Congrats on 7 years!!! The Avengers Initiative Reading Challenge was so much fun! I think a sit down video about Romantasy would be fantastic - I want to be a Romantasy girlie, but I think I need more of a fantasy plot than just straight spice. So a video that takes us through fantasy-heavy-and-spice-light to spice-heavy-and-fantasy-light would be so great!
@FourPawsandaBook4 күн бұрын
that's a great idea! I'll have to work on it, because there are definitely romantasy books that are more fantasy forward!

Wait. How did I forget about the Avengers initiative reading challenge!!!! What a time to be alive. All I could think about while you were talking about SJM being the Godmother of Romantasy was me really wanting to say "She made 'Fetch' happen". and like... maybe I shouldn't be out here showing my age on the internet. You know what though, as someone who hasn't jumped into Romantasy yet (outside of SJM) a video like "Where to start with Romantasy if SJM doesn't work for you" would be a cool idea! "This doesn't need to be this big." - basically how I feel about the male anatomy in all the smutty books hahahahaha yesssss to the Skip The Line Gods coming through for you. I love that the title of this vides is "reading favorites" and you read a bunch of books that you didn't like. Ooops. So glad you were able to end it off with a book you loved though!

"favorites" being the relative term here! haha yes Avengers felt like SO LONG ago! we were truly different people then...

Awww loved this video, it was so cool to go back over your time. Not sure if I was in the first 100 but I’ve been watching you since the bullet journal days and remember your first book tube videos. I’m not big into book tube but have stuck with you for your insights and personality - plus a few great book recommendations along the way. Congratulations on your progress and growth and I wish you even more happiness in 2025.

The best of the best category is so weird. Also, there were 3 SJM books in that category and then a fouth on in YA fantasy. So that means that in that year SJM had 4 chances to win an award. I was interested in The Five, but i'm now taking it off my TBR. Yikes! Yes to your SJM rant. I feel like that happens a lot though. Like, the other day my cousin was panicking that her daughter who is starting to get into middle grade age, didn't want to read Harry Potter. As if there are no other and no better middle grade books out there

it's so interesting how the wider book world gets fixated on one series or fandom like there isn't so much more out there! I guarantee it's better!

So, the point that she was trying to prove in The Five was that the women died, not through any perceived fault of their own, but because they lived in a society that did not care about them bc they were poor and they were vulnerable and didnt fit the Victorian ideal of womanhood (tho, we know that wasnt much protection either). That said, and this is something she corrected in the podcast iirc, I do think the book comes across as a bit condescending to s*x work. That was the one gripe I remember having with the book.
@FourPawsandaBook5 күн бұрын
It really did and it read very puritanical. It's as if her biases came through and it irked me that she made leaps from her sources to her thesis and it felt like the reader was being led to that assumption, rather than given the information because she didn't trust the source material to prove it on its own. Hopefully there's some clarification in the podcast.
@TheWordN3rd5 күн бұрын
@FourPawsandaBook All history is interpreted through the lens of the historian writing about it. They're supposed to be using the primary and secondary source material along w historical context to prove their point. This is very much in the vein of a lot of other historical non-fiction out there.
@avsambart4 күн бұрын
Catching Fire was 2018?! It feels like it came out WAY earlier. The Five is SO GOOD, it was my only 5 star book last year (2024). "You don't get to assume things" you mean like the people and the police during the Ripper time who all assumed they were poor drunkard s/x workers and therefore were deemed not good enough to bother to find the culprit properly? And that this assumption has remained officially across all history books the entire time. It's because the only thing about these women in history books IS their assumed job, that people (until more recently) focused way more and are more interested in the Ripper and who he is, than the victims themselves. Especially because of the misogony and classism (in the 19th Century and the Police Force at the time etc.) and the negative connotation of s/x work. She wanted to give these women an actual story and a probable story so people would stop assuming just based on a possible occupation, stop underplaying their murd/rs, and actually finally have sympathy for them! 23:03 Prohibition movement? We never had prohibition in the UK. They tried but there were never any official nation wide laws.

See I thought it was way earlier too? Maybe that category had different rules? Glad that the book worked for you! That’s the cool thing about reading!

I hate when King books get classified as horror just because of who the author is. He does psychological thrillers really well and other genres too including literary fiction that sometimes happen to include horror and magical realism and just general paranormal elements. I know he's known for horror but it bugs me because he does so much more than just that!!
@FourPawsandaBook3 күн бұрын
right?! For as prolific of a writer as he is, he gets pigeon holed a lot

Let the dudebros be mad that marketing towards women was effective when a fantasy book marketed towards women wins Goodreads. They can change that if they want.
