Rex is the name he gives his dog, sometimes. In the survival island 100 says challenge he named his dog sparky. By saying that he had a dog named Rex he is plausibly saying this is an official continuation of that 100 days challenge. That's just speculation, though. The backstop of Rex is he often gives his dog the name Rex because he likes the name Rex. But, it would likely explain the opening cutscene where he was on a large sailboat. So, by finding a dog named Rex the audience accepts that this is his dog and he can add a cool wolf monster that glows.
