the Barista assist disappears as soon as you modify any stock recipes. Thanks again
@Coffee_Kev
@Coffee_Kev 2 ай бұрын
Cheers 👍😎. Re thermal mass, this is a different kind of machine, they're not like E61 machines for example with chunky brass groups that get heated up over time and then hold that heat, even if they did have chunkier brass groups, the heaters are only on for small periods of time, and they don't kick out any residual heat. Instead these machines are made to heat up very quickly, with the one thermojet flash heating the brew water, and the other one flash heating the group. Re the issues with Barista assist, have you had the latest firmware update? I had issues with this until the last update with Espresso Martini & the Shakerato recipes. Cheers Kev

Heat is a lot better than the touch impress in my opinion in general, but you still want to make sure the machine is properly preheated. I put a blanking disc with the little handle cut off in between the portafilter and basket to do a kind of hybrid backflush/blank shot. I'm planning to experiment with drilling holes into one when I can get hold of extra ones, seem to be out of stock currently.

Very good review as always! A comparison also with barista touch impress would be useful. Does the oracle jet justify the extra cost over the touch impress?
@Coffee_Kev
@Coffee_Kev 3 ай бұрын
Thanks 😎will do that. In a nutshell, I'd say if someone has the budget for the Jet, and is interested in the stuff it does that the touch impress doesn't (better temp stability with the heated group meaning better shot to shot consistency in theory at least, bigger range of temp adjustments, completely auto dosing and tamping, 21/22g dose, temp on screen while manually steaming, stepless grind adjustment, Wifi updates) then I'd say yeah it's worth it. I think there will be some people who won't care about any of that, and the touch impress will be more than enough, in which case it would be hard to justify the extra spend I'd say. Ta, Kev.

I like that there are no boilers but an integrated grinder is not my preference. With better temperature control than dual boilers, at least there on the right track. Is there enough manual control that a user can make his own recipe and save it? I'm thinking of a blooming espresso type recipe that Decent Espresso offers. Does it have that kind of control?
@Coffee_Kev
@Coffee_Kev 3 ай бұрын
Nah, this isn't designed for that kind of use. But, yeah, I can defo see the potential for something like this but without the integrated grinder. They could give the same control over the pump that the Sage/Breville Dual Boiler provides, but also with manual profiling and manual profiling, basically a Hybrid between the Lelit Bianca and the DB. Something like this is definitely something I'd love to see. I think the tech in the Oracle Jet shows they'd be able to do this, I'd think they'd just need to give it a needle valve like the one used in the dual boiler, basically produce it with the Slayer mod, but with access to pre-set and re-programmable profiles via the screen and also give it some form of manual paddle for people who want to do manual profiling. If they could produce something like this I think it would be epic!! Cheers, Kev.

@@Coffee_Kev I'm in my fifth year of owning a Decent Espresso machine. I have done a lot of experimenting, went the light roast path and other exotic beans for awhile but settled on the Palo Altan blend from my roaster for the past three years. Oddly enough, with the best machine on the market, my coffee needs are just super simple these days. I could probably get by with a simpler machine other than the fact I've been using a rather complicated recipe for quite some time.

Kev, in your discussion around dose size, and the limitation of the baskets included with the machine, you don't suggest picking up alternative baskets to solve this issue. Is this not something worth exploring? Cheers
@Coffee_Kev
@Coffee_Kev 3 ай бұрын
Yeah you can certainly experiment with different baskets, and I have done that with the Jet, but it's not quite as simple as it seems. Alternative baskets have different shapes and depths depending on the brand, so they're not necessarily going to give the dose weights as the Sage baskets at the same volume (where the fan actually tamps). So you may actually find for example, that one brand of basket that you'd think would deliver an 18g dose, actually gives you a higher dose weight via the Oracle Jet than the stock 21/22g basket, as I found with one basket while experimenting. Different baskets will require different grind sizes too although that's not an issue if you're planning on elusively using the alternative basket. Ta Kev

Keep in mind that the inside of the single basket is “frosted / matt” in finish and Sage say that it’s like that so the machine can tell the difference between single / double basket. Might wanna keep this in mind when ordering a third party basket.

Technically they could do three thermojets as the don't all have to be 1600 Watt. They could dip the brew one to 1400, use a 1000 for the steam and a small 400 to 600 for the group. The group thermojet would be lower than the brew water one as it is :) For who it is aimed at it is perfect as it is though. Having the ability to queue the functions means you just set it all up then go do what you do while it does what it does, and then come back and mis the espresso and the milk 😁

The first thing I'd say there is that your machine from Argos turned out to be amazing value for money, £60 and lasted 5 years, can't knock that! But if you're wanting "true" espresso based drinks, then yeah really you need a portafilter machine. If you want the simplicity & ease of use as you've mentioned, you'll need a fully assisted machine like this - but it's worth pointing out that thanks to Ninja, you don't have to invest this amount of money to get this kind of performance. The Ninja Luxe isn't quite the Oracle Jet, but it is one heck of a fully assisted portafilter machine for the price, kzbin.info/www/bejne/nJ-mXniritqJgbM

Maybe you can fill through that flap but added time and stages. Keep it smooth Sage.

I wonder how many people got the Roy Walker Catch phrase thing? Classic. Also. I don't think a 3rd thermal jet would allow simultaneous brew and steam. 2 Thermal jets is all you need but you would need a 2nd pump, not a 3rd thermal jet.

Haha, not sure, but we make ourselves laugh, that's the most important thing 😆. Yeah you'd need another pump too. Re whether or not 3 thermojets would be needed to make it work like a dual boiler - one is currently for brew and steam, the other is to flash heat the group. You thinking they could have used one heater both for pre-heating and for brew, and the other one for steam? Ta Kev

@@Coffee_Kev Hi Kev. I forgot you mentioned it has a thermal jet to heat the group so you're right to say it would require a 3rd, along with a 2nd pump to brew and steam simultaneously, that sounds like a lot of power consumption and complexity. Sage seem to have taken a sensible approach. I've had the original Oracle for around 5 years but I'm becoming dis-satisfied with the grinder and will start using it as a simple dual boiler machine with a good PID.

Please can you do a review of the Dualit Espressivo Pro from John Lewis. It looks like a great machine and has two thermoblocks so you can brew and steam at the same time. Thanks

What about the taste of espresso and milk-based drinks from this machine compared to a real espresso machine with a separate grinder? Is it a night-and-day difference, or is it pretty close to the quality of its bigger counterparts?

Something else that needs addressing is the coffee puck contacts the group head when portafilter is installed. Anyone else have this issue? Obviously no way to be able to use a puck screen if you wanted to.

I'm looking for a new machine, but on the fence on spending that much, might go for the ninja. BTW chocolate fondant beans are awesome even if there in my old primadona bean to cup coffee machine .

they have rolled out this new packaging about a year ago. Almost all the machines I’ve been selling for the past year have been using this cardboard box with no Styrofoam. Express, pro, Touch, BDB etc

Great review as always, shame its beyond my budget. I have roughly £1000 (max £1200) to spend, very interested to hear what machine Kev and his coffee botherers would recommend for that price.

If you want something approaching the Jet for that money, it's gotta be the Touch Impress or Ninja Luxe
