I agree. I think it was premeditated, seeing as she "knocked her out" first. She didn't have to strangle her then. This native woman got a good lawyer and the victim's family got nothing. Everyones too afraid to put the native girl in jail because she "had a bad life". she probably had a better life than lots of other people. Past lives shouldn't count. you have to be responsible for your own crimes, not blame others.

A Gladue report was used in the sentencing, which bases sentencing on an Indigenous background. The report, to be simplistic, states: "This person's parents were in residential school, had substance abuse, and trauma, so the crime isn't completely their fault" This is a very basic example, but the report, in a way, justifies a crime based on cultural, familial and systemic background factors. Is it a good or bad thing? Depends on who you ask.
@RandyFortier6 ай бұрын
@@marytataryn5144 Why do you keep mentioning her native status? What does that have to do with anything in this case? The video literally explains the sentence. The prosecution and the defence came to a mutual agreement. Does it represent justice? Probably not, but to imply that there is some racially-motivated leniency is ridiculous. It is documented that first nations men and women receive harsher penalties, and are found guilty more often. First nations are disproportionately represented in the prison system. Don't use your bias to guide you, use facts.

@@Vaterraman The quote you mention here doesn't say anything about her background. You are reading into this, and allowing your racial bias to guide your interpretation. @SmegInThePants10 ай бұрын
I was thinking the same thing as I watched the video. If thins really were like described in the video, then: They found the belt when they found the body. And then they determined that it was the murder weapon, we don't have a timeline on that but presumably that realization came with the autopsy report, so lets say a few months after that at most. Then they just put it into storage, not checking it for dna until after it was noticed to be in that photo. Seems kinda crazy. I mean if you check any one thing for dna, wouldn't it the murder weapon? It shouldn't have taken that photo to get them to check it. They shoulda checked it for dna immediately since it was found next to a body in an unsolved murder. And failing that, they have even less excuse for not checking it for dna after they realized it was the murder weapon. I could see them checking it for dna and there being no match if they don't have the suspect's dna on record, but then they'd have the unknown killer's dna and would merely be waiting for a match, that'd still be a better position to be in, than just having it in a box somewhere.

Late to the party, but people often forget that for a DNA match you need two samples, one from the site/weapon/etc, and one from the person to contrast/match it. Manslaughter??!!! OMFG She is a lying freaking murderer. She knew exactly what she did while she was doing it that's how she was able to tell her aunt. A life gone and 7 years of sentencing? That's a travesty of Justice. ⚖️
@TheSarah897 ай бұрын
How the hell did they not 1. Test the murder weapon for DNA right away and 2. Not notice she was wearing it in a photo from the night she died?

It was not a kindness to Cheyenne (and ultimately Brittany) to essentially not punish her for the previous 50! offenses. It just showed her that there were no consequences and each arrest was a missed opportunity to either separate her from society until she matured or convince her to change her path. It also seems like a huge waste of policing effort to keep rearresting the same person over and over.

I wholeheartedly despise weak prosecution and weak judges. Prosecution should have thrown more charges at her to get her in jail longer. Lying to the police in of itself is a crime
@blarfroer806610 ай бұрын
Lying to the police to cover yourself isn't punishable by law.
@thecrispymaster10 ай бұрын
But without proof of intent, you simply can't do someone on murder. Throw those charges and she gets off entirely. Would you rather that. Or would you rather a court system that bases rulings on things that can't be proven properly so long as you get your sense of justice? Because I certainly don't.

They had the murder weapon, the suspect, and a photo of the suspect WEARING the murder weapon, but it took them 2 years to put the pieces together and test the belt for her DNA? Good grief, this police department isn’t exactly on top of their game.

It was because of her parents background and her own history that they didn't try harder. Must have been a cop new to town that noticed the belt, and did his job.

I didn't know about Cheyenne's past. That is all so tragic. While it doesn't excuses what she did (as (speaking as a Canadian myself) there are literally thousands of kids like her who have inherited the trauma of residential schools and mistreatment of First Nations children in foster care), its sadly a horrific and very real part of our reality in this country, and most of them never kill anyone...to act like she didn't have a choice is to ignore the strength of the many, many First Nations people who never do what she did) it's also impossible to not ask if Cheyenne couldn't have lived a much better life and Brittney might not still be alive if Canada had not had the residential schools, or...at the very least, more recently (though residential schools were open till the 1990s...so *very* much so "more recently") had actually done something to help the survivors heal instead of continuing the cycle of trauma.
